Love is not always smooth sailing, even in sweet romance dramas; a few small twists are needed to spice things up. Shen Yu and I encountered a little turbulence.
It all started with Shen Yu's childhood friend, Qin Yao. She is a student from the music department at a neighboring university, beautiful and graceful. It is said that she and Shen Yu grew up together, and their families have a close relationship.
Recently, Qin Yao has been visiting A University frequently to see Shen Yu. Sometimes she brings homemade snacks, and other times she asks him for help with computer issues (though I seriously doubt a music student would have any complex computer problems). The way she looks at me always carries a hint of scrutiny and… superiority?
I couldn't help but feel a bit uneasy, but I trust Shen Yu. He always informs me when Qin Yao comes to see him and never hesitates to take her calls in front of me.
Until one day, while I was studying in the library, I saw Qin Yao walk directly over to Shen Yu and naturally sit down in the empty seat next to him. She placed a cup of milk tea on his desk and said affectionately, “A Yu, I brought you your favorite flavor.”
Shen Yu frowned slightly and looked up to see me not far away; his gaze paused for a moment. He didn’t take the cup of milk tea and responded somewhat distantly, “Thanks, but I’m not thirsty.”
Qin Yao seemed taken aback by his rejection; her smile faltered for an instant but quickly returned to normal as her eyes shifted towards me with a hint of provocation.
At that moment, I couldn’t quite describe what I felt—there was a mix of sourness, bitterness, and a touch of grievance. I lowered my head, pretending to focus on my book, but I couldn’t absorb a single word.
Before long, Shen Yu got up and walked over to me. He didn’t sit down but leaned over to whisper in my ear, “I’ll step out for a moment; I’ll be right back.”
I nodded without looking up.
He hesitated briefly before turning and leaving the library. I saw him walk out with Qin Yao, which only added to my frustration.
For the next half hour, I felt like I was sitting on pins and needles. My mind raced with various possibilities: Were they going out to talk? Would Shen Yu think I was being petty? Would Qin Yao say something bad about me?
Just as I was about to give in to the urge to leave early, Shen Yu returned. He held a cup of hot cocoa in his hand and placed it on my desk.
“This is for you,” he said.
I stared blankly at the cup of hot cocoa; it was my favorite brand and flavor.
“Earlier…” he paused as if organizing his thoughts. “I clarified things with Qin Yao.”
“What did you say?” I looked up into his eyes.
“I told her that I have a girlfriend now and hope she keeps her distance in the future.” Shen Yu’s tone was calm, but his gaze was serious. “Lin Qi, I don’t like others misunderstanding our relationship, and I don’t want you to be unhappy because of this.”
Looking into his sincere eyes, all my chaotic thoughts and grievances vanished instantly. He had gone out to resolve the issue for my peace of mind.
“I’m sorry; I shouldn’t…” I shouldn’t have let my imagination run wild or doubted him.
He interrupted me by reaching out to gently ruffle my hair with a tender motion. “Silly girl, you did nothing wrong. It’s my fault for not handling things well and making you worry.”
He pulled over a chair beside me and took my hand in his. “In the future, if anything similar happens, just tell me how you feel, okay? Don’t keep it bottled up inside.”
I nodded vigorously, feeling warmth welling up in my eyes.
This small incident did not affect our relationship; instead, it brought us closer and deepened our trust in each other. I realized that a sense of security does not come from one partner deliberately avoiding all members of the opposite sex, but rather from their honest attitude and resolute choices.
Shen Yu also demonstrated through his actions that in his heart, I will always be his number one, the one he needs to protect carefully, and the existence that no one else can covet. My dependence on him grew even deeper within this sense of security that came from being chosen so firmly.
