I decided to escalate my teasing of Gu Yan.
That morning, I tiptoed into Gu Yan's room. He was still sound asleep, and I couldn't help but steal a few glances at him. In his slumber, Gu Yan seemed less cold than usual and even a bit adorable. I shook my head, reminding myself of the purpose of my visit.
I looked around and quickly spotted my target—Gu Yan's treasured limited edition figurine. It was one of his most prized possessions, something he never let me touch. I carefully took the figurine and hid it deep in the closet of my room.
As expected, when Gu Yan woke up and discovered the figurine was missing, he panicked. He rummaged through his belongings, turning the room into a mess. I pretended to be nonchalant and asked him what he was looking for.
"My limited edition figurine is gone!" Gu Yan exclaimed, sweat beading on his forehead. "Have you seen it?"
Feigning surprise, I replied, "Oh no, could it have accidentally been swept into the trash?"
Gu Yan's face turned pale instantly. Seeing him so anxious made me feel a bit guilty, but I also found it oddly amusing.
Just as Gu Yan was about to dash out to search the trash, I stopped him. "Wait! I'm just messing with you. The figurine is with me."
He let out a sigh of relief but then shot me a glare. "Su Qing, can you not be so childish?"
I stuck out my tongue, thinking this was just the beginning.
The next day, I came up with a new idea. While Gu Yan was out, I secretly tossed his white shirt and my red dress into the washing machine together. When the laundry was done, I realized I had made a huge mistake—Gu Yan's shirt had turned completely pink.
When Gu Yan returned and saw his "new shirt," his face turned green. "Su Qing, you did this on purpose, didn't you?"
I put on a pitiful expression and said, "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to. How about I buy you a new one?"
Gu Yan sighed and said nothing more. I secretly observed his expression and found that although he seemed helpless, he didn't really appear angry.
A few days later, I decided to pull a big stunt. I lay in bed, pretending to be sick. When Gu Yan came in and saw me like this, he immediately became anxious. "What's wrong? Where do you feel unwell?"
I weakly replied, "Dizzy and feeling weak all over."
Without a second thought, Gu Yan insisted on taking me to the hospital. I quickly stopped him, saying, "No need, it’s probably just a cold. I just need some rest."
And so, Gu Yan began to fuss around taking care of me. He made me porridge and clumsily tried to wipe my sweat. Watching the usually cold Gu Yan care for me so awkwardly made me want to laugh, but I held it in for fear of giving myself away.
That evening, Gu Yan was playing games in the living room. I tiptoed behind him and suddenly shouted, "Ah!"
Gu Yan nearly jumped off the couch in fright, dropping his phone on the floor. He turned around and glared at me in annoyance. "Su Qing, what are you trying to do?"
I grinned mischievously, "Nothing much, just wanted to tease you."
Gu Yan shook his head helplessly and picked up his phone to continue playing. I noticed that even though he complained about me, he still helped tidy up the cushions that had fallen on the floor.
As the days passed, I realized that Gu Yan wasn't as indifferent as he appeared. One day, after working late, I returned home close to midnight. To my surprise, there was a steaming takeout meal waiting for me on the table.
"You’re back," Gu Yan said as he walked out of his room. "Hurry up and eat while it's hot."
I felt a surge of warmth in my heart. "Did you order this for me?"
Gu Yan casually said, "I happen to be hungry too, so I ordered an extra portion."
Although he said this, I knew it was his way of showing concern. From that day on, every time I worked late, I would receive takeout ordered by Gu Yan. He would also remind me to rest early and not to overexert myself.
One day, the magical app suddenly predicted that Gu Yan liked strawberry cake. I thought to myself that it was finally time to test the app's accuracy. I specifically went to the bakery and bought a beautifully crafted strawberry cake.
"Gu Yan, I bought you a strawberry cake!" I excitedly placed the cake in front of him.
Gu Yan looked at the cake, then at me, and said flatly, "I don't like sweet food."
I immediately felt deflated, thinking that the app had indeed made another mistake. I sat down beside him in disappointment, staring blankly at the exquisite cake.
To my surprise, Gu Yan picked up a fork and slowly started eating the cake. I looked at him in astonishment and asked, "Didn't you say you don't like sweet food?"
Without looking up, Gu Yan replied, "We can't waste food."
Watching him eat the cake bite by bite made me unable to hold back my laughter. This contradictory guy clearly enjoyed it.
Reflecting on all the little "teases" during this time, I suddenly realized that Gu Yan had been accommodating my whims all along. No matter how unreasonable my actions were, he would always help me clean up the mess. Although he often acted disdainful, his actions betrayed his true feelings.
Perhaps this was Gu Yan's way of expressing concern. With this thought, a warm feeling surged in my heart. Maybe my feelings for Gu Yan were no longer just those of a roommate.
