She returned to Erlang Shen's Mansion with a complex mix of emotions. When she saw Erlang Shen pounce towards her with his big, watery eyes, her feelings became even more tangled, especially as she noticed the cool figure in white behind him and the grinning face of Yue Lao, who looked far too pleased for his age.
Erlang Shen clung tightly to her, his expression pitiful. "A Xiao, having a baby is really painful."
"Ah?"
With a sorrowful look, Erlang Shen continued, "When I turn into a rabbit, I'll have babies for you, so please don't marry him, okay?"
Deciding to remain silent about his nonsensical words, A Xiao turned her gaze to the real rabbit behind him. The Jade Rabbit lifted its eyelids slightly and spoke softly, "I come on behalf of the Queen Mother to propose."
A Xiao's expression remained unchanged as she ignored the tight embrace from Erlang Shen and said with a twitch of her lips, "Can I refuse?"
As soon as she finished speaking, Erlang Shen's eyes lit up, eager to say something, but was silenced by the Jade Rabbit's firm reply: "No."
Yue Lao stepped forward with a smile to mediate the situation. "The Jade Rabbit is your destined partner; it's a match made in heaven."
"I've checked the marriage registry; your so-called match made in heaven is nonsense!" Although the Jade Rabbit was handsome, its cold demeanor always gave her an overwhelming sense of pressure. She would rather marry Erlang Shen, the fool, than be paired with it.
Erlang Shen muttered quietly, "Once I turn into a rabbit, A Xiao and I will be a perfect match."
A Xiao promptly punched him in the stomach, signaling him to stop talking nonsense. The Jade Rabbit looked at Erlang Shen's pitiful expression and couldn't help but smile slightly. "Then I'll wait for you to turn into a rabbit."
"Erlang Shen is a great traitor!" A Xiao glared at Erlang Shen, who had become overly excited after sending Yue Lao and the Jade Rabbit away. With a huff, she tossed a large piece of meat into the pot.
She had thought that at least Erlang Shen would be on her side, but unexpectedly, with the Jade Rabbit's remark, "I believe he will turn into a rabbit," he discarded his armor and happily agreed to the marriage. Reflecting on this, her expression darkened further. How could he have previously insisted that he liked her and refused to let her marry the Jade Rabbit, only to be swayed by a single comment from her?
The discomfort in her heart grew stronger.
At that moment, Erlang Shen was completely oblivious to the low pressure surrounding A Xiao. He cheerfully approached her, "A Xiao, are you ready?"
"Hmph!" A Xiao scooped the stir-fried carrots and meat from the pan and forcefully placed it in front of Erlang Shen. "Eat it all!"
Erlang Shen instantly made a bitter face. "So much meat..."
A Xiao tugged at the corner of her mouth and retorted, "I’ve eaten so many carrots with you for so long. What’s wrong with you eating some meat before I get married?"
The more she thought about it, the more she felt like a fool. How could she, someone who couldn't live without meat, have indulged this idiot by eating vegetarian for decades? What a loss.
Mentioning marriage brought a smile back to Erlang Shen's face. "After you get married, I'll eat meat with you every day."
A Xiao shot him a sideways glance. "Sure, tomorrow I’ll just put away all the carrots."
His smile froze as he leaned closer with a pleading expression. "How about three parts meat and seven parts carrots?"
A Xiao remained silent, crossing her arms and raising an eyebrow at him.
"Then... how about four parts carrots and six parts meat?" Erlang Shen asked tentatively.
"Is this your sincerity?" A Xiao scoffed.
Erlang Shen closed his eyes, as if he had made a great decision. "Alright, I won't eat carrots anymore!" He paused, tugging at A Xiao's sleeve as if afraid she might get angry. "How about just a little carrot pastry after each meal?"
"You fool!" A Xiao couldn't help but laugh, the discomfort she felt earlier dissipating completely. She glanced at the red thread on her right wrist and suddenly declared, "Fool, I want to escape from my marriage!"
Before Erlang Shen could react, she swiftly pulled out another red thread from her bosom and tied it around Erlang Shen's left wrist, grinning mischievously. "In light of your sincerity, I've decided to appoint you as my lover."
After dragging Erlang Shen into her scheme, A Xiao resolved not to sit idly by any longer. She requested permission from the Jade Emperor to go after the Fox Demon that had been causing trouble in the human realm recently. To her surprise, the Jade Rabbit also expressed a desire to join them. She distinctly remembered feeling someone's gaze on her when she stepped forward to volunteer; turning around, she met the Jade Rabbit's approving look.
Could it be that the Jade Rabbit sensed her intention to escape from her marriage during this trip to the human realm?
