I saw myself desperately rushing into the fire scene, wanting to rescue Gu Jing Shen, who was trapped inside.
I felt the weight of a collapsing beam hit me, yet I still held onto Gu Jing Shen tightly.
I was engulfed by the great fire, but I never let go of Gu Jing Shen.
Tears streamed down my face, unable to be held back any longer.
Gu Jing Shen turned his head to look at me, his gaze filled with complexity.
"Lin Wantang, what... what is happening?" he asked, his voice trembling.
I looked at him, my face streaked with tears.
"Gu Jing Shen, you finally... finally see it," I choked out.
Suddenly, Gu Jing Shen embraced me, his strength almost crushing me against him.
"I'm sorry, Lin Wantang, I'm so sorry..." he repeated over and over, his voice hoarse.
"I misunderstood you; I wronged you..."
I leaned against his chest, feeling his warmth and listening to his apologies, my heart a mix of emotions.
I had waited for this day for far too long.
But when that day finally arrived, I realized that I wasn't as happy as I had imagined.
I know it's all too late.
"Gu Jing Shen, do you... do you remember that jade pendant?" I asked softly.
Gu Jing Shen nodded. "I remember."
I took the jade pendant out of my pocket and handed it to Gu Jing Shen.
"This... this was left to me by my mother. She said... it could... bring us..."
Before I could finish my sentence, Gu Jing Shen suddenly interrupted me.
"Lin Wantang, are you hiding something from me?" He looked into my eyes, his gaze sharp.
I lowered my head, unable to meet his gaze.
"I... I’m not," I whispered.
Gu Jing Shen stared at me intently, as if trying to see through my soul.
"Lin Wantang, look at me!" He raised his voice, his tone stern.
Slowly, I lifted my head and looked at him, my eyes filled with helplessness and sorrow.
"Gu Jing Shen, I... I have cancer. Advanced stage," I said softly, my voice trembling.
Gu Jing Shen was stunned, his eyes wide open in disbelief as he looked at me.
"What... what did you say?" he asked with a trembling voice, seemingly unable to believe his ears.
I gazed at him, tears streaming down my face once more.
"I said, I have cancer, late stage," I repeated calmly.
Gu Jing Shen suddenly took a few steps back, his face pale.
"It’s impossible... impossible..." he murmured, shaking his head repeatedly.
"Lin Wantang, you’re lying to me. You must be lying to me..."
I looked at him in silence.
I knew he needed time to accept this reality.
Gu Jing Shen abruptly rushed to the computer, frantically flipping through my medical records.
He saw my diagnosis, my chemotherapy records, and the countless times I had brushed against death.
His hands began to tremble, his body swayed, and his eyes were filled with shock, pain, and regret.
"Lin Wantang, why... why didn’t you tell me?" he asked hoarsely, tears streaming down his cheeks.
I looked at him, my heart aching like a knife.
"I... I don't want to worry you," I said softly.
Gu Jing Shen suddenly rushed over and held me tightly.
"You fool, you absolute fool..." he cried, "How could you be so foolish..."
I leaned into his embrace, feeling his tears, my heart filled with bitterness.
"Gu Jing Shen, I'm sorry..." I choked out.
Just then, the door to the archives was suddenly pushed open.
Su Nian walked in.
She paused for a moment when she saw Gu Jing Shen and me in each other's arms.
"Jing Shen, what are you...?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Gu Jing Shen released me, turned around, and looked at Su Nian.
