The school was gearing up for a cultural performance, and each class and club was busy preparing their acts. Lu Yu, as the face of our school's guitar club, was unsurprisingly chosen to perform a guitar and singing piece.
For the past few days after school, he had been staying in the music room to rehearse. As his designated assistant, I naturally took on the responsibility of bringing him water and snacks.
On Wednesday afternoon, I pushed open the door to the music room while carrying two bottles of ice water. Inside, there was not just Lu Yu but also a girl from the neighboring class, Meng Jia. She was quite pretty and a member of the guitar club as well; this time, she was Lu Yu's partner, responsible for providing harmony.
As I walked in, they had just finished practicing a short segment. Meng Jia was turned slightly towards Lu Yu, her eyes sparkling as she smiled and said something to him. Lu Yu also curved his lips into a smile, nodding his head as he picked up a bottle of water from the side and took a sip.
The scene... how should I put it? It was rather harmonious.
I placed the ice water on the table nearby, trying not to make too much noise. "Lu Yu, your water."
Only then did he notice me and lifted his chin slightly in acknowledgment. "You’re here?"
"Yeah," I replied softly without saying much more.
Meng Jia also saw me and smiled, greeting me. She picked up her own cup. "I’ll go get some water; you two chat."
Once Meng Jia left, Lu Yu set down his guitar and walked over to me, opening the water bottle I had brought. "What are you standing there for? Is that all?"
"Um, I just came to bring you water," I said, looking down at the floor while unconsciously fiddling with my backpack strap.
"Help me organize the sheet music before you go," he said, pointing at several scattered sheets on the music stand and table.
"Oh." I walked over and began slowly stacking the sheets in order by page number.
Lu Yu leaned against the table, drinking his water while keeping his eyes on me. It made me feel a bit uneasy.
"Lin Wan," he suddenly called out.
"What?" I didn’t look up.
"You just..." He paused for a moment, his voice carrying a lazy hint of amusement. "Are you jealous?"
My movements abruptly halted, my heart skipping a beat. I quickly looked up and glared at him. "What are you talking about? Why would I be jealous!"
Perhaps my reaction was too intense; his smile deepened. He leaned in slightly, those usually carefree eyes now fixed on me with what seemed like tiny sparks of light. "Your face is all scrunched up like a bun; still not jealous?"
"I’m not!" I retorted defiantly, but my cheeks were uncontrollably heating up.
Lu Yu stared at my face for a few seconds before seeming to be in a good mood as he chuckled softly. He reached out, just like when we were kids, ruffling my hair and messing up my neatly tied ponytail.
"Alright, got it." He withdrew his hand with a cheerful tone. "Don’t worry; she’s not as cute as you."
With that, he picked up his guitar again and turned to continue practicing, leaving me standing there alone with the lingering warmth of his hand on my head.
My heart raced a little faster, a chaotic mess.
“She’s not as cute as you…”
That sentence was like a small stone thrown into the already turbulent waters of my heart, creating ripple after ripple that took a long time to settle.
I looked down at the neatly organized sheet music in my hands, and the notes seemed to transform into dancing question marks.
What’s up with Lu Yu today?
Is he… teasing me? Or is it…
I dared not think further, grabbing my backpack and almost fleeing the music classroom in a panic. Once I stepped into the hallway, the evening breeze brushed against my face, and I finally realized just how hot my cheeks were.
The “revolutionary friendship” that had lasted since childhood seemed to have quietly changed into something else at a moment I was unaware of.
