On his birthday, he sent me a message: "Wan Wan, my mom said we should have a family dinner tonight. I'll pick you up after work."
I replied with an OK emoji.
A family dinner meant that Jiang Wan wouldn't be there. It was the perfect opportunity to announce the pregnancy.
Ever since Jiang Wan returned, I hadn't felt this relaxed in a long time.
After work, I spotted Ke Jingchen downstairs and hummed a tune as I jogged over.
Seeing me in good spirits, he asked, "What’s got you so happy?"
I feigned mystery, "It's a secret; you'll find out soon."
Unfortunately, my cheerful mood didn’t last long.
Before we even reached the private room, I could already hear Jiang Wan's voice from inside.
I turned to Ke Jingchen and questioned him, "Wasn't this supposed to be a family dinner? Why is she here?"
He explained sheepishly, "Xiao Wan came back specifically to celebrate my birthday. I really couldn't ruin her excitement."
"Your relationship is quite complicated, isn't it?"
"Wan Wan, you’re misunderstanding. It's really just friendship between us."
I looked him in the eye and asked, "Then why did she leave you back then?"
He froze, probably not expecting me to know.
I continued, "I overheard it at your class reunion that day."
"So you still love her, don’t you?"
"Wan Wan," he frowned deeply, "If you have any dissatisfaction with me, just say it directly. Don’t drag Xiao Wan into this."
Sure enough, as soon as I mentioned her, Ke Jingchen couldn't handle it.
Perhaps realizing his tone was harsh, he softened his voice and stroked my hair. "Wan Wan, you're usually so considerate; don’t make a fuss, okay?"
"Alright, it's your birthday today; I won't make things difficult for you."
As soon as I pushed open the door to the private room, I heard Jiang Wan's sarcastic tone.
"Oh dear, Doctor Jiang, you're so slow! A Chen only has this birthday once a year, and he doesn't seem to care at all!"
"I think you should drink three cups as a punishment, just to apologize to Auntie and A Chen," someone suggested.
"Xiao Wan, Wan Wan is a doctor and never drinks," Ke Jingchen interjected.
Jiang Wan complained nonchalantly, "Tch, how boring. It's much more fun when we eat together."
"A Chen, don't you think so?"
Before Ke Jingchen could respond, I smiled and retorted, "Otherwise, should I drink three bottles before performing surgery on Miss Jiang next time?"
Jiang Wan's face turned pale with anger.
Seeing the atmosphere grow tense, mother Ke quickly stepped in to ease the situation. "A Chen, Wan Wan, are you both hungry? Order whatever you like."
...
During a break in the meal, mother Ke suddenly took my hand and said, "Wan Wan, many people around me are already grandparents. Shouldn't you and A Chen hurry up?"
I felt a surge of joy; there couldn't be a better time to announce it. It would fulfill mother Ke's wish and also make Jiang Wan back off.
I excitedly began, "Actually, I..."
"Mom, we don't have any plans for that at the moment," Ke Jingchen interrupted me stiffly.
My hand, which was about to reach into my bag for the diagnosis slip, froze in mid-air.
Jiang Wan pretended to cover her mouth dramatically. "Why not? A Chen, didn't you always say you love children?"
"You used to say that having a son and daughter would be even better."
So it turned out that Ke Jingchen didn't not want children; he just didn't want them with me.
"The company has been facing some issues lately; let's talk about it later."
I looked at him for a moment and softly asked, "Jingchen, do you love me?"
He paused for a moment, instinctively glancing at Jiang Wan before quickly averting his gaze.
But I still caught it with keen perception.
He stared at me and said firmly, "I do."
My heart felt as if it had been tightly grasped by someone.
The last glimmer of hope I had for him vanished in that moment when he looked at Jiang Wan, when he hesitated just a second too long.
At that instant, I knew I could no longer endure it.
He suddenly realized something and reached out to touch my head, but I subtly evaded his hand.
I fought back my nausea and finished the meal.
As I closed the bedroom door, I took out the divorce agreement I had prepared long ago and gently placed it in front of him.
"Ke Jingchen, let's get a divorce."
