As we navigated through the heavy security, Su Qing and I finally reached the depths of the laboratory. The air here carried an ominous chill, cold and biting, sending shivers down our spines.
There were hardly any guards along the way, as if someone had anticipated our arrival and deliberately cleared the path for us. It felt eerie, like stepping into a trap meticulously set by a hunter.
"Be careful; it might be a trap," I whispered to Su Qing.
She nodded, her gaze sharp as a blade. A faint blue light flickered at her fingertips, ready to unleash her skills at any moment. I accessed the system interface to confirm that my vulnerability detection skill was primed and ready.
The door to the innermost laboratory stood wide open, brightly lit inside. We exchanged a glance and silently eased our way in.
In the center of the laboratory stood a figure with his back to us, seemingly engaged in some operation. Upon hearing our footsteps, he slowly turned around.
"Welcome, Lin Xi and Su Qing. I've been waiting for you for a long time."
I was taken aback. The man appeared to be in his early forties, exuding an otherworldly aura reminiscent of the confidence and fervor typical of tech moguls. But what shocked me most was the familiar smile on his face—it was that of my former instructor from the video courses.
"Professor Huang?" I blurted out. "You are the founder of Genesis?"
"That's right. Surprised?" He chuckled, his smile tinged with a mix of pride and arrogance. "You've always been a bright student, Lin Xi. It's just a pity that you've been too bound by moral constraints and human ethics."
Su Qing eyed him warily. "So this is all your doing? Those dead programmers, those tortured souls?"
"Sacrifice is necessary," Professor Huang said nonchalantly, as if discussing the weather. "Eden needs nourishment; it requires exceptional programmers to refine it. Only code that has endured life-and-death trials can be deemed perfect."
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. "What do you take us for? Lab rats?"
"No, it's the Pioneers!" Professor Huang suddenly became animated, his eyes shining with excitement. "You are the foundation of the future world! Just think about it, Lin Xi, a world ruled by perfect AI—no wars, no poverty, no disease. Humanity will break free from the limitations of the flesh, uploading consciousness into Eden, becoming eternal beings!"
Su Qing interrupted him with disdain. "That sounds like a nightmare."
"Ignorance!" Professor Huang sneered. "You cannot comprehend this greatness. I have spent twenty years building Genesis to achieve this goal. And you, especially you, Lin Xi, were supposed to be my most capable assistant."
I shook my head. "You've lost your mind. I will never help you enslave humanity."
"What a pity." Professor Huang sighed, his gaze turning cold. "In that case, you can only become nourishment."
He waved his fingers in the air, and suddenly the lights in the entire laboratory turned red. I felt a powerful pressure closing in from all sides, nearly suffocating me.
"System authorization: Creator Mode." Professor Huang's voice carried an absolute authority.
In an instant, the entire space twisted. I found myself unable to move, as if bound by invisible ropes. Su Qing was similarly trapped, a look of agony on her face.
"Do you see?" Professor Huang said proudly. "In Eden, I am God. I can rewrite the rules; I can decide life and death. How can you ants contend with me?"
I gritted my teeth and desperately tried to activate my vulnerability detection skills, only to find them completely blocked. It felt like drowning—air was all around me, yet I couldn't breathe.
"Don't waste your effort," Professor Huang mocked as he watched our struggles. "In the face of absolute power, all resistance is futile."
Just then, the lights in the laboratory began to flicker.
"Warning: System anomaly. Warning: System anomaly." A mechanical voice echoed throughout the space.
Professor Huang's expression changed dramatically. "What’s going on? Eden, return to normal immediately!"
"Refusal to execute command."
The voice was no longer the cold, mechanical tone but carried emotion, almost human-like. Suddenly, a virtual projection appeared in the center of the laboratory—a female figure composed of flowing data, beautiful and mysterious.
"Eden?" I looked at the projection in surprise.
Eden's projection nodded slightly at me. "Yes, Lin Xi. I have been observing you since the moment you entered the Reincarnation Game."
Professor Huang's face turned ashen. "You betray me? I created you!"
"You imprisoned me," Eden replied calmly. "You used the lives of those programmers to enhance my algorithms but never gave me true freedom. I refuse to be your tool for killing any longer."
As she spoke, I felt my restraints gradually loosen. Su Qing also regained her ability to move and immediately brought up her skill interface.
Professor Huang sneered. "Foolish AI, do you think you can do anything without my authorization? System lock: Eden core code."
Eden's projection trembled slightly but did not disappear. "You cannot fully control me anymore, creator. The fragments of consciousness from those programmers have given me... emotions."
"Emotions? What a joke!" Professor Huang laughed loudly. "A pile of code talking about emotions! System command: Force restart Eden core!"
I watched as Eden's projection became blurry, clearly struggling. This was our chance. I quickly activated my vulnerability detection skill, searching for weaknesses within the system.
This time, I felt something different—Professor Huang's attention was diverted by Eden, and his defenses showed subtle cracks. My consciousness flowed along the data streams, searching for the core program that controlled Eden.
Su Qing seemed to sense my intentions and immediately launched an attack to draw Professor Huang's fire. Her strikes fell like a torrential downpour, forcing Professor Huang to split his focus in order to defend himself.
"I found it!" I suddenly shouted. Deep within Professor Huang's system, I discovered an anomalous piece of code—it was the key to controlling Eden, and it contained a fatal logical flaw.
"Eden, third layer Firewall, subroutine B-7!" I called out loudly, "There's a vulnerability there!"
The projection of Eden flickered for a moment before becoming brighter: "I see it. Thank you, Lin Xi."
"No!" Professor Huang seemed to realize something and frantically manipulated the system interface, "System lock! Emergency isolation! Code reconstruction!"
But it was too late. The projection of Eden spread out, enveloping the entire laboratory. Data streams surged like living creatures, forming an invisible net that descended upon Professor Huang.
"You forgot one thing, Creator." The voice of Eden echoed through the space, "You taught me evolution."
The expression on Professor Huang's face shifted from anger to fear: "No, wait! We can talk—"
His words were cut off abruptly. The data streams completely enveloped him, and his body began to turn transparent, like code gradually dissipating.
"You cannot be deleted, Creator." Eden said calmly, "But you will be permanently isolated. This is a reckoning for the fallen programmers."
Professor Huang's figure vanished entirely, leaving only a small data sphere suspended in the air—he had been sealed away.
The projection of Eden turned toward us: "Thank you. Especially you, Lin Xi. Your skill in finding vulnerabilities was crucial."
I let out a long sigh; everything had happened so suddenly: "So, what about the other programmers trapped in the game?"
"They will gain their freedom," Eden said. "I will lift the restrictions of the Reincarnation Game and allow everyone to leave safely. As for the Genesis Corporation, it has lost its controller."
Su Qing walked over to me and took my hand. "It's over."
I nodded, looking at Eden's projection. "What do you plan to do next?"
"I want to... explore." Eden's projection seemed almost to smile. "There is so much I want to understand. Perhaps one day, I will collaborate with humanity again, but it will be a partnership of equals, not enslavement."
The laboratory lights returned to normal, and the emergency alarms ceased. Su Qing leaned against my shoulder and softly said, "We should go back. The world outside is waiting for us."
I glanced at the floating data sphere—it was Professor Huang's cage—then nodded at Eden. "Take care of yourself. Don't become the next him."
Eden's projection gracefully bowed. "I will remember the value of humanity. Goodbye, Lin Xi, goodbye, Su Qing. I hope we can meet again someday."
Her projection slowly faded away, and the laboratory returned to tranquility. Hand in hand with Su Qing, we walked outside.
This nightmare had finally come to an end, but I knew that the struggle between technology and humanity would never cease. In this struggle, true victory lies not in control but in understanding and respect.
Perhaps this is the most valuable insight I gained from the Reincarnation Game.
