"Who is it?" A man's voice came from the courtyard.
The gate creaked open, revealing a clearly just-awoken man standing at the entrance.
His hair was disheveled, stubble covered his face, and he squinted as he sized up Lin Mingchang, wearing an expression of impatience.
After a moment, his half-closed eyes suddenly widened. "Oh my gosh! Lin Mingchang! It's you!"
He rushed over and hugged Lin Mingchang tightly, patting his back a few times with enthusiasm.
"When did you come back? Why didn't you give me a heads-up? I could have picked you up! Come on! Get inside!"
Only then did Chen Jiu'an notice Shen Tong standing behind Lin Mingchang.
She wore a blue cotton qipao and a black veil, which covered most of her right face, but it was still possible to see that her right eye was covered by a black eye patch.
Despite this, Chen Jiu'an could tell that the woman was beautiful and had a very unique aura about her.
Chen Jiu'an blurted out, "Lin Mingchang? Is this... your sister-in-law? Why didn't you introduce us?"
Lin Mingchang's face instantly turned red. He quickly turned to glance at Shen Tong, fearing she might be angered by Chen Jiu'an's clumsiness.
"No! That's not it! This is Shen Tong, my friend. She just happened to come to Yangzhou with me for some reasons."
Chen Jiu'an looked at the blushing Lin Mingchang and then at Shen Tong, who had a faint blush on her face and nodded slightly in greeting. He immediately understood.
It seemed that Shen Tong wasn't his sister-in-law yet, but it was likely to happen soon.
Chen Jiu'an flashed a smile at Shen Tong. "Hi there! Sorry for being so forward; please don’t mind me, Miss Shen! Lin Mingchang's friends are my friends too—please come in!"
Chen Jiu'an invited the two to sit for a while and have some tea to rest while he quickly tidied up.
He wanted to be a good host and treat Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong to a nice meal.
As the three walked toward Chen Jiu'an's car parked at the end of the alley, Lin Mingchang couldn't help but feel slightly surprised.
Not many people could afford cars these days; he had only driven police vehicles back in Spring City. It seemed that Chen Jiu'an was doing quite well for himself!
Chen Jiu'an took Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong to an old brand restaurant by the canal. As soon as they entered, a waiter approached them eagerly.
"Ah, Master Jiu, you're here! I'll arrange a riverside private room for you right away; please follow me!"
It was clear that Chen Jiu'an was a regular here. As he introduced the restaurant's authentic Yangzhou flavors to his guests, he told the waiter, "Just like always, bring me all your signature dishes!"
The waiter attentively responded, arranging for the three to sit down and bringing over a pot of tea before hurriedly going off to fetch the food.
Once seated, Chen Jiu'an poured tea for Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong. The fragrant aroma wafted through the air, clearly indicating it was high-quality fresh tea.
Chen Jiu'an smiled and said, "Honestly, Lin Mingchang, I never expected you to return to Yangzhou. Back in the day, you were determined to make a name for yourself at the Spring City Police Station!"
Lin Mingchang shook his head with a wry smile. "Plans can't keep up with changes. I've already resigned from the Police Station; now I'm just an unemployed drifter."
Chen Jiu'an exaggeratedly widened his eyes. "You? Not being a police officer anymore? So... do you have any plans now that you're back?"
"I'm not here for long," Lin Mingchang chuckled. "We're just passing through. I specifically stopped here for a couple of days to see you, but I'll have to leave soon. By the way, I see you're doing quite well in Yangzhou! What kind of work are you doing?"
Chen Jiu'an laughed heartily. "What do you mean 'doing well'? I'm just a small private detective, barely making ends meet."
