I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection.
The person in the mirror looked dazed, with a pale face, as if just waking from a nightmare.
But in reality, I could no longer distinguish between what was real and what was a dream.
In recent days, my ability to manifest dreams had spiraled out of control. The scenes, characters, and even those bizarre creatures from my dreams would appear in the real world without warning.
At first, it was just harmless little incidents. For instance, I dreamed of wearing a pink puffy dress, and when I woke up, I found myself actually wearing it. Or I would taste a sour candy in my dream, only to wake up still lingering with that tangy flavor in my mouth.
I thought it was just harmless fun and didn't pay much attention to it.
Until one day, I suddenly saw a winged elephant flying past the window in my office.
I was so startled that I nearly fell off my chair, yet my colleagues acted as if they hadn’t seen anything unusual and continued with their work.
In that moment, I realized something was seriously wrong.
“Lin Wei, have you been too tired lately?” Shen Yi asked with a furrowed brow as he looked at me. “You look terrible. Do you want to take a few days off to rest?”
I shook my head and forced a smile. “I’m fine; maybe I just didn’t sleep well last night.”
Shen Yi hesitated for a moment before gently patting my shoulder. “Don’t push yourself too hard. If you need anything, just let me know, okay?”
I nodded, but inside I felt a mix of emotions.
How could I explain to him that even sleeping had become a dangerous affair for me?
Every time I closed my eyes, I worried about bringing something strange into the real world again.
Yet, I couldn't bear to give up this ability.
It is the unique connection between Shen Yi and me, our shared secret. If I were to lose this ability, would there still be anything special between Shen Yi and me?
I dared not dwell on the answer to that question.
"Lin Wei, what's wrong with you?"
Shen Yi's voice pulled me back to reality. It was then that I realized I had unknowingly transformed the office into a tropical rainforest.
My colleagues stared in bewilderment at the suddenly appearing vines and trees; someone even had their documents snatched away by a monkey that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.
"I... I..."
I opened my mouth but couldn't find the words to explain.
Without hesitation, Shen Yi grabbed my hand and led me outside.
"Forget about this, just come with me."
He took me to the rooftop, where no one was around, and only a gentle breeze blew.
"Can you tell me now? What exactly happened?" Shen Yi looked at me earnestly, his eyes filled with concern.
I took a deep breath and recounted everything that had happened recently in detail.
After finishing, I nervously watched Shen Yi, fearing he might think I was crazy.
Shen Yi remained silent for a long time before finally letting out a soft sigh. "I should have realized it sooner. Your unusual behavior lately, those strange things that appeared and disappeared... it all makes sense now."
"You... you believe what I'm saying?" I could hardly believe it.
"Fool, of course I believe you." Shen Yi affectionately rubbed my nose. "But this ability is indeed too dangerous. You need to learn to control it, or else..."
Before he could finish his sentence, a loud crash suddenly echoed from downstairs.
We both rushed to the edge of the rooftop and looked down, instantly gasping in shock.
A massive creature with the head of a crocodile, the body of a lion, and the tail of a scorpion was rampaging below. People screamed and scattered in all directions, chaos erupting in the streets.
"Oh my God..." I covered my mouth, unable to believe my eyes. "This is... this is the monster I dreamed about last night!"
Shen Yi's expression changed. "Lin Wei, you need to find a way to send it back!"
"I... I don't know what to do!" I shook my head in panic. "I've never tried to actively control this ability!"
"Calm down and think of a solution." Shen Yi held my hand tightly. "I believe you can do it."
I took a deep breath, trying hard to steady myself.
I closed my eyes, attempting to visualize the scene of that monster disappearing.
But just then, a cry of pain broke through my concentration.
I opened my eyes wide and saw Shen Yi clutching his arm, blood seeping through his fingers.
The creature had somehow climbed up to the rooftop and was baring its teeth as it approached us menacingly.
"Shen Yi!" I screamed, rushing to his side.
"Don't worry about me, think of a way!" Shen Yi gritted his teeth.
I looked at his pale face, feeling both guilty and heartbroken.
It was all because of me... If it weren't for my uncontrolled abilities, Shen Yi wouldn't have been hurt.
A surge of unprecedented determination welled up within me.
I stood up and stared directly at the menacing monster.
"Go back!" I shouted, desperately imagining its disappearance in my mind.
A miracle happened.
The monster's figure began to blur, eventually transforming into a wisp of green smoke that dissipated into the air.
I let out a sigh of relief and turned to throw myself into Shen Yi's arms.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..." I choked out, "It's all my fault."
"Fool, you have nothing to apologize for." Shen Yi gently stroked my hair, "You did well."
"But... but you got hurt." I lifted my head, tears welling in my eyes as I looked at him, "It's all because of my damned ability..."
"Shh, don't say that." Shen Yi tenderly wiped away the tears on my face, "This little injury is nothing. What about you? Are you okay?"
I shook my head. "I'm fine. But... I think I need to give up this ability. It's too dangerous; I can't control it."
"Are you sure?" Shen Yi looked at me seriously, "I know what this ability means to you."
"I'm sure," I said firmly. "I can't let you or anyone else get hurt because of me again."
Shen Yi fell silent for a moment before gently sighing, "If this is your decision, I respect it. But Lin Wei, I want you to know that I love you as a person, not because of any special abilities you may have. Even if you were just an ordinary person, I would still love you."
I was taken aback, a warm current surging through my heart.
"Really?" I asked softly.
"Of course it's true, silly." Shen Yi affectionately brushed my nose with his fingers. "In my heart, you will always be the most special person."
I tightly embraced Shen Yi, tears streaming down my face uncontrollably.
In that moment, I suddenly understood a profound truth.
What is truly precious is not some magical ability, but the people who can embrace and accept you.
After returning home, I solemnly put away the ring that recorded dreams.
Perhaps one day, when I learn to fully control this ability, I will wear it again.
But for now, I want to enjoy an ordinary life with the person I love the most.
Because I know that no matter what happens, he will be by my side.
This is the most precious gift of all.
