After sending Shen Tong home, Lin Mingchang drove back to the Police Station alone.
He returned to his office, locked the door behind him, and took out three thick Case Files from his drawer. These were the records of business dealings and financial transactions of the three deceased individuals that he had previously arranged for trusted officers to investigate.
Lin Mingchang picked up the now cold tea and drank it in one gulp before spreading out the dense accounts and documents before him.
Three hours passed, and he had gone through the materials several times, yet he still found no new discoveries. He rubbed his temples and let out a long sigh. "It's strange; these three individuals include officials, businessmen, and landowners. Although they are all connected to that piece of land in the north of the city, it seems they had no interactions with each other..."
Stretching his back, Lin Mingchang prepared to take one last look. Just then, he suddenly spotted a name—Hongtu Industrial.
"Hongtu Industrial? Hongtu Industrial... I feel like I've seen this name somewhere else..." Lin Mingchang abruptly stood up and quickly flipped through the other files.
"Got it!" He pointed emphatically at a document. The first two deceased individuals, Tang Family Young Master and Chen Yuanfu, had both had economic dealings with Hongtu Industrial.
"What exactly is Hongtu Industrial?"
Lin Mingchang immediately arranged for Xiao Zhou and another reliable officer to investigate Hongtu Industrial in detail. "Remember to keep a low profile; just gather information without alarming anyone. This matter is between the three of us; do not inform anyone else, including our colleagues at the department."
The next day, after reviewing the investigation report on Hongtu Industrial, Lin Mingchang tapped his fingers on the desk and muttered to himself, "Ha... interesting..."
The investigation revealed that Hongtu Industrial was ostensibly a trading company founded by several prominent merchants from Spring City, dealing in real estate, silk, and medicinal materials among other fields.
However, after further investigation, Xiao Zhou discovered that the actual major investor behind this company was Mo Wen—the very Mo Wen who was already imprisoned!
Yet despite Mo Wen's incarceration, Hongtu Industrial continued to operate normally and was even quite active.
What surprised Lin Mingchang even more was an important piece of information regarding Hongtu Industrial's recent business activities—they were actively applying to acquire that piece of land in the north of the city.
Everything started to connect!
This meant that Gui Xu Society was attempting to acquire that land through Hongtu Industrial, and Fu Yuan Zhai was likely also a property of Gui Xu Society. The Paper Man they produced was used to control those who obstructed their plans, forcing them to commit suicide and clearing obstacles for the land acquisition.
This speculation sent chills down Lin Mingchang's spine, but the question remained: why was Gui Xu Society so fixated on that piece of land? Furthermore, after Mo Wen's imprisonment, who was actually controlling Hongtu Industrial?
Returning to his desk, Lin Mingchang organized the documents and packed them into a brown leather bag to carry with him.
He recalled the previous investigations that had been thwarted multiple times and the vague attitude from superiors regarding the investigation into Gui Xu Society. Since it involved Gui Xu Society, he decided not to alert anyone for now and would refrain from reporting it upward; instead, he would find a way to delve deeper into the investigation himself.
The reach of the Gui Xu Society had extended too far, and Lin Mingchang was unaware of how many pairs of eyes were watching him within the Police Station. A slight misstep could not only jeopardize the case but also put the safety of the four of them at risk. He locked his office, chose not to go home, and headed directly to Xiaoshuang's rented room.
