My relationship with Li Heng finally entered a "normal" phase. No longer were we cautiously testing the waters or maintaining an ambiguous distance. Like all couples who have reunited, we began to date and rediscover each other.
After he was transferred back to headquarters, he remained busy with work, but whenever he had free time, he would come to find me. We went to the movies together, strolled through parks, sampled street food, and sometimes just stayed at home doing nothing, simply enjoying each other's quiet company.
He was no longer the silent type he used to be. He shared stories from his work (of course, within the bounds of confidentiality) and recounted his experiences from the past few years. He would even clumsily attempt to say sweet nothings. Although most of the time his words fell short or sounded a bit silly, I knew it was his most genuine expression.
Gradually, I learned to let go of my pride and pretenses in front of him. I would act cute, complain, and reveal my most vulnerable side. He always listened patiently and then offered me a warm embrace or comforted me in his own unique, somewhat awkward way. For instance, when I broke down in tears due to work stress, he would fumble to wipe my tears while saying, "Why are you crying? If the sky falls, I'll hold it up."
Though his approach was very straightforward, it somehow brought me comfort. We were both making an effort to readjust to each other and make up for lost time. Of course, there were also frictions and arguments. After all, we had both changed significantly and had strong-willed and stubborn sides.
Fortunately, we had learned to communicate and compromise. No longer did we avoid problems or resort to silent treatment like we did in our younger days. Instead, we would sit down and have honest conversations about our feelings.
Then, we found a balance that we could both accept. This mature and rational approach strengthened our relationship. My career was also thriving. The report on the Peacekeeping Operation earned me the highest award in the domestic journalism field. I became a somewhat well-known journalist, with more opportunities available to me.
However, I did not leave the front lines. I still loved this job, loved documenting the truth and conveying voices. I just became more mindful of safety, no longer impulsive and reckless as before. Because I knew there was someone in this world waiting for me to come home safely.
Li Heng was very supportive of my work. Although he still worried about my safety, he no longer tried to interfere with my choices as he had before. Instead, he would remind me repeatedly to be careful before each business trip. After I left, he quietly followed my updates, waiting for news of my safe return.
This feeling of being cared for and cherished was very warm. One day, after finishing an interview out of town, I returned home. As I opened the door, a delicious aroma wafted through the air. Li Heng was in the kitchen, busy wearing an apron. The setting sun streamed through the window, casting a soft glow around him.
Hearing the door open, he turned around and smiled gently when he saw me. "You're back? Are you tired? Go wash your hands; dinner will be ready soon."
I watched his busy figure and the steaming home-cooked dishes on the table, and a certain part of my heart felt completely filled. This was… the life I wanted.
With a passionate career, a warm home, and someone who loves, understands, and supports me...
I walked over and hugged him from behind, burying my face in his broad back.
“Li Heng.”
“Hmm?”
“Thank you.”
Thank you for coming back to my side. Thank you for giving me a chance to start anew.
He turned around, pulled me into his embrace, and leaned down to kiss my forehead.
“Fool.”
His voice was deep and gentle.
Outside the window, night had fallen, and the city lights began to twinkle.
In the kitchen, the aroma of food wafted through the air.
Everything felt so real, so warm.
I lifted my head and looked into his eyes, which were so close.
In them, I saw my reflection.
And I also saw... our future within reach.
I stood on my tiptoes and kissed his lips.
