The shopkeeper took out a very antique box from the counter and opened it, saying, "This is the Treasure of the Store, only sold to those fated."
Once the box was opened, inside lay a crystal-clear White Jade Hairpin, with the head adorned with intricate Silver filigree. Upon closer inspection, it depicted a phoenix, poised to take flight.
Its appearance was elegant and simple, yet the entire hairpin exuded an exquisite charm, perfectly crafted.
The moment Su Peijiu saw the hairpin, her breath caught for a moment. She reached out and gently held the hairpin in her hand, caressing it with a hint of nostalgia in her eyes. "Shopkeeper, are you really willing to part with such a Treasure of the Store?"
The shopkeeper smiled slightly and rubbed his beard. "The so-called Treasure of the Store is only truly valuable when worn by the right person. If it merely lies in this box, it is just a lifeless object."
"You are quite open-minded," Silver Dove interjected at that moment. It was clear that her sister was extremely fond of this hairpin. She took out some silver coins from her pocket. "Since sister likes it, why not buy it?"
Su Peijiu concealed her emotions and became somewhat timid. She turned to Silver Dove and asked, "Is it really okay? This hairpin is a Treasure of the Store; it must be expensive."
"What matters most is that sister likes it. When we leave, father will agree; as long as it's something sister likes, no matter how expensive, we will buy it." Silver Dove looked at her sister, the Legitimate Daughter of the Prime Minister's Residence, with sympathy. Ever since the death of Princess of the Red Nation Jun Liuji, her life had been quite miserable. Fortunately, their father had changed his mind and started to favor his Legitimate Daughter again.
Su Peijiu sneered inwardly; indeed, she was one of Su Chi's people. They had been out for less than half an hour and still had time to report back without anyone noticing.
"It's a fixed price of two thousand taels. Sister's skin is as fair as snow and her temperament is lively; this hairpin is a perfect match for you," the shopkeeper said while pulling out an abacus and clicking it before extending two fingers.
Su Peijiu pretended to hesitate. "Silver Dove, maybe we shouldn't buy it? It's so expensive."
Silver Dove took out two one-thousand-tael silver notes. "Sister need not worry; this amount is still affordable for the Prime Minister's Residence." Silver Dove took the hairpin from the box and inserted it into Su Peijiu's hair. "Sister looks beautiful wearing it."
"It’s getting late, sister, let’s head back to the residence. Otherwise, the master will worry," Silver Dove said with a smile.
"Alright, let’s go," Su Peijiu replied, exchanging a glance with the Shopkeeper before turning to leave. Just a few steps out the door, a crowd suddenly surged forward, quickly scattering Silver Dove and the others.
Once the crowd passed, Su Peijiu had vanished.
Silver Dove frowned and scolded the guards, "How could you protect her like this?! Hurry and find her! If you can’t locate her, you’ll regret it when we return!" With that, she flashed away and disappeared.
Silver Dove was indeed no ordinary maid.
Having been pulled into the shop upstairs by the Shopkeeper's men, Su Peijiu witnessed this scene and a hint of contemplation flickered in her eyes. Why did Su Chi arrange for this maid to be by her side? If it was merely for her safety, it seemed rather far-fetched.
Silver Dove was meticulous in her work and exceptionally skilled at reading situations; she was also quite charming. Now, with her martial arts skills added to the mix, if Su Chi had no ulterior motives towards her, Su Peijiu would never believe it.
Turning around, Su Peijiu looked at the Shopkeeper and thanked him, "Thank you for your help just now."
"You're too kind, Miss. Whatever the master commands must be fulfilled; we are willing to go all out for you without hesitation."
Su Peijiu reached up to remove a hairpin from her hairstyle and murmured, "Has he arrived in the capital yet?"
The Shopkeeper replied with a smile, "The master’s whereabouts are unpredictable; we dare not speculate."
"He must have come, but… why hasn’t he shown himself? Doesn’t he have any desire to know why I have changed like this?"
Seeing Su Peijiu looking somewhat downcast, Shopkeeper spoke cryptically, "Sister, there is no need for excessive suspicion. Once the time comes, he will appear. Please rest assured."
"Is that so..." Su Peijiu did not feel happy about this statement. She tucked her hairpin away into her bosom and then raised her eyes to look at the outside scenery. "I want someone I can trust. Please arrange it so that the maid by my side does not become suspicious."
Shopkeeper thought for a moment and nodded, "Leave it to us, Sister. Please move along."
An hour later, Silver Dove saw her sister in the busiest part of the market. She noticed Su Peijiu standing there with a handkerchief, looking somewhat at a loss. Silver Dove hurried over.
"Sister! Are you alright?"
Su Peijiu shook her head, "I'm fine, just..."
"Just what?"
Su Peijiu pointed to a girl selling herself to bury her father not far away and said, "She looks so pitiful. Can we help her?"
