After that night, I began to pay special attention to the surveillance footage around 3:33 AM. However, before I could find any valuable clues, a sensational incident occurred at the hospital.
Nurse Xiao Lin from the emergency department went missing.
The incident took place at 3:30 AM. The surveillance showed her taking elevator number six to the twelfth floor, specifically to the Dispensing Room, after which she never appeared on any camera again.
"Pull up all relevant surveillance footage," the voice of Director Wang was unusually stern in the office. Police officers, security personnel, and department heads gathered together. I sat in front of the computer, retrieving all the surveillance records from that night.
In the footage, Xiao Lin was wearing a white nurse's uniform, holding a stack of medical records as she entered elevator number six. The time displayed: 03:30:15.
The elevator ascended to the twelfth floor, and the doors opened. Xiao Lin stepped out of the elevator and turned towards the right, heading in the direction of the Dispensing Room. The time was: 03:32:45.
Then, something strange happened.
At 03:33:00, there was a slight distortion in the footage, as if there was an electrical interference. When the image returned to normal, the corridor was completely empty.
"Continue playing," said the Criminal Police Captain.
I fast-forwarded through three hours of footage, but Xiao Lin's figure never appeared again. The Dispensing Room, safety corridors, and all exits showed no record of her leaving.
"Check the elevator system logs," Director Wang commanded.
I pulled up the elevator operation logs. The data indicated that from 03:32:45 to 03:36:00, elevator number six remained on the twelfth floor without any activity.
"Could it be a blind spot for the cameras?" Security Chief Chen raised a question.
I shook my head. "There are four cameras in the 12th-floor corridor, providing 360-degree coverage. Unless..."
"Unless what?" the police officer pressed.
"Unless someone tampered with the surveillance records." I paused for a moment. "But our monitoring system uses blockchain technology, so any modifications would leave a trace."
The office fell silent. Just then, Doctor Zhang Yingxue suddenly spoke up, "Captain Chen, can you pull up the ICU surveillance records? Specifically for this time frame."
I complied. The footage from the ICU looked normal; Nurse Li was at the nurse's station recording patient data.
"Zoom in on Bed 3," Doctor Zhang instructed.
We all noticed something unusual: the cardiac monitor for the patient in Bed 3 showed sudden and severe fluctuations at 03:33, lasting a full three minutes. Strangely, the patient appeared completely normal, showing no signs of distress.
"This is impossible," an ICU Director exclaimed. "Based on that heart rate fluctuation, the patient should have exhibited severe symptoms."
I immediately pulled up the electronic medical records for the patient in Bed 3. Even more perplexingly, the medical record system indicated that all vital signs during that time were stable, completely contradicting what was shown in the surveillance footage.
"It seems our hospital system has quite a few issues," Doctor Zhang adjusted his glasses, his gaze meaningful.
Director Wang's expression darkened. "Let's keep these details under wraps for now. Captain Chen, you are responsible for cooperating with the police investigation, focusing on uncovering clues about Xiao Lin's disappearance."
After the meeting, I returned to the monitoring room and began to carefully sort through all the anomalies from that night. In addition to the known issues, I discovered a detail that could easily be overlooked: ten minutes before Xiaolin went missing, there was a brief chaos in the vehicle entry and exit records of the underground parking lot.
The surveillance showed a black van entering, but the exit camera did not record this vehicle leaving. The license plate recognition system indicated that the number was Jing A-MK852. However, when I attempted to further investigate this license plate information, the system displayed: No records found.
Just as I was preparing to delve deeper into the investigation, I suddenly received an anonymous email:
"Don't dig too deep; it's for your own good."
I looked up at the door's surveillance camera and noticed that the feed had inexplicably turned to static.
Was it a normal surveillance malfunction, or was someone doing this intentionally?
At that moment, I heard footsteps behind me. Turning around, I saw Dr. Zhang Yingxue.
"Captain Chen," she said with a serious expression, "I think we need to have a serious talk. About that specific time frame, about the anomalies in the electrocardiogram, and..."
She lowered her voice. "About that nonexistent operating room on Underground Level Three."
My heart suddenly raced. Underground Level Three? As far as I knew, there were only two levels underground in the hospital.
But what shocked me even more was that she was holding a key. The number on the key made me break out in a cold sweat:
B3-0333.
