The next morning, Ke Jingchen called me more than a dozen times and sent dozens of voice messages, all implying that I should stop making a fuss and come home with him.
I only replied, "We are already divorced."
After a long pause, he responded, "Wan Wan, I do not agree to the divorce."
"This marriage is over for me."
There was no further response from him.
For the next month, I threw myself into work, and my days felt fulfilling. However, one thing I couldn't figure out was what to do about the child. As a doctor dedicated to saving lives, how could I bring myself to take away a vibrant little life?
Ke Jingchen almost came to the hospital every day to wait for me downstairs, trying to apologize and make promises. But I had no desire to engage with him anymore; I just hoped he would give up soon.
When it was my turn for the night shift again, the duty nurse hesitated for a long time before deciding to tell me: "Doctor Jiang, I just went downstairs to buy food and saw your ex-husband standing down there. He refuses to come in, and it's pouring outside."
I paused my work, took an umbrella from my bag, and hurried down the stairs.
Ke Jingchen stood motionless in the heavy rain, completely soaked.
I approached him with the umbrella and said, "Come inside with me."
Once we were in the inpatient department, I handed him a towel.
He dried his hair and face with the towel and said smugly, "Wan Wan, I knew you wouldn't ignore me."
Seeing his triumphant expression filled me with an inexplicable disgust.
"Wait until the rain eases up a bit before you go back," I said.
Ke Jingchen looked shocked, his tone softening immediately. "Wan Wan, give me some more time. I will handle things with Xiao Wan..."
I really didn’t want to hear that name again and coldly replied, "I'm no longer interested in this. Let's part on good terms."
Seeing that I was unyielding, his expression darkened.
"I've already apologized and promised to deal with her; what more do you want?"
He furrowed his brows, a hint of displeasure flashing across his face.
Perhaps he truly hadn’t expected that after lowering himself to appease me, I would still be so resolute. But did he really not see it coming? Each time he turned a blind eye to Jiang Wan’s provocations while blaming me for being unreasonable, I believed there was a trace of guilt lingering in his heart. Yet that fleeting guilt could never compare to the allure of his white moonlight. The moment he saw Jiang Wan, it turned to ashes.
I didn’t want to entangle myself with him any longer. I left him with a simple statement: “I don’t want anything; I just want to end our relationship as soon as possible,” and turned to leave.
For the next month, Ke Jingchen didn’t show up again. I thought he must have come to terms with things. Looking at my increasingly prominent belly, I planned to set up another appointment for him to sign the papers quickly.
One day, after finishing my rounds and returning to the nurse's office, Jiang Wan suddenly burst in.
As soon as she entered, she pointed at me and began to curse: “You shameless woman! What nonsense have you been telling A Chen? Why won’t he see me lately?”
“This is a hospital, Miss Jiang. Please conduct yourself properly and don’t disturb other patients and their families.”
“Are you saying I can’t talk about the wrongs you’ve done? I will speak up so everyone can see what kind of person you really are.”
“Miss Jiang, if you continue this unreasonable behavior, I will call the police. Malicious defamation can lead to imprisonment.”
Jiang Wan suddenly shoved aside the two doctors trying to hold her back and lunged at me, her mouth still spewing insults.
She pushed me down to the ground, and my belly hit the tiled floor hard, causing me to lose consciousness from the pain.
As I was wheeled out of the operating room, I saw Ke Jingchen rushing around the corner of the stairs. He looked disheveled, his hair messy and only part of his shirt tucked into his pants. A long-lost panic appeared on his face.
“Wan Wan.”
I lay on the operating table, calmly watching him.
He walked to the side of my bed, crouched down, and reached out to touch me. I raised my hand to stop him, forcing a grimace that was more painful than crying. "After everything, you still won't let me go?"
Ke Jingchen grasped my hand, his voice trembling. "Wan Wan... I was wrong. I beg you for another chance..."
You You pulled him away in disgust, shouting angrily, "What face do you have to ask her for forgiveness?"
"Did you ever notice she was pregnant? Why are you so blind? Why did you let Jiang Wan come looking for her? Her child is gone, do you understand?"
You You cried uncontrollably, "She gave you so many chances. She suffered so much—where were you all this time?"
Hearing this, the last trace of color drained from Ke Jingchen's face. He knelt on the ground, shock written all over him, repeating over and over, "I deserve this. It's my fault."
I calmly spoke up, "Please sign the divorce agreement as soon as possible."
He choked out, "Okay..."
I nodded and said, "Ke Jingchen, I hope we never meet again in this lifetime."
