After sharing their hearts, Chun Zhou lay on the intricately carved bed that Bai Li Yu had given her, excitedly pounding the bed frame.
Even though she was having fun until midnight, sleep eluded her; staying up late always made her brain feel sluggish.
Rolling out of bed while hugging a pillow, Chun Zhou suddenly felt a piece of paper beneath her.
With the moonlight as her guide, she read: "Come to my study at the hour of the rat; there are important matters to discuss." Signed simply as "Bai Li."
What is my benefactor up to?
Chun Zhou wondered, but then thought from another angle—was it time for her to lay everything on the table with him? Yes, she should explain everything to Bai Li Yu and from then on be together without any reservations...
Moreover, Chun Zhou suddenly broke into a silly grin. Perhaps Bai Li Yu wanted to take this opportunity to formally discuss their future together. If that were the case, did it mean she would be considered part of the royal family?
When she returned to the modern world, she could tell everyone that she was related to the emperor and had a general as her boyfriend. And... hee hee hee~
With these thoughts in mind, Chun Zhou made up her mind to meet Bai Li Yu.
The garden was lush with flowers and trees, and the moon hid behind clouds, casting shadows along the path. Chun Zhou stealthily followed the way to Bai Li Yu's courtyard.
After passing through an archway, she arrived at his study. The guards in front of his courtyard stood like wooden statues upon seeing her, not making a sound.
"Did he give them a heads-up?" Chun Zhou muttered as she walked inside. Seeing that the lights in Bai Li Yu's study were on, she tiptoed down the corridor and approached his window. Just as she was about to push open the window to surprise him, she vaguely heard Qing Yu's voice.
Chun Zhou felt a pang of unease and pressed her ear against the wall.
"How is the morale of the troops?" It was Bai Li Yu's voice, sounding different from usual; it seemed this guy was quite manly behind closed doors and even cared about troop morale!
"Rest assured, Your Highness, everything is going smoothly. By the way, should we continue monitoring Yuanwai Shang?"
Qing Yu suddenly spoke, causing Chun Zhou to cover her mouth in surprise, her mind buzzing.
So he had been considering himself a prince in private... But what was the deal with monitoring Yuanwai Shang? Hadn't the old man already escaped? There hadn't been any wanted notices from the court, which suggested they were turning a blind eye to the corruption...
"Don't talk about these things in the manor! How could you forget?" A reproachful voice from the man interrupted her thoughts.
"Damn it, Qing Yu, it's just that I haven't seen any actions from you lately..."
"I have my own plans."
"Then how do you intend to deal with Shang Qingzheng?" At the mention of Shang Qingzheng, Chun Zhou's heart tightened, and she quickly held her breath. Wasn't Shang Qingzheng just her?
"...What does that have to do with her now? Qing Yu, you have overstepped your bounds." Bai Li Yu's tone was displeased, already hinting at his irritation.
"But Your Highness, don't forget! You carry the burden of..."
The room fell silent.
Chun Zhou wanted to inch closer, but suddenly she heard a thud. Turning around, she saw that the two guards at the door had collapsed simultaneously.
"Who!" Qing Yu called out from inside the room. This was bad! Frightened, Chun Zhou turned to flee but lost her footing and tumbled down the corridor.
"I'm done for..." Chun Zhou thought as she lay on the ground, just as she heard the sound of the door opening.
The courtyard was brightly lit, and Chun Zhou lay there looking unfortunate as soldiers surrounded her once again.
Bai Li Yu stood tall with his hands behind his back, watching her.
Ironically, before he could take off his glasses, Qing Yu stood beside him, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
Chun Zhou suddenly recalled the rule he had set for himself: "Beware of Qing Yu," and regretted it deeply.
"Chun Zhou, how dare you! You killed two of the general's guards and came to eavesdrop! Speak! Where did you come from, you spy?" As expected, Qing Yu questioned her sharply.
The two guards were dead? Please... She was as weak as a kitten; even knocking them unconscious would have been a problem. Only someone with a twisted mind would believe her words.
Chun Zhou ignored her and climbed to her feet, looking pitifully at Bai Li Yu. "Bai Li Yu, I came because I saw the note. When I entered, those two guards were standing there motionless; I didn't know anything at all."
Bai Li Yu showed no expression on his face and simply asked, "When did I give you a note? Did you hear nothing?"
Chun Zhou was taken aback; his expression was extremely serious.
"Look," Chun Zhou realized that things seemed to be getting serious and hurriedly pulled the note from her sleeve. "It's this one..."
"Hmph! This note could be forged with ease! General, for the sake of our great cause, we should execute the spy immediately!" Qing Yu snatched it away, coldly unfolding the note for Bai Li Yu to see.
He glanced at it, but his expression did not soften.
Chun Zhou's heart began to race; the note wasn't written by him—who could it be? Hearing them mention "dealing with Shang Qingzheng" indicated they might know her identity... Was Bai Li Yu really as he appeared in her daily observations? The thought sent a shiver down her spine.
