I stood in the bathroom, holding the pregnancy test stick that displayed two red lines, my heart racing as if it might leap out of my chest. This small plastic stick felt as heavy as a thousand pounds at that moment, carrying the weight of my future with Gu Yan. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my excited heart, but I couldn’t suppress the surge of joy and anxiety rising within me.
Pregnant? The news came too suddenly. Although Gu Yan and I were already married, we had never discussed having children. We were both busy with our careers, enjoying the sweetness of our life together. But now, a new life was quietly growing inside me, disrupting the peaceful rhythm of our lives.
I gently stroked my still unchanged abdomen, imagining a lovely little being. Would it be a boy or a girl? Would it resemble me more or take after Gu Yan? A smile involuntarily spread across my face, but reality quickly pulled me back.
How should I tell Gu Yan? I bit my lip, feeling anxious. He had been overwhelmed with an important project lately, and I didn’t want to add to his stress. Yet, how could I keep such an important matter from him?
I walked out of the bathroom and saw Gu Yan deeply engrossed in his work in the study. My heart twisted in knots. He sensed my gaze and looked up at me with a gentle smile. "What’s wrong, Qing Qing? Do you have something on your mind?"
I opened my mouth but couldn’t find the words. Seeing this, Gu Yan set aside his work and walked over to me, gently taking my hand. "Is something bothering you? You look a bit off."
Taking a deep breath, I summoned my courage and said, "Gu Yan, I... I have something to tell you."
"Go ahead," he said softly, his eyes filled with concern.
I bit my lip again and finally made up my mind: "I... I'm pregnant."
As soon as the words left my mouth, I nervously watched Gu Yan's face, fearing any sign of displeasure or worry. However, he was momentarily taken aback before his eyes lit up and a broad smile spread across his face.
"Really? Qing Qing, you’re not joking, are you?" His voice trembled with excitement.
I nodded, feeling tears welling up in my eyes without realizing it. "Yes, it’s true. I just took the test, and it’s positive."
Gu Yan pulled me into his arms tightly. I could feel his rapid heartbeat and the slight tremor in his arms. He whispered in my ear, "Qing Qing, thank you. This is the best gift that heaven has given us."
Hearing those words, the weight on my heart finally lifted. Tears flowed uncontrollably as I buried my face in Gu Yan's chest, feeling his warmth and strength.
Gu Yan gently stroked my back and said softly, "Don't worry, I will take good care of you and the baby. From now on, you are the most important person in our family."
I looked up at Gu Yan's determined yet gentle gaze, a wave of warmth surged within me. I knew I had found someone I could trust for a lifetime.
That night, we lay in bed, dreaming about our future life. Gu Yan excitedly talked about what he wanted to prepare for the baby, which room to turn into a nursery, and even started considering which school the child would attend in the future. Watching his childlike enthusiasm made me smile uncontrollably.
"What are you laughing at?" Gu Yan asked, looking at me with confusion.
I shook my head and replied with a smile, "It's nothing; I just think you look especially cute right now."
Gu Yan pretended to be angry and said, "I'm going to be a dad; how can you describe me as cute?"
I couldn't help but chuckle and pinched his cheek. "In my eyes, you'll always be that adorable big boy."
Gu Yan laughed and pulled me into his embrace, gently kissing my forehead. "And what about you? You're going to be a mom now; how does that feel?"
I fell silent for a moment before softly saying, "To be honest, I'm a bit scared. I don't know if I can be a good mother."
Gu Yan tenderly stroked my hair. "Don't be afraid; we will learn and grow together. I believe you will be a great mom."
From that day on, our lives underwent a tremendous change. Gu Yan began to devour parenting knowledge; our bookshelf was filled with books on prenatal care and child-rearing. He even downloaded several pregnancy tracking apps on his phone and checked the baby's development every day.
I often find myself amused by his enthusiasm. One time, he excitedly ran over to tell me, "Qing Qing, do you know? Our baby is now as big as a grape!"
I couldn't help but chuckle, "Oh really? What is our little grape doing right now?"
Gu Yan replied earnestly, "According to the app, the baby's fingers and toes have started to separate, and they might even be able to feel pain now. We need to be careful not to bump your belly."
Seeing his anxious expression, I burst into laughter, "Gu Yan, you're being a bit dramatic, aren't you? I've only just become pregnant; my belly hasn't even started to show yet."
Gu Yan scratched his head in embarrassment, "I just want to be a responsible dad-to-be."
I reached out and touched his face gently, saying softly, "You're already doing great. With you by my side, I feel so reassured."
Gu Yan began accompanying me to the hospital for check-ups, attentively listening to the doctor's advice and taking notes. He started paying attention to my diet, ensuring that I ate healthily and balanced. Sometimes, when I craved something late at night, he would get up without hesitation to prepare it for me.
One night, I suddenly had a strong craving for Sour and Spicy Noodles. Without a second thought, Gu Yan was ready to head out. I quickly grabbed his arm and said, "It's so late; where can you find Sour and Spicy Noodles?"
He smiled and said, "It's okay; I'll go to the supermarket to buy the ingredients and make them for you myself."
Seeing his serious demeanor filled me with warmth. I held his hand and softly said, "No need to go through all that trouble. Let's just have it tomorrow."
Gu Yan sat back on the bed and pulled me into his arms. "Qing Qing, just tell me what you want to eat. No matter when it is, I'll find a way to get it for you."
I leaned against his shoulder and happily said, "It's so wonderful having you by my side."
As my pregnancy progressed, my body began to change. Sometimes I felt discomfort, but every time I saw Gu Yan's worried gaze, I would force a smile, not wanting to burden him with my concerns.
One day, while I was in the kitchen preparing dinner, I suddenly felt a wave of dizziness. I leaned against the cabinet and took a few deep breaths. Just then, Gu Yan walked into the kitchen and noticed my pale face, immediately growing anxious.
"Qing Qing, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" He hurried to my side and placed a supportive hand on my shoulder.
I managed a weak smile. "It's nothing, just a bit tired."
Gu Yan frowned. "Don't push yourself. Come on, let me help you to the sofa to rest."
He carefully guided me to the living room and helped me lie down on the sofa. Then he rushed back to the kitchen and brought me a glass of warm water.
"Drink some water and take a little break," he said softly. "I'll handle dinner; you don't need to worry about it."
Watching him bustle around made my heart swell with gratitude. I knew I had found someone who truly cared for me, someone with whom I could spend my life.
During this period of pregnancy, I felt an unprecedented sense of happiness and security. Although there were occasional discomforts and worries, having Gu Yan by my side made all difficulties seem less daunting.
I often stroked my gradually protruding belly, imagining our future life together. I knew that we were about to enter a brand new phase in our lives. This unexpected surprise deepened our love and filled our future with anticipation.
Gu Yan, our unborn baby, and I—our little family—would become the most precious treasure in my life moving forward.
