The last beam of sunlight suddenly pierced through the clouds, its brilliance stinging the eyes.
A woman in a bright yellow phoenix robe lunged forward, crashing into Consort Li.
The Rebels surged forward, their fists and feet striking fiercely. In just a few blows, they kicked the woman aside, only to see a Phoenix Hairpin lodged in Consort Li's throat. She coughed up blood, her eyes rolling back as she convulsed a couple of times before dying.
The Queen was struck in the chest by the Rebels, blood spilling from the corner of her mouth. Wiping it away with her sleeve, she coldly remarked, "Useless trash; it’s cleaner to be dead."
She had narrowly escaped the capital and rushed to Ying Tai, only to find it deserted. Upon returning to the capital, she learned that her maternal family had been slaughtered!
And three days later was the coronation ceremony for the Queen! Did you really think he liked you? Open your eyes and see who is sitting beside him now!
Several Rebels stepped forward, grabbing her by the hair and lifting her up. She raised her phoenix eyes defiantly and said, "I am the Queen of the Great Yan Dynasty! How dare you treat me this way?"
Perhaps her imposing presence intimidated them; the soldier loosened his grip and took a small step back. But feeling humiliated, he raised his hand and slapped her across the face.
Her teeth were knocked out, her cheek swollen, yet she stubbornly held her head high and said to Guan Shubai, "Guan Shubai, if you give him the military token, I will never forgive you even in death!"
Guan Shubai felt a surge of heat in her eyes as she turned to face the Queen. The Queen's gaze was so intense it felt like the scorching midday sun in July or August, burning into her.
She struggled to suppress the lump in her throat and replied solemnly, "Rest assured, I will not."
The Queen smiled brightly, glancing around at the many concubines in the hall. She said lightly, "After competing with you for all these years, it turns out I only find you somewhat pleasing. These cowardly individuals are simply disgusting."
She turned her head, sneering at Gu Jin'an, "Do you think you've won, Gu Jin'an?"
Gu Jin'an raised an eyebrow, about to speak, when he saw the Empress crash into the pillar behind her. In an instant, blood and flesh splattered everywhere, leaving a scene of chaos. Only her piercing voice echoed in the hall, filled with vengeful malice, "Gu Jin'an! You will surely die a terrible death!"
The night wind blew in, dispersing the stench of blood throughout the room. Gu Jin'an waved slightly, and someone stepped forward to restrain the palace maids.
Guan Shubai felt a chill that penetrated to her bones.
Standing amidst the bodies, Gu Jin'an smiled and said, "Shubai, do you love him so much? Are you not afraid of death?"
Guan Shubai's gaze was dark as she looked down at her shoes, blood creeping up from beneath her feet, hot and searing.
Gu Jin'an's voice turned cold, laced with a hint of malicious glee. "If you love him so much, are you sure he loves you back? How much of a ruler's affection is genuine, and how much is false?"
Guan Shubai lifted her head, her eyes gliding over his armored cloak, her expression icy. "In the end, it's the victor who prevails; words are meaningless. Gu Jin'an, today I have fallen into your hands. You may kill or torture me as you please. If you think you can take the Ying Tai military token from me, I advise you to give up that thought while you still can."
Gu Jin'an laughed heartily and pushed her to the ground, looking down at her coldly. "Fine, I won't kill you. I'll wait until I capture him and let you watch him meet his end."
He sheathed his sword and strode towards the Dark Palace Gate.
The night was as dark as ink; the towering palace had succumbed to flames. A sea of fire spread far and wide, like a monstrous beast emerging from the depths of the earth, rampaging through this night filled with phantoms.
Guan Shubai sat in a pool of blood as rebels approached to bind her. She turned her head to see someone dragging the Empress's leg, stumbling their way out.
The once most noble woman still opened her eyes wide, her head covered in blood, and dirty dust smeared across her hair, a dull gray, like the frost of the outer lands.
