The truth revealed in A Yu's Diary is too heavy and bizarre, leaving me in a state of unease for a long time. It turns out that the so-called "haunting" stems from a woman's desperate love and the cruel fate that has plagued the Lin family for generations.
Now, I can confirm a few things:
1. The "A Yu" in the attic is still "alive," but in an extremely poor state, linked in a strange way to that puppet.
2. Granduncle San was searching for a way to break this condition during his lifetime, or at least to maintain the status quo and protect A Yu.
3. There is one or more individuals hiding in the shadows who know part or all of the secret and are trying to stop me. They manipulate the Paper Figurine and leave straw dolls to create panic.
4. As a "Lin Family Blood Relative," I seem to be the key to some ritual.
5. The Black Lacquered Wooden Box likely holds the key to breaking the curse, or perhaps… a more dangerous secret.
Who is the mastermind behind this? What is their purpose?
I turned my gaze towards the masked puppet in the attic. It stood there quietly, as if it were just an ordinary wooden object. But thinking about the possibility that it housed a tormented soul, perhaps even one that had developed an independent, malevolent consciousness, sent chills down my spine.
I could not wait any longer. I had to open that Lacquer Box as soon as possible.
This time, I had a new idea. Since the specially made Huai Ye Mo was key to opening the attic door, could it also be the key to opening the Lacquer Box?
I returned to the hall and placed the Lacquer Box on the Altar Table, facing the Seven Paper Figures. This time, I felt no fear; instead, I was filled with determination. I dipped my brush into the Huai Ye Mo and took a deep breath, beginning to carefully search for any subtle engravings on the surface of the Lacquer Box that resembled those on the door panel.
Sure enough, in an inconspicuous spot along the edge of the lid, I discovered extremely faint marks that almost blended with the wood grain. These marks were more complex than those on the door panel and seemed to form a… more intricate Sophora Flower Pattern, or perhaps a talisman?
I focused my mind and traced along the direction of these marks with strokes of Huai Ye Mo. The air filled with a mixture of herbs and Ink Fragrance, reaching a peak that even produced a peculiar humming sound akin to whispers.
The Seven Paper Figures on the Altar Table began to tremble slightly at first, then more violently, as if trying desperately to stop me. I knew this was the mastermind exerting their influence! They did not want me to open the box!
But I did not stop. My brush moved steadily until I completed the final stroke.
With a soft "click," clearer than when I opened the attic door, a gap appeared in the lid of the Black Lacquered Wooden Box!
A complex aroma, richer and older than anything in the attic, even carrying a hint of blood, seeped out from the gap.
I did it!
Just as I was about to reach out and lift the lid of the box, an unexpected change occurred!
The front door of the hall was suddenly slammed open from outside! A small figure rushed in like a ghost, heading straight for the Altar Table!
In the dim light, I recognized her—the Grocery Store Owner who had guided me earlier! Her face was devoid of kindness now; her eyes were bloodshot, her expression fierce, and she held a pair of gleaming scissors in her hand!
"Don't open it!" she screamed, her voice sharp and piercing. "Everything that belongs to A Yu should be mine!"
Mine! Everything of A Yu?! What was her relationship with A Yu?
Before she could rush towards me, she was blocked by the violently trembling Paper Figurines. The Seven Paper Figures seemed to come alive, extending their stiff arms to stand in front of her. It appeared that these Paper Figurines were not just a warning; they were indeed the last line of defense left by Granduncle San!
The landlady was temporarily entangled by the Paper Figurines, shrieking as she waved her scissors.
Suddenly, from the direction of the attic behind me, a chilling, sharp sound pierced through the air—no longer just sobbing... it was the woman's cackling laughter! Following that was the heavy sound of footsteps, slowly descending from the second floor!
That "substitute" puppet... it had also "awakened"!
I felt a surge of alarm. The landlady's target was the Lacquer Box, while the puppet coming down the stairs... its target was likely me, the Lin Family Blood Relative!
It seemed like a carefully orchestrated trap! Using me to open the Lacquer Box and draw out whatever was inside, while simultaneously activating the puppet to prepare for some sort of "ritual"? And the landlady aimed to seize what she desired amidst the chaos?
I had to make a decision immediately!
