I could no longer endure it.
Every moment of being ignored by Lu Yu, surrounded by rumors, felt like torture. I felt wronged, angry, but more than anything, I was afraid. Afraid that my relationship with Lu Yu would truly end over this ridiculous misunderstanding.
On Saturday night, after much mental preparation, I finally gathered the courage to walk to his door.
Standing at Lu Yu's doorstep, my heart raced and my palms were sweaty. After taking several deep breaths, I raised my hand and knocked firmly on the door.
“Knock, knock, knock!”
After a long wait, the door finally opened.
Lu Yu appeared behind it. He looked a bit haggard, with faint shadows under his eyes. When he saw me, his gaze flickered with complexity but remained expressionless.
“Is there something?” His voice was a bit hoarse and distant.
Seeing him act so coldly pushed all the grievances and frustrations I had bottled up for days to the surface, and my eyes instantly turned red.
“Lu Yu!” My voice trembled with emotion as I shouted at him without holding back, “How long are you going to stay mad at me?”
He frowned slightly, as if he wanted to close the door again.
I quickly pressed against the door to stop him. “On the night of the school celebration, Chen Yu just helped me because someone pushed me! And that day after school, he only handed me a tissue because he saw my eyes were red! I never thought about accepting him! Those rumors are all false! Do you hear me? False!”
I spoke rapidly, almost shouting these words out.
“Have I ever lied to you since we were kids? Why won’t you believe me?” My tears finally fell uncontrollably. “Do you really not trust me at all?”
Lu Yu silently watched me, observing how I was crying uncontrollably. His throat moved slightly as the coldness in his gaze seemed to melt away bit by bit.
He just stood there, allowing my tears to fall like pearls from a broken string.
After what felt like an eternity—long enough for me to think he would turn around and leave again—he suddenly let out a soft sigh.
Then he reached out and pulled me into the room, shutting the door behind us with a swift motion.
In the next moment, I found myself tightly embraced in his arms.
His hold was strong and slightly trembling, as if he had used all his strength. My entire being was buried against his chest, and I could clearly hear his somewhat erratic heartbeat.
“I’m sorry…” His deep and hoarse voice resonated above my head. “Wan Wan, I’m sorry; it’s my fault…”
I froze for a moment, forgetting to cry.
He held me close, resting his chin on top of my head, his voice filled with deep regret and a hint of barely noticeable vulnerability: “I was petty… I was such a jerk…”
"I just..." He paused, his voice dropping lower, filled with a seriousness and tension I had never heard before. "I'm just... so scared."
"Scared?" I murmured in his embrace.
"Scared of losing you."
His arms tightened around me, almost making it hard to breathe. I felt his warm breath against my hair.
Then, in a voice that was almost a whisper, he said each word clearly: "I like you, Lin Wan."
"Not the kind of liking a brother has for his sister."
"It's the kind of liking a man has for a woman."
"It's been a long time."
With a thunderous crash, my mind went blank.
The world seemed to freeze at that moment. All I could hear was the powerful beating of his heart and my own heart pounding like thunder.
He held me close, saying nothing more.
I forgot to respond, simply leaning against him, feeling the warmth of his body and the immense impact of his words.
So it turns out...
All those awkward cares, that domineering possessiveness, those inexplicable jealousies...
They were all because of love.
The iceberg of misunderstanding seemed to melt away completely in that moment. And beneath the ice lay his long-hidden feelings.
I sniffled; my tears hadn't dried yet, but I couldn't help but let my lips curl into a smile.
This guy, Lu Yu... even his confession was so... sudden.
And it felt like he had stolen my lines.
