His gaze was cold, devoid of any warmth.
"Su Nian, what are you doing here?" he asked icily.
Su Nian looked at Gu Jing Shen, her eyes filled with fear.
"Jing Shen, I... I was just worried about you," she said softly.
Gu Jing Shen let out a cold laugh. "Worried about me? Su Nian, do you think I would believe your nonsense?"
He stepped closer to Su Nian, his eyes brimming with anger and disgust.
"Five years ago, that Great Fire, it was you who set it, wasn't it?"
Su Nian's face turned pale, her body trembling.
"No... it wasn't me..." She shook her head desperately, trying to deny it.
Gu Jing Shen suddenly grabbed her by the throat and pinned her against the wall.
"Su Nian, at this point, do you still want to argue?" he said through gritted teeth. "Do you think I don't know what you've done?"
Su Nian struggled to breathe, fighting against Gu Jing Shen's grip but unable to break free.
"Jing Shen... I... I was wrong..." she gasped intermittently. "Please... let me go..."
Gu Jing Shen looked at her, his expression as cold as ever.
"Su Nian, I gave you a chance, but you didn't cherish it," he said coldly. "From today on, you are no longer an employee of the Gu Group. Get out!"
With a forceful shove, he threw Su Nian away.
Su Nian fell to the ground in a disheveled manner, clutching her neck and coughing violently.
She looked at Gu Jing Shen, her eyes filled with fear and despair.
"Gu Jing Shen, you... you will regret this..." she rasped.
Gu Jing Shen ignored her, turning to look at me instead.
His gaze was gentle, filled with remorse.
"Lin Wantang, let's go," he said softly, taking my hand and leading me out of the archive room.
In the corridor, Gu Jing Shen suddenly stopped.
"Wait."
He turned his head, casting a cold glance at the trembling Su Nian on the floor.
"Don't forget to wipe the surveillance footage here clean."
"I understand, General Gu," came a cold voice from behind, devoid of any emotion.
A man dressed in black slowly emerged from the shadows, adjusting his Golden Threads glasses on his nose.
A glimmer of amusement flashed in his eyes behind the lenses.
Gu Jing Shen's words struck me like a thunderbolt, shattering my chaotic thoughts.
Wipe the surveillance footage?
Why would we need to delete the footage?
Could it be… that he already knows something?
A wave of intense unease surged within me, and I instinctively glanced at Gu Jing Shen.
He was coldly staring at Su Nian on the ground, his eyes filled with disgust and… murderous intent.
I had never seen him display such an expression, like an enraged beast ready to tear apart everything in front of him.
“Jing Shen, you…” I began to speak with a trembling voice, unsure of what to say.
Gu Jing Shen ignored me, his gaze fixed coldly on Su Nian as he said, “Su Nian, I’m giving you one last chance to tell me everything you know.”
Su Nian’s body trembled violently. She lifted her head to look at Gu Jing Shen, her eyes filled with fear and despair.
“I… I…” she stammered, unable to form a complete sentence.
Gu Jing Shen slowly crouched down, gripping Su Nian’s chin and forcing her to meet his gaze.
“Su Nian, do you really think the things you’ve done can remain hidden?” he said with a cold laugh. “The Great Fire five years ago, and Lin Wantang’s illness—everything is connected to you, isn’t it?”
Su Nian's pupils dilated sharply as she desperately shook her head, trying to deny it.
