As spring gave way to early summer, I watched the willow fluff dance in the air, silently lamenting my fate. Since childhood, I had suffered from allergic rhinitis. It wasn't severe, but every year at this time, I couldn't escape a bout of coughing and fever. 0

In previous years, Ke Jingchen would always appear as if preparing for battle. He would stock up on various allergy medications and sprays, and he had an entire box of masks ready for me. I would laugh at his exaggeration, but he would pull me into his arms and gently stroke my head, saying, "I don't want you to feel uncomfortable; it pains me." 0

But this time, he seemed to have completely forgotten about it. Ever since Jiang Wan returned, he had become increasingly busy, leaving early and coming home late every day. When I asked him about it, he simply said that there were some issues with the company's funding that he was urgently addressing and told me not to worry. 0

I didn't press further, accepting his explanation. The hospital where I worked was very close to Ke Jingchen's company—only about a kilometer away, roughly a ten-minute walk. I decided on a whim to visit him for lunch that day. I hadn't informed him in advance; he hadn't replied to my morning message, probably because he was busy. 0

As I arrived at the company building, I spotted him sitting across from Jiang Wan in the café on the first floor. I couldn't hear what they were discussing, but I noticed him smiling softly at something she said. Suddenly, Jiang Wan caught sight of me standing outside the window. 0

She looked at me with a provocative gaze, a sly smile curling at her lips—half mocking, half defiant. She waved at me, and Ke Jingchen turned his head in her direction, his expression filled with panic. 0

There we were, separated by a layer of glass, gazing at each other from a distance. I quietly watched him and suddenly burst into laughter. I wasn't sure what I found so amusing—perhaps it was frustration or maybe a sense of release. 0

He stood up, wanting to come out and find me. I turned around and left the place. 0

When I returned in the evening, Ke Jingchen brought me a gift. Inside a black velvet box lay a pair of pink earrings, sparkling brilliantly under the light. It was clear they were quite valuable. They were indeed beautiful, but I didn’t like them. 0

I rarely wore jewelry, not only due to my professional demeanor but also because I simply wasn’t interested in such things. The only time I would dress up was when accompanying him to significant events. 0

Seeing his hesitant expression, I knew this gift was Ke Jingchen’s way of apologizing for what happened at noon. I didn’t say much and smiled as I accepted his gift. A hint of joy flickered in his eyes, perhaps because he appreciated my understanding or maybe because I hadn’t made things difficult for Jiang Wan. 0

I placed the box in a drawer and lay down on the bed before him, yet sleep eluded me. When he returned from his shower, I quickly closed my eyes. He gently turned off the light and lay down beside me, the scent of his body wash filling the air. 0

He carefully pulled me into his embrace, his warmth enveloping me through the thin fabric of my clothes. Ke Jingchen’s warm breath brushed against my ear, "Wan Wan, I love you." 0

I didn’t move or respond; I merely pretended to be fast asleep. 0

A bitter smile crept into my heart. If he truly loved me, how could he repeatedly provoke Jiang Wan and turn a blind eye? 0
