I don't know how long it has been, but the surroundings are eerily silent. I slowly step out from the fake mountain cave, feeling a chill run through my entire body.
The conversation between Consort Yan and Rao Yin is not entirely clear to me, but one thing I understand is that Rao Yin's previous closeness to me had ulterior motives.
And I, no, Lady Hu Third, am somehow connected to the death of the Eldest Prince.
It turns out Rao Yin thought I had lost my memory.
No wonder, on the first day he dragged me into the woods, I actually asked him who he was.
My suspicions that day on Lingyun Mountain were indeed true.
I should leave this place of turmoil as soon as possible.
Yet my mind is in chaos, and all I can think about is that night when he told me, "You are different."
At that moment, his eyes were so bright, and those words took root in my heart, now they gnaw at me painfully.
I rush back into the room, where the old nurse is trying to soothe Young Master. Ignoring her astonishment, I scoop Young Master into my arms. As soon as he settles against me, he bursts into giggles.
In this palace, he is perhaps the only one who won't scheme against me.
I lift my garment and let him lean against my chest. His little hands sway playfully. Just as I reach out to pinch his cheek, I suddenly notice his face turning blue. He starts coughing violently, white liquid spilling from his pale lips.
"Young Master..." My eyes widen in shock.
At that moment, a loud voice echoed from outside the door: "Consort Yan has arrived—"
I turned around in confusion, only to receive a sharp slap across my face, leaving a stinging pain.
Consort Yan glared at me, her eyes filled with a bloodthirsty rage. "You wretched slave! How dare you poison Young Master!"
...
I was thrown into the dungeon, accused of attempting to murder Young Master.
The Emperor, having finally fathered a son in his old age, would surely ensure that I would pay dearly for this.
Thinking of Consort Yan's heartbroken expression when she entered made me unable to suppress a cold laugh, shaking with mirth.
When she appeared so "coincidentally," I knew everything had been premeditated.
The contents of that porcelain vial must have been extremely toxic.
Did Consort Yan wish to kill me on her own accord, or was it Rao Yin's desire? I simply could not understand how a mother could bear to use her own child's life as a bargaining chip for something else.
And as for Rao Yin... what was the point of pondering over this now?
I gazed around the dark and damp cell, thinking, Hu Ru Fei, oh Hu Ru Fei, how unfortunate you are; dying once wasn't enough—you had to come with extra troubles.
At least the last time I died it was quick; this time, my heart felt as if it had been crushed, aching with every beat. Memories of my time spent with Rao Yin flooded my mind.
The moonlight streamed through the skylight, and suddenly I heard a "crack" behind me. I turned sharply to see Rao Yin, dressed in black.
“It’s you,” I gritted my teeth and raised my chin. “What’s the matter? Can’t you even wait a few hours? You want to kill me so soon?”
Rao Yin was taken aback and grabbed my hand. “Let’s go!”
“Where to?” Wasn’t he planning to execute me on the spot?
“Isn’t it obvious? We’re escaping!” Rao Yin shot me an irritated glance.
He pulled me along as we ran wildly, the prison guards sprawled on the ground outside the cage, until we finally reached the carriage.
Only then did he let out a sigh of relief and turned to look at me. “What were you saying earlier about being put to death?”
Having been imprisoned once, I knew there was no escaping this fate, so I simply snorted coldly. “I heard what you and Consort Yan said that day. You intended to kill me to silence me.”
Rao Yin stared at me, his gaze flickering with uncertainty. After a long pause, he let out a bitter laugh. “So that’s how it is.”
“Just tell me. After all, I’m already at your mercy; it’s better for me to understand my fate than to haunt you as a restless spirit after I’m dead.” I clenched my fists tightly, my knuckles turning white.
He furrowed his brow and sighed deeply after a moment. “Alright, I’ll tell you.”
