That unpleasant incident felt like a thorn, piercing the space between me and Lu Yu.
The next morning, I woke up early, intending to wait for him outside his house so I could explain what happened last night. However, I waited in the hallway until dawn, but he never came out. I texted him, but my messages vanished into silence. When I called, he hung up immediately.
All day at school, Lu Yu treated me like I was invisible. He no longer passed by my desk during breaks as he used to; on the way home, he deliberately avoided the path we usually took together; even in the cafeteria, when we crossed paths, he merely glanced at me coldly before sitting as far away as possible.
This complete disregard hurt more than any of his previous angry glares.
I tried to find an opportunity to talk to him. During lunch break, I saw him alone at the end of the hallway, reading a book. Gathering my courage, I walked over. "Lu Yu..."
He looked up, his eyes devoid of warmth. "What is it?"
"About last night’s gala..."
"No need to say anything." He interrupted me curtly. "You and Chen Yu seem to be doing well; congratulations."
"It's not what you think! I didn’t..."
"Does it matter to me?" He closed his book and stood up, looking down at me from above. "Lin Wan, do what you want to do; you don’t need to explain anything to me."
With that, he walked past me without a second glance, leaving me standing there with a lump in my throat and tears nearly spilling over.
I felt both angry and wronged. How could he so decisively condemn me? Throughout our childhood, when had he ever seen me get close to another boy? Couldn’t he trust me just this once?
In the following days, Lu Yu and I fell into a complete Cold War. We lived across from each other, attended the same school, and even shared some classes in the same large classroom, yet it felt like an insurmountable chasm lay between us.
To make matters worse, rumors about me, Chen Yu, and Lu Yu began circulating around the school. There were many versions of the story, but they all conveyed a similar idea: that I, Lin Wan, was a “slut,” enjoying Lu Yu’s care while being ambiguous with campus heartthrob Chen Yu—“playing both sides.” Some even claimed they witnessed Chen Yu confessing to me on the day of the anniversary gala and that I didn’t refuse him, which led Lu Yu to leave in sadness.
These words pierced my heart like needles. I tried to explain myself to my close friends, but once rumors spread, they were hard to control. Some people even looked at me with strange expressions.
That day after school, feeling utterly dejected, I walked out with my head down. As I reached the entrance of the teaching building, I was stopped by Chen Yu.
“Lin Wan,” he said with a hint of concern in his voice. “Have you been... facing some trouble lately? You don’t seem well.”
“It’s nothing.” I forced a smile and tried to walk past him.
“Is it because of those rumors?” He pressed on. “I’m sorry; it might be my fault for causing you distress.” He pulled out a pack of tissues from his pocket and handed them to me. “I noticed your eyes are a bit red; have you been crying?”
I had indeed cried in secret out of frustration; my eyes were still slightly puffy. Hesitating for a moment at the sight of the tissues he offered, I eventually took them. “Thank you.”
The moment I took the tissue, my peripheral vision caught that familiar figure once again. Lu Yu stood under the shade of a tree not far away, I wondered how long he had been there. In his hand, he held a bag that seemed to contain the workbook I had forgotten at his house yesterday.
He stared intently at me and Chen Yu, watching as I accepted the tissue Chen Yu handed me. His expression was darker than ever before, and the last remnants of warmth in his eyes had completely vanished.
He didn’t come over or say a word. He simply watched us in silence for a few seconds, then turned around and casually tossed the bag containing my workbook into the nearby trash can.
Without looking back, he strode away.
At that moment, my heart sank completely. He discarded not just my workbook, but seemingly everything between us—the years of friendship and trust we had built up over more than a decade.
