A Xiao returned to the Heavenly Realm, battered and bruised. Fortunately, the Fox Demon had been struck by heavenly lightning, scattering its soul, thus completing her mission. The Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother were overjoyed and immediately decided to marry the two great contributors—Xiao Tian Quan and the Jade Rabbit.
After lying in bed for several days and taking plenty of elixirs, A Xiao quickly regained her vitality. As soon as she got out of bed, she was anxious to find Erlang Shen to discuss strategies, only to be informed that he had blocked the heavenly lightning for her and was still in a coma.
Looking at Erlang Shen, who used to be so lively and always clung to her, now lying quietly on the couch, A Xiao felt a whirlwind of emotions. She was about to marry someone she didn’t love while the one she cared for lay gravely injured and unconscious. It felt as if a long-buried landmine in her heart had suddenly exploded, shattering her world into pieces.
When she had suddenly found herself in the role of Xiao Tian Quan, she had gone through a long period of gloom. If it hadn’t been for Erlang Shen accompanying her with his playful banter and allowing her to bully him without a care in the world, she might not have survived in this strange celestial realm. Now, she was thriving like a fish in water.
Ultimately, Erlang Shen was not only her nominal master but also the umbrella that provided her stability in the Heavenly Realm. Although this umbrella seemed unreliable, she wondered if it was perhaps a defective product.
“A Xiao.” A familiar voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts. She bit her lip and after a moment of silence said slowly, “Why isn’t it you?”
The Jade Rabbit was taken aback.
A Xiao turned to glare at him. “Don’t you like me? Didn’t you want to marry me? Why wasn’t it you who blocked the heavenly lightning? Why is it not you lying in bed?”
The Jade Rabbit blinked and after a long pause replied softly, “A Xiao, I do like you! And he did block the heavenly lightning for you…”
She scoffed and firmly grasped Erlang Shen’s hand in front of the Jade Rabbit. “It’s him I like.”
“Then…” The Jade Rabbit acted unusually shy and hesitated. “If he were to change into his original form, would you still like him?”
Only then did A Xiao realize something was off about the Jade Rabbit today. She scrutinized him curiously for a moment before her gaze suddenly fixed on his exposed wrist. Instinctively, she turned back and pulled Erlang Shen’s left wrist. The red thread was gone. No, more accurately, it had moved to the Jade Rabbit’s hand.
She suddenly recalled the words of Yue Lao: “You and the Jade Rabbit are destined to be together, a match made in heaven!”
The figure of the Queen Mother popped up again, looking down at A Xiao. “Remember, do not harbor any thoughts about Erlang Shen. The celestial beasts are different; there will be no good outcome for you.”
“No good outcome…” A Xiao felt darkness closing in. In that moment before she fainted, she mustered all her strength to deliver a chop to the Jade Rabbit's neck, finally satisfied as she lost consciousness. If she couldn’t find peace, neither would the Jade Rabbit.
Since that day, A Xiao found herself increasingly irritated by the sight of the Jade Rabbit. Damn that Jade Rabbit! Just because it was pretending to be cute like Erlang Shen didn’t mean she would like it! As she huffed and puffed while preparing the carrots, she muttered to herself, “Bao Sheng Da Di said Erlang Shen will awaken today. Considering he shielded her from the heavenly thunder, she decided to prepare a grand carrot feast to reward him and, in the process, find a way to deal with that nuisance of a Jade Rabbit.” That nuisance approached without a hint of self-awareness, eyes shining as it looked at A Xiao. “Are these all for me?”
A Xiao rolled her eyes. “Are you dreaming?”
Taking advantage of A Xiao’s distraction, the Jade Rabbit quickly snatched a piece and stuffed it into its mouth. “In this heavenly realm, I’m the only one who loves carrots. If I can’t eat them, who else will?”
A Xiao paused her movements, staring suspiciously at the Jade Rabbit for a while. “I remember last time when I brought you carrots, you said you didn’t like them.”
The Jade Rabbit scratched its head and grinned foolishly without saying a word.
A Xiao set down her things, crossed her arms, and frowned. “Could you please stop imitating him?” Watching the once icy and expressionless Jade Rabbit now displaying this unique silly grin of Erlang Shen’s made her feel strange yet oddly harmonious. But where did that sense of harmony come from?
Before A Xiao could figure it out, the Queen Mother suddenly sent someone with a message, instructing her and Erlang Shen to hurry to the Temple of the Heavenly Queen.
“But he hasn’t awakened yet!”
“I know.” The two voices sounded almost simultaneously. A Xiao turned around to see that familiar carefree face now serious and expressionless. She was struck by a sudden sense of nostalgia as if everything had changed. She thought to herself that she must have been struck by lightning; otherwise, how could she feel such an artsy sense of melancholy?
