The final exams had come to an end, and the winter break was just around the corner. The campus was gradually emptying out, but Shen Yu and I remained at school because he needed to wrap up the project he was working on.
As the year drew to a close, the sound of the New Year’s bells was about to ring in. This was our first New Year's Eve together.
Shen Yu mentioned that the project team had a dinner, and he might be back late. Although I felt a little disappointed, I understood. Su Xiaoxiao had already gone home, leaving the dormitory feeling empty. I snuggled under my blanket, watching movies and occasionally glancing at my phone, hoping for his message.
As midnight approached, my phone buzzed—it was Shen Yu.
“Hello?”
“Lin Qi, come downstairs,” his voice carried a hint of laughter.
“Ah? You’re back?” I sat up in surprise. “Didn’t you say you had a dinner?”
“It’s over. Hurry down; I have a surprise for you.”
A surprise? My heart skipped a beat as I quickly threw off the blanket, slipped on my coat, and rushed downstairs.
The area outside the dormitory was deserted, illuminated only by the dim glow of streetlights. I wrapped my coat tighter around me, stamping my feet against the cold while scanning the surroundings.
Suddenly, twinkling lights appeared in the distance on an open space. They were small decorative lights! They had been carefully arranged into a giant heart shape, shimmering warmly in the night.
Shen Yu stood in the center of that “starlight,” holding a bouquet of vibrant red roses. He wore a black wool coat that accentuated his tall figure. The light from the streetlamps and fairy lights softened his sharp features, revealing a gentle smile in his eyes.
I stood frozen in place, completely stunned by the sight before me.
He waved me over, beckoning me to come closer.
With each step towards him, my heart raced faster as if it were about to leap out of my chest.
When I reached him, he handed me the bouquet of roses. “Happy New Year, Lin Qi.”
“Happy New Year…” I took the flowers; their fragrance was particularly rich in the cold air. “Did you… do all this?”
“Yeah.” He nodded, his eyes sparkling with anticipation as if waiting for praise. “Do you like it?”
I nodded vigorously, feeling tears welling up in my eyes. “I love it! It’s so beautiful!” I hadn’t expected him to prepare such a surprise for me, especially since he had been so busy these past few days.
“I’m glad you like it.” He smiled and pulled me into his embrace.
His hug was warm and carried a hint of weariness from his busy days, yet it made me feel incredibly safe. I buried my face in his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
“Didn’t you say you were going to dinner?” I asked softly.
“We did have dinner, but I slipped away early,” he replied, lowering his head to nuzzle against my hair. “I wanted to celebrate New Year’s with you.”
At that moment, the distant sound of the New Year’s countdown echoed through the air.
“Ten, nine, eight…”
Around us, scattered voices joined in, and we counted down together.
“Three, two, one!”
“Happy New Year!”
As the clock struck midnight, it felt as if invisible fireworks burst forth in the night sky.
Shen Yu released me, cradling my face in his hands, his gaze intense as he looked into my eyes. “Lin Qi.”
“Hmm?”
“Do you remember the request you owe me?” he asked, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
I nodded, my heart racing once again.
“My request is…” He leaned in slightly, his warm breath brushing against my cheek, “Now, kiss me.”
My face instantly flushed crimson, and my mind went blank.
Before I could react, he had already lowered his head and kissed me.
Unlike the fleeting touches of the past, this was a gentle and lingering kiss. His lips were soft and warm, carrying a hint of freshness as they carefully traced the shape of my lips before deepening gradually.
The surrounding noise seemed to fade away; the world was reduced to just the two of us and the sound of our racing hearts. The twinkling lights around us sparkled like countless stars witnessing this sweet moment.
This New Year’s Eve, Shen Yu gave me an unforgettable surprise. His thoughtfulness, his romance, and that kiss under the New Year’s bells amidst the dazzling starlight were all deeply etched in my heart.
With him by my side in the new year, it seemed destined to be filled with sunshine and sweetness.
