He was wearing an obviously ill-fitting, cheap suit, holding a tray as he navigated through the crowd, surprisingly working as a waiter here.
It seemed he noticed me too; his gaze was complicated, and he instinctively wanted to hide.
I ignored him and walked straight to the center of the venue.
As the president of Jiang Group now, I was naturally the center of attention.
Amidst the clinking of glasses and mingling of guests, I handled the greetings and compliments from various people with ease.
Halfway through, I stepped out to the terrace for some fresh air.
Gu Mingxuan followed me.
“Jiang Yao,” he said, his voice tinged with a hint of humility.
I turned to look at him.
After a few months apart, he seemed to have aged ten years; the sparkle in his eyes had vanished.
“Is there something you need?” I asked, my tone distant.
“I…” He rubbed his hands together, looking anxious. “I saw that you’re doing well now, and I’m really happy for you.”
“Is that so?” I replied coldly. “Whether I’m doing well or not seems to have nothing to do with you.”
“I know… I was wrong to you before,” he lowered his head. “I realize my mistakes now, truly. Jiang Yao, can you… give me another chance?”
I almost laughed in disbelief.
Had he lost his memory? Or did he think I was foolish?
“Gu Mingxuan,” I looked at him and spoke slowly, “we ended a long time ago. And do you really think you’re in any position to ask for another chance looking like this?”
His face instantly flushed red, as if he had been slapped hard.
“I… I know I don’t deserve you now,” his voice choked with emotion, “but I will work hard! I will stand up again! Jiang Yao, will you wait for me?”
“Wait for what?” I replied sharply. “Sorry, my time is precious; I can’t waste it on a treacherous scoundrel.”
“A good horse doesn’t turn back to eat old grass; besides, this grass has long since rotted.”
“Get lost; don’t dirty my eyes.”
With that, I turned away from him and walked back into the venue.
Behind me, it seemed that a suppressed cry could be heard.
Ah, if I had known it would come to this, why did I act as I did back then?
Returning to the venue, Chen Shiyan was standing not far away, waiting for me. He handed me a glass of champagne. “Finished chatting?”
“Mm.” I took the glass, “Just an inconsequential person.”
He looked at me, his gaze carrying a hint of inquiry. “Feeling down?”
“No,” I replied. “It’s just that some people really refresh my understanding of what it means to be shameless.”
Chen Shiyan didn’t press further; he simply stood there with me, quietly watching the night view outside the window. His presence was like a calming pill, making me feel incredibly at ease.
When the party ended, he drove me home. As we arrived at my building, he didn’t leave immediately.
“Jiang Yao,” he suddenly spoke, his voice low and deep, “Can I pursue you?”
My hand paused on the car door, my heart racing wildly.
Here it comes! Finally!
I took a deep breath and turned to look at him, meeting his deep ocean-like gaze.
I smiled, my expression sly yet bright. “ manager Chen, the line of people wanting to pursue me stretches all the way to France. Are you sure you want to join this fiercely competitive crowd?”
He looked at me, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, but his eyes were exceptionally serious. “I’m sure.”
“And,” he leaned closer, his warm breath brushing against my ear, “I’m confident I’ll win.”
My cheeks flushed hotly as I pushed open the car door and practically fled from the vehicle.
“Well then… let’s see how you perform!”
