Lin Mingchang exchanged a glance with Captain Lu. "Madam Yang, has the professor mentioned anything about Mr. Zhou Zijun and Professor Wang Licheng in the past couple of days?"
"He has mentioned it; this matter has made Old Yang very upset," Madam Yang sighed. "The three of them have known each other for many years and have researched Chu Jian together. Ever since hearing about the passing of the two, Old Yang hasn't been able to sleep well these past few days."
Shen Tong silently looked towards the room, noticing that there were no signs of Yuan Qi or any ominous energy inside.
After bidding farewell to Madam Yang, the three headed directly to the Public Science Laboratory.
Captain Lu entered the reception room on the right side of the entrance. The elderly man at the door was still reading a newspaper. When he saw the three approaching, he set down his paper and adjusted his reading glasses.
"Sir, I’m a police officer," Captain Lu said as he took out his identification. "I came by yesterday; I wonder if you remember? I’d like to ask if Professor Yang Guangming has come to the Experimental Institute today."
The old man recognized Captain Lu and shook his head. "Professor Yang hasn’t been here these past few days. I heard he took leave due to health issues."
"But Madam Yang said that Professor Yang came to the Experimental Institute this morning," Lin Mingchang pressed.
"That’s strange," the old man frowned. "I’ve been sitting in this reception room since seven-thirty this morning, and I’ve seen everyone who came in and out clearly. With Professor Yang being so tall, there’s no way I could have missed him."
Just then, Director Xu walked out from inside the building and immediately spotted Captain Lu, Lin Mingchang, and Shen Tong.
"Captain Lu? Why are you all here again? Is there something else?"
Captain Lu stepped forward a couple of paces. "Director Xu, it’s nothing much; we just wanted to have a word with Professor Yang Guangming."
Director Xu's expression stiffened slightly. "Professor Yang hasn’t been here recently. With two scholars facing unfortunate circumstances, we’ve temporarily halted the Chu Jian research project at our institute."
Lin Mingchang noticed Director Xu's flickering gaze and stepped forward to ask, "Then, Director, could we take a look at their Chu Jian research room?"
"I'm afraid that’s not possible," Director Xu replied curtly. "Yesterday we made an exception for you all to visit the Chu Jian restoration workshop. The research materials belonging to these three professors are classified documents related to national cultural heritage protection; it’s simply not convenient to disclose them to outsiders. I hope you understand."
At that moment, Shen Tong suddenly changed the subject and asked, "Excuse me, Director Xu, is Mr. Xu Guangyao in the museum today?"
Director Xu was taken aback, clearly not expecting Shen Tong to ask that question. "Xu Guangyao? He... he seems to have taken leave as well, saying he had matters at home. Why are you inquiring about him?"
"Oh, it’s nothing; I just thought he looked somewhat familiar and wanted to know if he knew an old acquaintance of mine," Lin Mingchang interjected smoothly.
Director Mo glanced at his watch and said expressionlessly, "If there’s nothing else, I have a meeting to attend. Please excuse me." With that, he hurried away.
As the three exited the Experimental Institute, raindrops began to fall from the sky.
Captain Lu sighed. "Professor Yang’s whereabouts are truly concerning. I wonder where he is now... Could he also have..."
Lin Mingchang felt that Professor Yang Guangming was likely in danger as well and reminded Captain Lu, "Captain Lu, if possible, try to dispatch some personnel to search for him; it would be best if we could find Professor Yang before another body appears."
In the evening, the lights of the Lao Guang Sheng Inn began to flicker on. Shen Tong was in Lin Mingchang's room, and the two were discussing the possibilities surrounding the case. Suddenly, a faint knocking sound came from outside the door.
