Time flew by quickly, and before I knew it, it was the day of my and Gu Chen's scheduled Engagement Banquet. Of course, I would never actually get engaged to him in this lifetime. However, I had already sent out the invitations and booked the venue; it would be a waste not to stir up some trouble.
I secretly let a rumor slip that I, Lin Yao, was heartbroken and planned to announce the dissolution of my engagement with Gu Chen at the banquet, while also offering to "sell off" some shares of the Lin Group at a low price to those who truly cared about the Lin family. Gu Chen, true to form, believed it. He probably thought I was just throwing a tantrum or trying to use the shares as leverage to avoid facing the consequences of my previous "mistakes." Instead of canceling the Engagement Banquet, he secretly contacted several speculators eager to buy Lin shares at a bargain, preparing to pressure me during the event.
Bai Weiwei was also busy; perhaps Gu Chen had promised her the position of "future Mrs. Gu," as she had been unusually active lately, spreading rumors that I was "mentally unstable" and "willful," portraying herself as a self-sacrificing saint deeply in love with Gu Chen.
Oh, her acting skills were impressive.
On the night of the Engagement Banquet at Starlight Hotel's banquet hall, I wore an expensive black strapless gown and adorned my neck with the sapphire necklace named "Deep Sea Heart," which my mother had left me. My makeup was exquisite, with fiery red lips that made me look like I was attending a funeral.
Gu Chen stood next to Bai Weiwei, a perfect match of a scoundrel and a schemer, accepting various guests' "blessings." When he saw my outfit, a glimmer of pride flashed in his eyes; he probably thought I had resigned myself to fate. Bai Weiwei pretended to approach me to link arms but was frozen in place by just one look from me.
Halfway through the banquet, the host began to get emotional, talking about "weathering storms together" and "love stronger than gold," before inviting Gu Chen and me onto the stage.
The show was about to begin.
I walked slowly onto the stage and took the microphone. "Thank you all for coming to celebrate my and Mr. Gu's... 'grave engagement,' oh no, I mean Engagement Banquet." I deliberately mispronounced it, watching Gu Chen's face turn green with anger, which brought me great satisfaction. Laughter erupted from the audience.
"I know everyone is concerned about our future together and the fate of the Lin Group," I continued smoothly. "Today, I will give you all an explanation."
I gestured slightly, and the large screen in the banquet hall lit up.
Instead of showing sweet memories, it displayed... a high-definition surveillance video.
The location: an abandoned factory on the outskirts of town. The time: one day before my father's car accident.
In the footage, Gu Chen was seen meeting secretly with my uncle Lin Jianshan and handing over a thick envelope to a shifty-looking man.
Though there was no sound, that scene and those actions spoke volumes!
Next, the screen switched to another video—this one captured by a hidden camera near my father's accident site. It showed that the large truck involved in the crash made an obvious and irrational turn just before impact! Following that were images of Gu Chen sending someone to secretly dispose of that truck after the accident!
While not direct evidence, when combined with the previous footage, even a fool could understand what had happened!
The crowd erupted in chaos! This was no longer a matter of infidelity or moral issues! This was... hiring a hitman?!
“Lin Yao! You... you’re slandering me!” Gu Chen was completely panicked, pointing at the screen, his voice trembling.
Lin Jianshan looked so frightened he nearly collapsed to the ground.
Bai Weiwei let out a scream, probably trying to pretend to faint, but her acting was so poor that no one paid her any attention.
“Am I slandering you?” I scoffed, pulling out my phone and connecting it to the speakers.
A clear recording played, capturing the conversation between Gu Chen and Lin Jianshan:
“...The Lin is dead, and the Lin will be ours... That Lin Yao, just need to placate her...”
“...Don’t worry, I’ve arranged everything with the driver; it will be completely clean...”
The recording was short but packed with explosive information!
“Gu Chen, Lin Jianshan,” I lowered my phone, my gaze slicing through their pale faces like ice blades. “Do you still think I’m slandering you?”
In the audience, someone had already quietly called the police.
Flashes from cameras illuminated Gu Chen, Lin Jianshan, and Bai Weiwei, revealing their twisted, terrified, and desperate expressions clearly.
“This ‘Funeral Banquet’ will serve as an early send-off for you.” I spoke into the microphone, my voice icy.
Then, amidst the approaching sound of sirens in the background, I elegantly walked off the stage, leaving this hellish scene under the complex gazes of the crowd.
