"Not only that," I pulled out a photo of Lin Xiaoyu's Pink Hairpin and slowly placed it before him. "I also found this."
Chen Guoping's face had completely drained of color. His lips trembled, but he couldn't utter a single sound, his whole body shaking like a leaf.
After a moment of silence, Chen Guoping's facade completely crumbled. He began to wail, tears and snot streaming down his grotesque face. "I was wrong! Judge Zhang, I truly realize my mistakes! It was those girls... they seduced me, and I just couldn't control myself... Right! Lin Xiaoyu! Lin Xiaoyu too! She seduced me first, then threatened me! Blackmailed me! I... I acted on impulse..."
Seeing that I remained unmoved, he suddenly changed his tone. "Judge Zhang, you and my father are old acquaintances. Please let me go! I'll pay any amount you want! My father still has some influence; he can arrange jobs for your children—just name your demands! I'm begging you!"
I forced myself to stand straight, took a deep breath, and spoke in a solemn tone:
"The following is the final judgment in this case. After thorough examination, it has been established that Defendant Chen Guoping has committed multiple counts of rape and molestation against underage girls since 2004. In an attempt to silence the victim Lin Xiaoyu from reporting the crimes, he brutally murdered her. Chen Guoping and his father Chen Chunlin have repeatedly threatened and intimidated witnesses to retract their testimonies. The evidence of multiple crimes is irrefutable, warranting cumulative penalties. Therefore, I hereby sentence Defendant Chen Guoping... to death! Presiding Judge, Zhang Yaqin."
With that, I turned off the recording device beside me and walked out of the garage without looking back at the impotent howls of Chen Guoping.
Time seemed to freeze in the interrogation room at the police station; I could hardly feel its passage, only waves of dizziness crashing over me, making it increasingly difficult to breathe.
Finally, the door to the interrogation room swung open, and Li Mingcheng entered with his team.
Their faces were etched with fatigue, anger, and shock as they silently took their seats across from me. I knew they must have found that horrifying basement.
The silence lingered for a long time; it seemed no one wanted to break the heavy atmosphere. At last, Li Mingcheng spoke up with red-rimmed eyes:
"Judge Zhang, we have verified the evidence you provided." He exhaled deeply and continued, "I assure you that we will thoroughly investigate this case and provide justice for the many victims and for you. So..."
The rain intensified outside as thunder rumbled. I fought through the pain in my body; I knew my time was running out.
The scene before me began to distort and blur; Li Mingcheng's face wavered in my vision until it became nothing but a hazy silhouette. Struggling to maintain my last shred of clarity, I slowly nodded and pointed with trembling fingers toward my bag.
"The hard drive in the bag... contains Chen Guoping's confession." I paused for breath, struggling to speak. "Although it may not hold legal weight... it can serve as an account for the victims..."
After a violent cough, my voice grew weaker. My consciousness was fading rapidly as I exerted every ounce of strength to convey the final crucial information: "Chen Guoping is still alive; he is currently in... Garage 201 at Xijiao Chengguang Logistics Park. The key is in..."
My last bit of energy drained away as my hand fell limply by my side. "It's in the bag..."
Before I could finish speaking, darkness enveloped me completely. In the final moment before losing consciousness, I heard Li Mingcheng's urgent shouts and hurried footsteps.
In a daze, I seemed to see myself from twenty years ago, dressed in judicial robes, walking slowly toward me.
The rain continued to fall as night deepened.
