He handed me the yellow papers. "You might need these when we go down for the Body Retrieval."
I took the yellow papers and carefully tucked them into my pocket.
Then Old Yu led me onto a small Rubber Boat.
"Where did the three children fall into the river yesterday?" Old Yu asked a middle-aged man.
The man pointed to a spot in the Yellow River.
"That's where the current is strongest," Old Yu remarked.
He then asked, "Where did those two college students jump in yesterday?"
"Right at that spot too," the middle-aged man replied.
"Ah," Old Yu sighed.
"How far is it from here to where the five children sank?" Old Yu inquired again.
"About four or five hundred meters away," the man answered.
"The bodies must have been swept downstream," Old Yu muttered to himself.
He then turned to me and said, "You should paddle downstream now, stopping about five or six hundred meters away. We'll start the Body Retrieval there."
I nodded and began to row the boat.
The distance of five or six hundred meters was quickly covered.
“Right around here!” Old Yu shouted.
I stopped rowing and sat quietly in the Rubber Boat.
I watched as Old Yu took off his jacket, revealing his lean physique.
He put on goggles and tied a rope around his waist.
“When I go down, you stay put in the Rubber Boat!” Old Yu instructed.
“Got it!” I nodded.
Then I asked, “Master, is there anything else I should be aware of?”
Old Yu thought for a moment and replied, “Be mindful of the taboos on the water’s surface!”
“Oh!” I nodded, somewhat understanding.
With that, Old Yu plunged into the water.
After two or three minutes, he surfaced to catch his breath before diving back down again.
About ten minutes later, he resurfaced once more.
“How is it, Master?” I asked anxiously.
"We've already found four bodies, and there's still one missing," Old Yu said, panting heavily.
He then waved his hand at me. "First, help me get them up."
With that, he submerged into the water, slowly swimming upwards while holding onto one end of the rope.
I quickly paddled the Rubber Boat to follow him.
Before long, a body surfaced.
It was a little girl, dressed in a pink down jacket, with a lollipop still in her mouth.
Seeing her body filled me with sorrow.
Such a young child had left this world...
I hurriedly grasped the girl's body and slowly pulled her to the surface.
Suddenly, Old Yu emerged from the water and shouted at me, "Be careful not to let the body turn over!"
I quickly flipped the girl's body over so that she lay face down on the Rubber Boat.
"And remember, you can't lift the body above your head!" Old Yu shouted again.
I quickly lowered the girl back down, letting her rest on the Rubber Boat.
In this manner, we managed to get all four bodies onto the Rubber Boat.
I then asked, "Master, what should we do with the other corpse?"
Old Yu thought for a moment and then handed me an Iron Hook from the toolbox.
"Later, you'll use this Iron Hook to slowly slide upstream until you hook the corpse," he instructed.
I took the Iron Hook and nodded.
I began to slide the Iron Hook slowly, but after a long time, I hadn't hooked anything.
Just when I was about to give up, the Iron Hook suddenly snagged something!
I felt a rush of tension!
Finally, I had found the last corpse!
I was filled with excitement and quickly pulled the Iron Hook back.
But in my nervousness, I accidentally yanked the corpse up to the surface!
Oh no!
This was bad!
The corpse flipped over, facing the sky!
