The physics competition was just around the corner. The intense preparation during this time had forged an incredible rapport between us, who initially shared only a “tool” relationship. Our problem-solving approaches often aligned perfectly, and sometimes, a mere glance was enough to convey our thoughts to each other. We would argue passionately over differing solutions, but in the end, we always managed to find the optimal answer, exchanging smiles that made my heart skip a beat.
This kind of understanding felt like an addictive poison, drawing me deeper into its grasp.
On the last night before the competition, we finished reviewing the final set of mock exams in the library. Outside, the night had deepened, and there were few people left inside.
“Good luck tomorrow,” I said while packing my things, trying to mask my racing heart with a casual tone.
“Yeah,” he replied, stuffing a thick stack of materials into his backpack. “You too.”
A subtle silence enveloped the air. I stole a glance at him, and he happened to look back at me. Our eyes met in midair, sparking an invisible connection. Startled, I quickly lowered my gaze, pretending to organize my pencil case while my ears burned with embarrassment.
“Um…” I mustered the courage to break the suffocating silence. I wanted to express my gratitude for his patience and support during this time or perhaps say something else entirely.
Just then, a bright and deliberately sweet voice shattered the quiet.
“Jiang Chi!”
It was Meng Yao. Like a ghost, she appeared at the library entrance, cradling an extravagantly wrapped gift box tied with a giant pink bow. Striding over in her high heels, she approached our table with a calculated smile that screamed confidence.
“With the competition tomorrow, I brought you this! Wishing you success and victory!” She presented the ostentatious gift box to Jiang Chi, her voice dripping with sweetness that sent shivers down my spine.
Jiang Chi’s brows immediately furrowed into a frown as he didn’t even glance at the box. “No need,” he said firmly, leaving no room for negotiation.
“Oh come on! Just accept it! I went to several temples to get this lucky charm just for you!” Meng Yao insisted, even reaching out to push the gift into Jiang Chi’s arms.
Jiang Chi stepped back abruptly, avoiding her touch, his expression growing colder by several degrees. “I said no,” he replied, impatience creeping into his voice.
Meng Yao’s smile faltered slightly as embarrassment flickered in her eyes. She turned her gaze toward me for help; her expression was complex—part pleading, part warning, and perhaps even a hint of… boasting? It was as if she was saying: Did you see that? Only I dare to act this way toward him! You better say something or you won’t have it easy either!
I felt a chill run down my spine under her gaze and wished I could disappear on the spot. In this annual drama scene unfolding before me, all I wanted was to hide as far away as possible!
“Jiang Chi,” Meng Yao took a deep breath as if resolved to make a bold move. She raised her voice suddenly, capturing the attention of everyone still in the library. “Actually… I’ve liked you for a long time! Ever since I first saw you in freshman year! Can you… can you give me a chance?”
Wow—!!!
It felt like a bomb had been dropped in the library! Everyone stopped what they were doing and turned their eyes toward us with expressions filled with shock and excitement at this juicy gossip!
I was completely frozen. Meng Yao… she actually confessed to Jiang Chi at this moment, right in front of me and so many others?! Had she lost her mind?!
