Gunfire: Meeting You

The roar of the engine nearly drowned out the distant sounds of gunfire. I moved swiftly through the ruins like an agile cheetah, carrying my "weapon"—the camera—as I searched for the best vantage point. Adrenaline surged through my veins, bringing not fear, but an overwhelming excitement. Damn this profession! 0

“Zhi Yi! Come back! There was gunfire just ahead!” My partner, Old Wang, shouted from behind in a low voice, urgency lacing his words. 0

“Just a little further, just a bit more!” I didn’t look back, my eyes glued to the viewfinder. In the frame, several dark figures moved quickly behind the rubble, their guns spitting fire. 0

Now’s my chance! I held my breath and placed my finger on the record button. 0

Suddenly, a gust of wind swept in from the side, and several figures clad in camouflage appeared like ghosts, moving with astonishing speed. The leader, tall and lean, had eyes sharp as blades that pierced directly through me from beneath his tactical helmet. 0

Li Heng. 0

He didn’t even bother to glance at me; instead, he signaled to those behind him. Two soldiers immediately grabbed my arms with incredible force, dragging me toward safety as if I were a mere chicken. 0

“Let go! What are you doing?! I’m working!” I struggled in frustration, nearly dropping the camera. 0

At that moment, Li Heng turned his head. The face that once made my heart race was now shrouded in frost. 0

“ Reporter Xu, this is a designated area where the commander has ordered you to evacuate,” his voice came through the communicator—cold and devoid of any personal emotion. “Your actions have posed a serious threat to yourself and those around you.” 0

“I need firsthand material! It’s my duty!” I tilted my head defiantly to meet his gaze. 0

“My duty,” he interrupted me with an undeniable tone, “is to prevent any unnecessary sacrifices, including your reckless disregard for consequences.” 0

Reckless? I almost laughed in anger. He didn’t understand at all! He had no idea what journalism meant! 0

“Lieutenant Li, you have no right to interfere with my freedom of reporting!” 0

"Here," he stepped forward, an overwhelming sense of pressure emanating from him, "I have the authority to stop any actions that may lead to casualties. Leave immediately, that is an order." 0

He ignored my protests and turned to the soldiers, commanding, "Ensure Reporter Xu returns safely to the camp." 0

I was forcibly taken away from the smoke-filled "front line." 0

Looking back, Li Heng and his team had already vanished among the ruins, like silent statues guarding that dangerous land. 0

I wiped the sweat and dust from my face with force, a surge of unnamed anger boiling inside me. 0

Fine, Li Heng. 0

Just wait. 0

Do you think this will stop me? 0

Dream on! 0

I glanced down at the camera; amidst the chaos earlier, it seemed I had still managed to capture some footage. 0

A smirk of provocation involuntarily crept onto my lips. 0

This game of cat and mouse has only just begun. 0

Back at the temporary base, Old Wang was still nervously rambling, "I told you, girl, you’re too reckless! Bullets were flying right over your head! What if..." 0

"There is no 'what if,'" I interrupted him, starting to check the footage. "Old Wang, bring me the spare batteries." 0

He looked at me, hesitated for a moment, then sighed and turned to find the batteries. 0

I knew what he wanted to say. 0

It was nothing more than urging me to behave and not cause trouble for the Peacekeeping Forces. 0

But I couldn't do that. 0

I didn’t come here for a vacation or to write glorifying reports. 0

I came to document the truth. 0

Even if that truth often comes with danger and bloodshed. 0

I quickly replayed the footage I had captured earlier; although it was shaky, I could vaguely see scenes of gunfire. 0

Not enough. 0

It was still far from enough. 0
I needed a closer distance, a clearer image, a deeper interview. 0
Li Heng, do you want to keep me in the safe zone? 0
Then I will charge out. 0
I watched the fleeting, cold profile of Li Heng on the screen. 0
Silently, I thought: Just wait, Mr. Captain Li. 0
Our contest has only just begun. 0
I copied the materials to my computer and began to devise the next interview plan. 0
My gaze fell on the simple Regional Map on the wall. 0
That besieged village... 0
Perhaps it was a breakthrough point. 0
