In the dead of night, the moonlight was obscured by drifting clouds, and only a few dim yellow lamps illuminated the Wang Family Courtyard. Shen Tong hid behind the screen in Wang Yaoqin's room, examining the embroidered shoes placed on the table in the faint moonlight.
"I can't shake the feeling that something's off," Shen Tong whispered suddenly. "Why would the murderer send the shoes in advance as a warning? Isn't that just asking for trouble?"
Lin Mingchang had already considered this question. "Murderers often think in extreme ways. Besides killing their victims, they want them to feel fear before they die—"
"Shh!" Ruan Xiaoshuang suddenly gestured for silence, her ears sharp; she seemed to have caught a hint of an unusual sound.
The three of them immediately held their breath, the room silent except for the faint crackle of the oil lamp wick burning. Just as Lin Mingchang was about to speak, a very soft sound came from the courtyard, like something brushing past the treetops.
Then they heard a police officer lying in ambush in the courtyard let out a brief, startled gasp.
"They're here!" Lin Mingchang quickly drew his handgun, signaling Shen Tong and Ruan Xiaoshuang to get ready.
The three of them silently dispersed: Lin Mingchang positioned himself by Wang Yaoqin's door, Shen Tong hid behind the curtain in the corner of the bed, and Ruan Xiaoshuang crouched beside the screen with her camera at the ready.
At that moment, a shadow darted into the backyard like a wraith, moving with astonishing lightness. The shadow paused for a moment in the courtyard, seemingly assessing its surroundings before heading straight for Wang Yaoqin's bedroom.
As the shadow approached Wang Yaoqin's door, Lin Mingchang suddenly leaped out, aiming his gun at the intruder. "Don't move! Police!"
The shadow clearly hadn’t anticipated an ambush but reacted swiftly, dodging Lin Mingchang's gunpoint with a quick shift of its body. Lin Mingchang swung his gun to strike but was deftly evaded as the figure slipped into the room like a fish escaping a net!
At that moment, Ruan Xiaoshuang seized her chance and pressed the camera shutter; the flash instantly illuminated the room!
In that brief burst of light, she clearly saw what the shadow looked like—a figure dressed in black, tall and slender, evidently a young woman!
Momentarily blinded by the flash, the shadow hesitated just long enough for Lin Mingchang to seize his opportunity. He lunged at her, and they began to grapple in the darkness!
Seeing that things were turning against her, the shadow suddenly kicked over an oil lamp amidst the chaos and tossed out a lit firecracker, causing flames to erupt everywhere!
Taking advantage of this brief confusion, she quickly leaped out of the window while pulling something from her pocket—throwing it toward Wang Yaoqin's bed.
Shen Tong reacted quickly, whipping out a bed curtain to block whatever it was that had been thrown!
Lin Mingchang pursued relentlessly but was struck in the chest by a palm as she leaped through the window, staggering back several steps and nearly losing his balance.
The shadow seized the opportunity to leap into the night, disappearing from sight. Lin Mingchang wanted to pursue further, but Shen Tong grabbed him, saying, "Don't chase after them! There’s more than one killer; be careful of a diversion!"
At that moment, the police officers stationed outside rushed in to help extinguish the fire.
After confirming that Miss Wang was unharmed but shaken, Lin Mingchang gasped for breath and asked the Little Officer, who was busy putting out the flames, "Are the brothers outside okay?"
The Little Officer stood at attention and replied, "Report Officer Lin, only one brother sustained minor injuries; everyone else is fine!"
Lin Mingchang sighed in relief and turned to see Shen Tong and Ruan Xiaoshuang lighting another lamp while examining something in their hands. It was the object thrown at Miss Wang by the assailant—a slender needle coated with poison!
Shen Tong gently held the needle with a handkerchief and said softly, "This needle not only carries Yuan Qi and murderous intent but also a strong emotion."
Ruan Xiaoshuang scrutinized the needle under the light and noticed a small mark at its tail. She took out her camera and zoomed in for a closer look, revealing a line of tiny text: "Yongshun Embroidery Studio."
"Yongshun Embroidery Studio?" Lin Mingchang looked puzzled at Shen Tong.
Shen Tong shook his head, indicating that he had never heard of it either. Just then, Miss Wang, cradled in her mother's arms, suddenly interjected, "Yongshun Embroidery Studio? I've heard of it; it's a high-end tailor shop that just opened recently in the city center. The owners are a mother-daughter duo with exceptional skills. Many of my friends have visited."
"Hmph, the fox has finally revealed its tail!" Lin Mingchang raised an eyebrow. "Let's pay a visit to Yongshun Embroidery Studio right now and let the owner identify this needle."
