The defeat in the academic competition was merely the beginning of Lu Ze's downhill journey. It seemed he blamed all his misfortunes on me, and his gaze towards me grew sharper, like a poisoned dagger. Beside him, Lin Weiwei not only failed to play the role of a supportive partner but acted more like an accelerator, pushing him deeper into the mire.
In an effort to prove that his charm had not diminished and to soothe Lin Weiwei's increasingly restless heart, Lu Ze began skipping classes more frequently, accompanying her on shopping trips, watching movies, and attending various meaningless parties. His focus had completely shifted away from academics and his future.
The decline in his grades was an inevitable result. When the midterm exam results were released, several of Lu Ze's major courses lit up with red flags, teetering on the edge of failure. This was something unimaginable in the past; after all, he had always prided himself on being a top student.
The news spread quickly, causing an uproar.
"What's wrong with Lu Ze? His grades are terrible..."
"Isn't it because of his relationship? I can see him falling for Lin Weiwei sooner or later."
"What a shame; he had such a bright future ahead."
These comments undoubtedly added new pressure on Lu Ze. He became increasingly sensitive and irritable, like a trapped beast unable to find an escape, lashing out randomly. The conflicts between him and Lin Weiwei also intensified.
Lu Ze needed a "princess" who admired him, depended on him, and could satisfy his vanity—not a "troublemaker" who only knew how to act spoiled, constantly demanding more while indirectly causing his academic decline. On the other hand, Lin Weiwei craved Lu Ze's attention, affection, and the accompanying sense of superiority. As Lu Ze struggled to maintain himself and could no longer meet her needs as before, her dissatisfaction and complaints grew.
I occasionally saw them arguing on campus. Lu Ze would furrow his brows in irritation while Lin Weiwei stood there with red-rimmed eyes, complaining pitifully. The scene was truly "a sight for sore eyes."
One time, as I was leaving the library with a book in my arms, I ran into them.
Upon seeing me, Lin Weiwei seemed to find an outlet for her frustration and rushed forward to block my path: "Gu Yan! Are you feeling smug? Seeing how Lu Ze is now must make you very happy!"
I raised an eyebrow at her flustered expression: "Lin Weiwei, please mind your words. How Lu Ze has turned out is his own choice; it has nothing to do with me. As for whether I'm happy... well, seeing trash being accurately thrown into the garbage bin does bring me some comfort."
"You!" Lin Weiwei trembled with anger.
Lu Ze pulled her behind him and glared at me with a dark expression: "Gu Yan, do you have to be so aggressive? We’ve already broken up; why can’t you just leave us alone?"
"Leave you alone?" I couldn't help but laugh. "Lu Ze, from start to finish, it’s been you two entangled in this mess. You were the ones spreading rumors; you were the ones flaunting your relationship in front of me; now you come here questioning me? Who exactly is not letting go of whom?"
My voice wasn’t loud but was clear enough that students passing by stopped to look curiously.
"You chose Lin Weiwei yourself; now that your grades are slipping and your future looks bleak, instead of reflecting on your own issues, you blame it on me?" I sneered. "Lu Ze, where's your sense of responsibility? Did it get eaten by a dog?"
"Shut up!" Lu Ze was infuriated by my words and stepped forward as if he wanted to do something.
I met his gaze fearlessly, my eyes cold: "What? Do you want to hit me? Let everyone see how you—Lu Da Cai Zi—can only shirk responsibility and hit women?"
Lu Ze's fists clenched and then relaxed. In the end, he shot me a resentful glare as he dragged the still sobbing Lin Weiwei away, looking dejected.
Watching their pitiful retreat, I felt no stirrings in my heart. I knew that this level of setback was far from enough to truly hurt them. The real blow that would pierce their hearts was yet to come.
On my side, everything was progressing in a positive direction. Good news came from my father. After a thorough investigation, it turned out that the Investment Project was indeed a complete scam! Thankfully, my timely warning had saved the company from disaster. My father began to see me in a new light and even started consulting me on some minor decisions.
My academic journey was also smooth sailing. Excellent grades, competition awards, and active participation in several research projects had garnered the attention of several heavyweight professors at the college. One of them, a leading figure in the field domestically, even offered to be my recommender to support my application to top universities abroad.
In my Last Life, this was something I could hardly have dreamed of. A bright future was slowly unfolding before me.
Lu Ze and I stood like two diverging paths at a crossroads—one ascending and the other descending, with an ever-widening gap between us. Meanwhile, the one heading downward seemed lost in his own world, stubbornly blaming all his misfortunes on someone who had long since turned away and no longer cared for him.
It was truly both sad and laughable.
