The smell of disinfectant was pungent, mingled with a sense of despair, just like the hospital room I was in before my death in my last life.
But when I opened my eyes, I didn’t see a stark white ceiling; instead, I found myself in a university classroom on a summer afternoon, sunlight filtering through the windows. A higher mathematics textbook lay open on the desk, and at the podium, the professor was passionately lecturing.
Everything felt so familiar it made my heart race.
I quickly lowered my head to look at my hands—young, unscarred, with nails that were round and tinged with a healthy pink.
Could it be… I really came back?
This wasn’t a near-death hallucination or a fleeting memory. I, Gu Yan, had been reborn. I had returned to my sophomore year, back to the beginning of all the tragedies in my life.
“Gu Yan! Gu Yan!”
My deskmate anxiously nudged my arm and whispered, “Lu Ze is waiting for you outside! And Lin Weiwei…”
Lu Ze. Lin Weiwei.
These two names pierced through the softest part of my heart like poisonous thorns, flooding me with a bitter sweetness of hatred.
Lu Ze, my ex-boyfriend—or rather, the man from my last life whom I loved for a whole decade, only to watch him choose his “true love,” Lin Weiwei, while I lay dying without even being offered help for medical expenses.
Lin Weiwei, my former “best friend,” the one who wore an innocent facade while stealing my boyfriend and causing my family’s ruin.
I took a deep breath to suppress the swirling emotions within me. My heart raced not from anxiety but from the excitement of the revenge that was about to come.
In my last life, it was on this very afternoon that Lu Ze called me out of class and staged a “heartfelt” decision in front of many curious classmates.
With his handsome brows furrowed and an expression of distress on his face, he said, “Yan Yan, Weiwei… she can’t live without me. But I do have feelings for you too. Just give me some time, okay?”
Meanwhile, Lin Weiwei stood beside him with tear-filled eyes, weakly tugging at his sleeve: “Aze, don’t make it hard for Gu Yan… I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to…”
At that time, I was naive and foolish; I was deceived by Lu Ze’s words about having feelings for me and chose to step back and wait. The result was an engagement invitation between him and Lin Weiwei and the subsequent news of my company being designed against by them until it went bankrupt.
In this new life, how could I possibly make the same mistake again?
The school bell rang abruptly, breaking my train of thought.
My deskmate looked at me with concern: “You look really pale; are you okay? Should I tell Lu Ze you’re not feeling well?”
“No need.” I stood up with a cold smile playing on my lips. “I’ll go myself.”
Stepping out of the classroom, I indeed saw Lu Ze and Lin Weiwei standing at the end of the corridor, just like in my last life, drawing many curious glances. Lu Ze wore a white shirt and still looked handsome as ever; however, all I could see now was his hypocrisy. Lin Weiwei nestled beside him like a delicate bird but her eyes sparkled with calculation.
As I approached them, Lu Ze came forward to greet me with his brows slightly furrowed in habitual concern: “Yan Yan, you’re here.”
Lin Weiwei timidly spoke up, “Sister Gu Yan…”
“Is there something you need?” I interrupted her, my voice calm as I fixed my gaze on Lu Ze, showing none of the obsession or humility from my last life.
Lu Ze seemed taken aback, perhaps not expecting my indifference. He cleared his throat and began to recite the well-rehearsed lines, “Yan Yan, I have feelings for Weiwei… You know she’s fragile and needs someone to take care of her. I admit, I’ve developed feelings for her, but I can’t let go of you…”
“Stop.” I interrupted him again, my tone laced with impatience. “Lu Ze, just say what you want to say.”
The crowd around us grew larger, whispering and pointing fingers.
Lu Ze’s expression faltered slightly, but he pressed on with a facade of deep emotion. “Yan Yan, I need time to sort out my feelings. Weiwei needs me, but I can’t let go of you…”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
The sound echoed clearly in the quiet hallway, dripping with unmasked sarcasm.
Both Lu Ze and Lin Weiwei stared at me in shock.
“Lu Ze,” I wiped the smile off my face, my gaze sharp as a knife. “Do you think you’re some chosen one, that all women should revolve around you? That you need to ‘choose’?”
His expression changed. “Yan Yan, what do you mean?”
“What I mean is,” I stepped forward, my voice low yet clear enough for everyone to hear, “do you even deserve it?”
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
I watched as Lu Ze’s face turned a shade of pale fury, feeling a rush of satisfaction in my chest.
“Lin Weiwei,” I turned to the tearful White Lotus beside me. “Since he finds it so ‘difficult to choose,’ and you can’t seem to live without him, then here’s a ‘treasure’ that I, Gu Yan, no longer want. It’s all yours. I wish you both—”
I paused for effect, relishing their panicked expressions as I enunciated each word clearly:
“Locked away, self-destructed, and may you never harm others again.”
With that, I turned away without casting them another glance and walked off with my head held high amidst the silence followed by an uproar of murmurs.
The sunlight bathed me in warmth as I stepped into it.
