A woman in her forties was speaking, seated at a round table in the corner with several other ladies.
Xiaoshuang's heart stirred as she pretended to adjust her equipment, subtly moving closer.
"Oh my goodness, really? This is already the third one recently, right?" exclaimed another lady wearing pearl earrings, her voice filled with surprise.
"Isn't it? Just last week, we heard that the young master of the Tang family hanged himself, and not long ago, there was that person you all know about who jumped off the dock."
"Why are these people so hopeless?"
"I heard that these individuals might have had some issues to begin with." The woman in her forties pointed to her head, "They were already acting strange before their suicides. Ever since that concert ended, it’s as if they were possessed, wandering around in a daze."
"What concert?"
"You don’t know? Such a big deal? It was just some time ago..."
Concerts, wandering spirits, successive suicides... these clues formed a faint thread connecting them all.
Xiaoshuang quickly packed her camera, bid farewell to the hosts, and left the wedding scene.
When Lin Mingchang arrived at Shen Tong's home, it was nearing dusk.
Shen Tong was somewhat surprised to see him again. After their conversation at noon had not gone well, she thought Lin Mingchang wouldn’t come back for a while.
Feeling a bit awkward upon seeing Shen Tong, Lin Mingchang scratched his head and said hesitantly, "Um... there’s been a strange case of someone jumping off a building. I want to show you something."
Shen Tong stepped aside to let him in and turned to pour a cup of tea, handing it to Lin Mingchang. "What is it? Tell me."
Lin Mingchang took out the Paper Man from his pocket. "This afternoon, Finance Director Zhang Jingzhai committed suicide by jumping off a building. I found this in his study drawer. Also, he attended Mo Wen's concert."
Shen Tong straightened her back instantly as she took the Paper Man and examined it closely.
"This Paper Man has very special paper." Shen Tong's fingertips gently brushed over its surface. "The texture is tough and slightly yellowed; this is paper that has been soaked in mugwort water multiple times—high-quality funeral paper. It’s generally used for making offerings or drawing talismans."
Lin Mingchang frowned deeply. "Funeral paper? Why would it be in a living person's study?"
Shen Tong did not answer immediately because the aura on this Paper Man was even more peculiar than the paper itself. "This Paper Man has... a rare aura that is light purple and silk-like. We call it 'Controlling Qi.' This aura is very sinister; it usually only appears in sorcery. I heard my grandmother talk about it when I was young; this is my first time seeing real 'Controlling Qi.'"
"'Controlling Qi'?"
"It refers to an aura that can manipulate people," Shen Tong explained. "This aura has directionality; like threads, it can guide a person's actions. The runes on the Paper Man serve as anchor points, directing the 'Controlling Qi' towards specific individuals."
"Are you saying that someone used this Paper Man to control Director Zhang and forced him to commit suicide?" Lin Mingchang asked in disbelief.
Shen Tong hesitated for a moment. "It's very possible, but I've never seen this kind of Controlling Qi technique before. If this is related to Mo Wen, it might also involve some sort of hallucinogenic drug. How about we go to Zigui and let him take a look?"
When Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong arrived at Fang Zigui's clinic, it was already completely dark outside. The two entered without hesitation, greeting Xiao Gu, who was checking the accounts at the front desk, before heading straight to the back room.
"Zigui, hurry, come take a look at this!" Lin Mingchang's voice preceded him as he passed through the curtain.
