My name is Lin Wei, an ordinary university student. To be honest, I never imagined that one day I would have anything to do with the aloof academic star Shen Yi, let alone get involved in a cliché scenario like being a pretend couple. But life is full of surprises; you can never predict what will happen next.
It all started with my overbearing mother. One day, I was lounging on my dorm bed, engrossed in a drama, when my phone suddenly vibrated violently. I glanced at it and felt a wave of dread wash over me—my mom was calling via video.
"Hello, Mom." I forced myself to sound cheerful as I answered the call.
"Lin Wei, why did you take so long to pick up?" My mom's voice was full of energy. "I heard from your cousin that you're in a relationship?"
I nearly fell off my bed in shock. Damn that cousin of mine, why did she have to spill the beans so quickly?
"Uh... yeah," I replied, trying to sound casual while my heart raced. This lie wasn’t something I had willingly concocted; it was born out of desperation. The last time I went home, my mom started nagging me about finding a boyfriend, and in a moment of panic, I blurted out that I had one. Little did I know that this lie would snowball out of control.
"Really? That's wonderful! Let me see which lucky guy has caught your eye!" My mom sounded as excited as a child.
Panic set in as I stammered, "Well... he's not here right now..."
"Then have him video call me tonight!" My mom insisted.
I felt like crying but could only agree. After hanging up, I was at a loss for what to do. Was I really going to have to find someone to pretend to be my boyfriend?
Just when I was feeling hopeless, a figure suddenly flashed through my mind—Shen Yi.
Shen Yi was my high school classmate and the younger brother of my best friend. He excelled academically and was exceptionally good-looking—truly the kind of child every parent dreams of. Although we weren't very close, we were at least acquainted.
With a glimmer of hope, I sent Shen Yi a message on WeChat. To my surprise, he replied almost instantly.
"Pretend boyfriend? Sure." His simple response filled me with relief.
"Really? Thank you so much!" I replied excitedly.
"No need to thank me." Shen Yi maintained his usual succinct style. "You helped me when we were kids; I've always remembered it."
I was taken aback. When we were kids? What had I done for him that he would remember for so long?
But now is not the time to dwell on that. I quickly arranged a meeting time with Shen Yi to discuss the details.
The next afternoon, we met at a café near the school. Shen Yi arrived ten minutes early, which made me feel a bit embarrassed.
"Sorry to keep you waiting," I said, sitting down breathlessly.
Shen Yi shook his head. "It's okay, I just got here not long ago."
We ordered two cups of coffee and began discussing the details of "Pretend Couple." Shen Yi took out a prepared agreement, and I couldn't help but be impressed by his efficiency.
"This is the Pretend Couple agreement; we need to set some ground rules," Shen Yi pushed the document toward me. "First, we can't interfere with each other's personal lives; second, we can't disclose that our relationship is fake; and third, and most importantly, we must not develop real feelings for each other."
I read through the agreement carefully and found it reasonable, so I signed it without hesitation.
"Well then, the performance starts tonight," I said nervously.
Shen Yi nodded. "Don't be nervous; just follow what we discussed."
At eight o'clock that evening, I took a deep breath and dialed the video call. My mom answered immediately, her face filled with anticipation.
"Mom, this is Shen Yi, my boyfriend," I introduced him while trying to sound calm.
Shen Yi smiled and greeted her. "Hello, Auntie, I'm Shen Yi. It's a pleasure to meet you."
I was surprised by Shen Yi's natural demeanor; he acted as if we were genuinely in love. My mom was clearly very pleased with him, smiling widely.
"Oh my, this young man is quite handsome and so polite," my mom praised. "How did you two meet? How long have you been together?"
I panicked inside; we hadn't discussed these details beforehand. Just when I didn't know how to respond, Shen Yi spoke up.
"We're high school classmates and have kept in touch. We ran into each other again at university and realized we had developed different feelings for each other, so we got together." Shen Yi spoke so sincerely that even I almost believed it.
"Yes, that's right," I quickly agreed.
My mother listened with great interest and asked many details. Shen Yi responded effortlessly, occasionally helping me cover up my lies. I secretly admired his quick thinking while also feeling relieved.
After the video ended, I couldn't help but exclaim, "Shen Yi, your acting skills are amazing!"
Shen Yi smiled faintly and replied, "I was just speaking the truth."
I was puzzled and didn't understand what he meant by that. However, seeing that he didn't want to elaborate, I decided not to press further.
The next day, an idea struck me, and I said to Shen Yi, "How about we show off our love on social media? It would be more convincing."
After a moment of contemplation, Shen Yi surprisingly agreed. He posted a childhood photo of us together with the caption "Long time no see." Looking at that picture, I suddenly remembered—it was from a summer camp we attended in elementary school.
Our social media exploded with comments as everyone speculated about when we got together. Watching the flood of notifications on my screen filled me with an indescribable feeling.
This little act seemed to be much more entertaining than I had anticipated.
I sneaked a glance at Shen Yi's social media and found that he had set our relationship status to "Close Friends." This detail warmed my heart but also left me somewhat confused—was he really that dedicated?
And so, our "relationship" officially began. Although it was all pretend, I found myself inexplicably looking forward to what would happen next. After all, who knew if this little act might actually turn into something real?
