Early the next morning, before she had time for breakfast, Xiaoshuang hurried out without saying where she was going. Lin Mingchang quickly tidied up; he needed to make a trip to the Police Station.
Before leaving, he instructed Fang Zigui, "Brother Zigui, you stay here with Shen Tong for now. The four of us have repeatedly obstructed the Gui Xu Society's plans, and they must have already set their sights on us. We need to be vigilant; they might resort to desperate measures and retaliate."
Shen Tong and Fang Zigui waited until the afternoon but did not see Xiaoshuang return. Instead, Lin Mingchang came back first. He took off his police uniform jacket and slammed a document down on the table.
This morning, he had submitted a request to raid the ancient tomb in the northern part of the city at the Police Station, but he had just received a reply—it was rejected. The reason given was insufficient evidence to prove any connection between the Gui Xu Society and the tomb raiding activities.
"Hmph..." He let out a cold laugh in frustration. "It seems the Gui Xu Society's influence within the Police Station is deeper than I imagined."
"Ridiculous!" Fang Zigui, usually composed, couldn't help but express his indignation. "The clear connections between the three deceased, along with Fu Yuan Zhai's Paper Man and the medicinal liquid—aren't these enough?"
Just then, Xiaoshuang finally returned, and all three of them breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing her safe and sound. Xiaoshuang was sweating profusely and gasping for breath; after downing a cup of tea, she excitedly said, "I have a new discovery! The strange emblem on that piece of paper Brother Lin and I found at Hongtu Industrial—I know what it is now!"
"What is it?" Lin Mingchang exclaimed as he stood up.
Xiaoshuang explained, "This morning I copied the emblem design and went to the newspaper office to ask some veteran reporters about it. To my surprise, someone recognized it—it's an emblem of a British archaeological institution."
"British?" Shen Tong leaned back in her chair as she finally understood the connections in this matter. "So that's it! The Gui Xu Society colluded with foreigners, using archaeology as a cover for tomb raiding. The foreigners provide funding while the Gui Xu Society supplies the means; they cooperate in looting tombs and then split the spoils afterward."
After this revelation, all four fell into silence. They had thought of the Gui Xu Society's conspiracy but had not anticipated that foreigners were involved as well. For their own selfish interests, the Gui Xu Society was willing to sell national treasures! What was the difference from treason?
The usually calm Shen Tong could no longer sit still; she walked over to the wall and pointed at the calendar—March Fifteenth. "This is the date written on the piece of paper found by Lin Mingchang and Xiaoshuang. We can only speculate that the Gui Xu Society plans to act the day after tomorrow."
Lin Mingchang walked over, tore off the page marked "March Fifteenth," and slapped it down on the table. "Tonight, we act! We must enter the tomb before them and take the initiative. We cannot allow the Gui Xu Society and foreigners to succeed!"
After deciding to take action that night, Lin Mingchang went out to gather his team—his trusted brothers from the Police Station along with Li Zheng's North City Patrol would be his first choice.
As the night deepened, Lin Mingchang had been gone for over four hours, leaving Shen Tong, Xiaoshuang, and Zigui feeling increasingly restless.
"Has Brother Lin not returned yet?" Xiaoshuang asked for what felt like the umpteenth time, pushing open the courtyard door to look outside.
Fang Zigui glanced up at the clock. "Why hasn't he come back? He's been gone for so long."
Although Shen Tong felt a surge of anxiety within, he remained silently seated on the stone bench in the courtyard, quietly praying that nothing had gone awry.
Just as they neared midnight, a gentle knock finally echoed at the courtyard door, prompting all three to rise together.
