After an investigation, Fu Yuan Zhai has a very good reputation in Spring City. The current owner, Hong Baoshan, is the fourth-generation heir and has been in charge for fifteen years. He is usually low-key and holds considerable prestige within the industry.
Furthermore, through interviews with the victims' families, it was confirmed that none of the three deceased knew Hong Baoshan or had ever visited Fu Yuan Zhai. So what could possibly connect them to Fu Yuan Zhai?
Lin Mingchang paced back and forth in his office, his head throbbing with confusion. Just then, two officers responsible for investigating the connections of the deceased returned, exclaiming, "Brother Lin! We have found something!"
After a thorough investigation into the friends, emotional relationships, business dealings, and financial situations of the three victims, the officers discovered that while the three appeared unrelated on the surface, they were all directly connected to a piece of land in the northern part of Spring City.
Lin Mingchang took the investigation report, which included a map of the northern area highlighting a piece of approximately one hundred acres of wasteland. This land originally belonged to several landlords, but in recent years, there had been constant disputes over its development, preventing any progress.
According to the investigation, among the three victims, the Tang Family Young Master was one of the largest investors in this land, ambitiously planning to build a new commercial street there; Chen Yuanfu, as the largest landlord in northern Spring City, owned most of the property rights to this land; and Zhang Jingzhai, as Finance Director Zhang, was responsible for handling the relevant approval procedures for this land.
On the surface, these deaths were ruled as suicides. However, if one connects the Paper Man with the land transaction, an unsettling conclusion emerges—these three deaths point to a hidden orchestrator lurking in the shadows, likely linked to Gui Xu Society.
"What is so special about this land that warrants Gui Xu Society resorting to such sinister means to eliminate these high-ranking officials?" It seems they must start with Fu Yuan Zhai and take some precautionary measures.
Shen Tong and Lin Mingchang stood in front of Fu Yuan Zhai. Today their roles were that of a recently bereaved family’s small steward and a Wang Qi Master invited specifically to assist with funeral arrangements and ward off bad luck.
For this covert visit, Lin Mingchang changed his usual sharp demeanor and donned an elegant dark blue long robe. The bell jingled as Shen Tong pushed open the door to Fu Yuan Zhai. Inside, various paper craft items adorned the walls; a unique scent of paper ink mingled with a faint aroma of incense filled the air.
"What can I help you gentlemen with?" A middle-aged man stepped out from behind a curtain. He appeared to be in his forties with a square face.
"Is this shopkeeper's establishment?" Lin Mingchang stepped forward, adopting an air befitting a wealthy steward. "My surname is Lin; our master has recently passed away and requires some sacrificial items. I have heard that Fu Yuan Zhai is a century-old old brand and came here to make purchases."
Hong Baoshan's gaze drifted past Lin Mingchang to Shen Tong and her black eye patch over her right eye. For just a moment, an unusual expression crossed his face. "This lady... must be Miss Shen from the Wang Qi family in Spring City? Your grandmother was quite renowned here; it’s a pleasure to meet you today."
Shen Tong was slightly taken aback but nodded without saying much.
"What does your steward require? Please feel free to ask; Fu Yuan Zhai will certainly do its utmost," Hong Baoshan said respectfully as he turned toward Lin Mingchang.
"We need some high-quality yellow paper and joss money," Shen Tong interjected. "Master Lin was a devout Buddhist during his lifetime and valued 'quality.' I want to select the best for him."
"Miss Shen certainly knows her stuff," Hong Baoshan said with approval as he turned to lead them. "Please follow me this way to choose."
