On the way back, an unexpected incident occurred.
As they passed through a mountainous area, they were ambushed by a group of unidentified assailants. Ling Long had always known that Jiang Yuanfei was involved in unsavory dealings, and many people wanted him dead.
A bullet sliced through the air and pierced the horse's belly. Li Jinghuan reacted swiftly, jumping onto the carriage and scooping up Ling Long. With a leap, he landed on the ground, drawing his pistol and shouting, "Protect the lady!"
However, there were too many enemies. Li Jinghuan found himself outnumbered; one moment of distraction led to a sharp pain in his left arm as a bullet struck him. Realizing they couldn't stay there much longer, he made a quick decision to mount a horse, pulling Ling Long up behind him. He fired at several enemies closing in while galloping away.
They ran for what felt like an eternity before confirming that their pursuers had not followed. They stopped at an abandoned manor. Ling Long went to a nearby river to fetch some water and tended to Li Jinghuan's wound. As darkness fell and the mountain path became treacherous, they decided to rest for the night and regain their strength.
That evening, both harbored their own thoughts as the surroundings fell eerily quiet; even each other's breathing was distinctly audible. Li Jinghuan poked at the campfire, adding a few more logs before sitting beside Ling Long.
"Let’s leave," he suddenly said, catching her off guard as she looked at him in confusion.
"Stop pretending; you know what I mean. Are you really happy being with someone who doesn't love you, playing the role of another woman?" There was a hint of pleading in Li Jinghuan's voice.
Ling Long smirked slightly. "Ha, so you haven't given up yet." She stood up and brushed off the dust from her hands. "I won't go with you unless you can rise to a position higher than Jiang Yuanfei."
Li Jinghuan was provoked by her dismissive expression and jumped up, grabbing her shoulders as he shouted, "Why? Is wealth and power really that important to you?"
"Yes," Ling Long replied decisively.
Li Jinghuan was infuriated by her resolute tone. In a moment of heated impulse, he embraced her and pressed his lips against hers in a fervent kiss. Ling Long struggled fiercely but couldn't break free; in desperation, she bit down hard, only for him to endure the pain without letting go.
Under the moonlight, the woman's porcelain-white skin flushed slightly with anger.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed in the air. The two hurriedly separated and looked outside, only to see a figure swiftly leaving. It was too dark to see who it was, but from the clothing, it was clear that it was one of the servants accompanying them.
“It’s over.” Ling Long collapsed to the ground, her tear-filled eyes glaring at him with hatred. “Now you’re satisfied. Jiang Yuanfei will know, and I’ll surely die.”
“Then come with me, to the ends of the earth. I will protect you.” He sounded like a trapped beast, making one last desperate struggle.
Ling Long shook off his hand as he tried to help her up, standing tall and narrowing her eyes at Li Jinghuan. “It’s not certain that I’ll die!”
Li Jinghuan never expected Ling Long would betray him. The next day, back home, Ling Long cried as she threw herself into Jiang Yuanfei’s arms, pointing at Li Jinghuan and saying, “On the way back, that dog servant tried to assault me! Luckily, I was alert and didn’t give him a chance.”
Li Jinghuan looked at the tearful woman in disbelief, unable to comprehend that this was something she could do. When the hundred lashes fell upon him, he felt no pain; instead, it was as if his heart had been hollowed out. The cold wind howled in but could never fill the emptiness.
There was nothing left to cling to. Jiang Yuanfei was a man he knew well. He had assaulted his concubine; it couldn’t possibly end with just a hundred lashes. Staying here meant certain death.
The next day, as dawn broke in the east, a carriage awaited on the official road. A graceful woman emerged from the shadows and tossed a bundle to Li Jinghuan with a smile. “Thank me; if it weren’t for me, would you have escaped so smoothly?”
Li Jinghuan caught the bundle and hesitated for a moment before finally climbing into the carriage. Through the curtain, he said, “I will repay what I owe you.”
“Go!” The carriage sped away. He turned back for one last look at the woman; within her gaze was no longer just pure love. Ling Long, wait—one day you will regret this.
