Shen Tong covered her mouth and nose with a special gauze, her eyes slightly squinting as she quickly scanned the room. "Where is Shopkeeper Hong?"
The four people who had been captured exchanged glances, but no one answered.
The three patrol officers who had burst in through the front door found nothing either; the shop had already been cleared out. Captain Li Zheng tied the four individuals to a tree in the backyard and ordered the officers to search the other rooms carefully, but there was no sign of Hong Baoshan anywhere.
Fang Zigui cautiously collected some samples of the medicinal liquid from a barrel and placed them into small bottles. His research on the antidote needed to keep pace with the Gui Xu Society's progress.
Shen Tong was sensitive to her surroundings, and despite wearing Fang Zigui's special gauze, she quickly began to feel dizzy. She suppressed her discomfort and observed the small room carefully, soon noticing a subtle anomaly in the airflow. In the corner of the room stood a large cabinet against the wall, from which a faint breath seeped through the gap between it and the wall.
"Captain Li Zheng, there's something wrong here," Shen Tong immediately gestured.
After several patrol officers worked together to move the cabinet, they discovered a dark entrance behind it, revealing a deep passageway that extended downward.
In the dim light, they could barely make out stone steps leading into the darkness, accompanied by a musty smell of dampness and age-old dust. Shen Tong picked up an oil lamp from the table and was about to descend into the passage when Zigui grabbed her arm.
"No! It's too dangerous! I promised Lin Mingchang I wouldn't let you take risks!"
Captain Li Zheng took the oil lamp from Shen Tong's hand. "Hold on, I'll go down first to take a look."
However, he only ventured a short distance before returning. "About five meters ahead, the passage has been blocked by rubble. From the signs, it looks like it was sealed recently."
Shen Tong nodded. "Hong Baoshan must have escaped through here beforehand and then sealed off his escape route."
At this point, Fang Zigui's special gauze had begun to lose its effectiveness; under the influence of the medication, everyone started feeling dizzy as well. They quickly decided to leave the small room.
Just then, Lin Mingchang's team arrived in a hurry. He first glanced at Shen Tong to confirm that no one was injured before asking, "What’s going on?"
Captain Li Zheng and Lin Mingchang separated the captured individuals for questioning on-site, but the results were disappointing: these people were merely ordinary workers temporarily hired by Hong Baoshan. They had received a substantial amount of money and only knew their task was to destroy the medicinal liquid and Paper Man before burning down the shop. They had no idea about the specific reasons behind it.
The Double-Line Raid on Hongtu Industrial and Fu Yuan Zhai was an operation meticulously planned by Lin Mingchang, but both targets had successfully evaded capture.
Both sides had clearly received the news in advance and had evacuated early, destroying most of the evidence. However, the evidence at Fu Yuan Zhai was destroyed a bit later, which allowed this shop and a small amount of medicinal liquid to remain.
Today, everyone involved in the Double-Line Raid was someone Lin Mingchang truly trusted, which made him even more perplexed. "How did the news leak?"
The scene fell into silence, and no one could answer that question. The night was deep, and everyone was exhausted.
Lin Mingchang thanked Captain Li Zheng for his strong support and asked him to take the workers away first. They were unaware of the details of the case, so after registering them, they could be released.
After Captain Li Zheng left with his team, Lin Mingchang, Shen Tong, Xiaoshuang, and Fang Zigui returned to Shen Tong's small courtyard. No one spoke along the way; they had worked hard all night for nothing, leaving everyone feeling somewhat disheartened. That night, the four of them made do and rested for a few hours at Shen Tong's home.
