Today is my 26th birthday and also the third anniversary of my marriage with Ke Jingchen. At this moment, he is looking at me with deep affection and says, "Wan Wan, happy birthday, happy anniversary. I hope you will take care of me in the future."
Every year on this day, I receive an extravagant birthday gift along with a beautifully crafted ring. This year is no exception. Just as he is about to put the ring on my finger, an untimely phone call interrupts us.
When he sees the caller ID, he visibly freezes for a moment before quickly heading towards the courtyard. Moments later, he rushes back in a state of panic. "Wan Wan, there's been a situation at the company. I need to go back right away and will return as soon as I can."
Before I can even ask what happened, he grabs his coat and rushes out. At that moment, my phone rings as well. As soon as I answer, a hurried voice comes through the line: "Doctor Jiang, we just received a patient with gastric bleeding who urgently needs surgery. Can you come back to assist?"
"Okay, I'll be there right away."
An hour later, the surgery is successfully completed. As I pull open the operating room door, a familiar and concerned voice calls out, "Doctor, how is she...?"
When our eyes meet, his face is filled with panic, and the words he was about to say get caught in his throat. I look at him and say numbly, "The surgery was successful; the patient needs to pay more attention to her diet and rest."
Ke Jingchen and I are college alumni. During our time at school, we only had a few brief encounters and no further interactions. It wasn't until a year after graduation that the wheels of fate began to turn.
Ke Jingchen's mother fell ill and was hospitalized, and I happened to be her attending physician. Through this connection, we gradually became closer. Before long, he began to pursue me fervently. At first, I hesitated. It seemed as if he could see through my doubts and provided me with a sense of security that I desperately needed.
A year later, I married him.
For three years after our wedding, he remained as gentle as ever. Every time he looked into my eyes, they were filled with love. Each night, as our fingers intertwined and we grew closer, he would call my name with deep affection.
I always believed that he loved me dearly and would never be moved by another woman in this lifetime. But now, watching him anxiously waiting outside the operating room, coupled with the lie he told before leaving, I felt a sense of crisis for the first time.
After changing out of my surgical gown, I prepared to take a taxi home.
Ke Jingchen rushed after me. "Wan Wan, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to lie to you. She's my childhood friend; she just returned to the country today and suddenly had a stomach issue, so..."
Seeing that I was silent, he quickly added, "I've already contacted her family. Please don't be mad at me."
I smiled slightly. "Are you a doctor?"
His tone was helpless. "Wan Wan, I really have nothing going on with her. Please believe me."
I didn’t press further; I simply replied calmly, "Let’s go home."
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed his expression had softened considerably.
The whole way home, we tacitly chose not to speak.
In the following days, everything returned to normal. Ke Jingchen didn’t visit her again. The only change was that he became even more clingy towards me. Every night during our intimate moments, he was like a ferocious beast driven by desire, demanding more fervently.
Perhaps I was just overthinking it; I reassured myself with that thought. Just when I planned to let my guard down, an unexpected event occurred.
