Sitting dazed on the stone bench in the Yard, she realized it had already grown dark. Confused, she stood up to head back to the House when a male voice came from behind her: "What are you doing?"
Su Peijiu froze, her back turned. After a moment, she replied softly, "Nothing."
She didn't dare turn around; she couldn't bear to look at this man... Even though she had made up her mind to kill him and destroy his country, just like... just like what he had done to her back then...
But, but why hadn't her senior brother prepared her for this?
She clearly wanted to do this...
"I'm not feeling well; I'm going to rest." She forced the words out and walked back to her room, closing the door behind her.
Qi Mo stood outside her door, staring at the door and window for a while, his gaze deep and unfathomable. After a long time, he finally moved his feet and left.
For him... there was ultimately a divide of half a life and death, a cycle of reincarnation...
In the palace.
Unlike the tranquility of Desolate King's Manor, the palace was already in turmoil.
"Unfilial son! Unfilial son!!" The Emperor slammed the inkstone on the table to the ground, shards flying up and cutting his close eunuch's face, leaving a blood mark.
The eunuch disregarded his own injury and knelt on the ground: "Please calm your anger, Your Majesty! Take care of your health!"
"I'm not dead yet, but this unfilial son already looks down on me as Emperor. If he waits until he grows wings and becomes stronger, won't he rebel?!" The Emperor angrily turned to the table. He had sent people to urge them dozens of times, and until dawn, there had been no news from this unfilial son!
"Crown Prince, is the information you received true?" He asked Qi Rong, who was kneeling on the ground.
Qi Rong's lowered eyes flashed with a dark light: "The situation is absolutely true. There are over ten camps set up by Fourth Brother's army outside the city; I would never dare to lie."
Bang! The Emperor slammed his hand on the table, his beard bristling with anger: "Is this unfilial son trying to force me out of the palace?!"
"I wonder what Fourth Brother really wants to do; Father Emperor is still wise," Qi Rong added at the end.
The Emperor snorted coldly, "I have not lived these sixty years in peace. How many years has he lived? He dares to oppose me? Besides his brute strength, what else does he have?"
"Your Highness, issue an order to take the Imperial Forest Army to the Desolate King's Manor and capture this rebellious son along with his family. If there is any resistance..." A murderous glint flashed in his eyes, "Kill them on the spot!"
Qi Rong smirked slightly, but the smile faded quickly. He knelt on the ground, "Your servant obeys!"
The Emperor stood with his hands behind his back, gazing into the distance at the lights, his voice icy: "I want to see what kind of waves he can still stir up."
In the darkness, a group of armored Imperial Forest Army soldiers gathered with weapons in front of the closed gates of the Desolate King's Manor. Qi Rong slowly stepped out from among them, looking at the tightly shut door. He gestured to one of his men, "Go knock on the door."
After knocking three times, an old man peeked out from a crack in the door. Seeing the situation outside, he remained calm and said in a flat tone, "What brings His Highness here at this late hour? The Lord has already gone to bed."
Qi Rong sneered as he stepped forward, "Even if he is asleep, I’m afraid he must wake up."
The old man opened the door and gestured for him to enter. "Please come in and wait in the living room."
Qi Rong snorted and swept inside. The Imperial Forest Army behind him attempted to follow, but the old man blocked their way: "You are not worthy to enter Desolate King's Manor."
The leader of the Imperial Forest Army glanced awkwardly at Crown Prince Qi Rong. Qi Rong narrowed his eyes at the expressionless old man and then nodded, "You all wait outside." He walked forward while the old man didn’t even glance at the Imperial Forest Army outside and closed the heavy door.
As he made his way to the living room, before even entering, Qi Rong saw Qi Mo sitting in the upper seat. He coldly laughed and stepped inside.
"I did not expect to see His Highness the Crown Prince so many times in such a short period; This King is truly honored," Qi Mo said as he slowly scraped away the tea leaves in his cup and took a sip before placing it back on the table.
Qi Rong had a stern expression on his face: "If Fourth Brother had been more sensible, I wouldn’t have had to come teach you manners repeatedly."
Qi Mo stood up; today he was not wearing black robes but had changed into a blue long shirt, making him appear even more like a refined gentleman.
"Since the Crown Prince has come to visit, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to let him leave empty-handed, right? How about this, I will go with you," he said leisurely, seemingly unconcerned about the Imperial Forest Army outside.
Qi Rong looked into his eyes, trying to discern something from his expression, but all he saw was an ever-deepening abyss. "The order I received is to capture everyone in the Desolate King's Manor and imprison them in the dungeons."
"Then what are we waiting for? Go ahead and capture them," Qi Mo shrugged indifferently.
Qi Rong's expression darkened further. The reason he resented Qi Mo the most was that he always acted as if he didn't care about anything. Such a person made it impossible for him to grasp what truly mattered to him!
"Do you know who I dislike the most among all my brothers?" He stepped forward and grabbed Qi Mo's collar, envious of the unfathomable depths in those pitch-black eyes.
Qi Mo smirked slightly, "Your Highness, behaving like this might lead others to mistakenly believe you have deep feelings for me."
Qi Rong's face turned pale with anger as he released his grip. "Clearly more miserable than anyone else, yet you insist on acting as if nothing matters."
Qi Mo leisurely straightened his collar. "This is my way of life. Ever since my father sent me as a hostage over a decade ago, I have already decided to live this way."
"Let's see if you can remain so unperturbed and carefree once you're in the dungeons!" Qi Rong tossed his sleeves and walked out of the living room, with Qi Mo following behind casually.
When they reached the front courtyard, Su Peijiu stood there with an indifferent expression. The dim light cast a pale glow on her face, making it appear somewhat translucent. Her originally lively eyes now looked hollow and dim.
When she saw Qi Mo approaching, her gaze shifted away awkwardly.
Qi Rong stood before everyone with a grim expression. "Disband the troops."
Once again entering the dungeons, Su Peijiu felt it was quite remarkable that as the Chancellor's legitimate daughter of a nation, she could repeatedly find herself imprisoned. She wondered what actions Su Chi would take this time—would he sever their father-daughter relationship or adopt a policy of non-interference once more?
Sitting in a dark corner, she watched a fat rat scurrying around on the ground making squeaking sounds and sighed helplessly.
She still hadn't figured out what her senior brother meant by his words, and now she had been locked up in the dungeons again...
"Following This King has caused you suffering." From across the wall, the man spoke these words in a bland tone. To Su Peijiu, it sounded extremely ironic, so she retorted, "Desolate King is only capable of this much."
"Has This King seen you before?"
Su Peijiu's heart skipped a beat. Did he discover something? She quickly replied, "Desolate King, are you suffering from delusions? I haven't left the manor before the Flower Festival."
"Is that so..."
"Of course it is." Su Peijiu emphasized, "A girl cannot be like a man; going out casually would be considered improper."
"Then let This King admit to mistaking you for someone else..."
Su Peijiu breathed a sigh of relief, but after a moment, a voice came from the other side again: "This King once rode past a woman at the market; her gaze resembled yours quite a bit."
Su Peijiu suddenly recalled that was when she first saw Qi Mo after her rebirth, right after returning from the Azure Dragon Gang.
"It wasn't me." She decisively stated this and then fell silent, fortunately, no more sounds came from next door.
The torch burned dimmer and dimmer. Su Peijiu stared intently at the torch in front of her door, her body uncontrollably began to tremble until the last flicker of flame disappeared into the air. Finally, she couldn't help but bury her head in her knees...
She didn't know how long it had been when she heard the sound of straw being crushed in her cell. Cautiously, she looked up. Wasn't the cell door locked? How could someone enter her cell?
She discreetly raised her eyes to scan the cell but could only make out a faint silhouette. She swallowed hard; would calling out to that guy next door be of any use? Did this figure come to her cell to kill her or for some other purpose?
"Qi Mo—!" She shouted urgently as the silhouette approached her. But there was no response; the figure also stopped moving.
After a moment, a faint laugh came from within her cell: "Is this how you think of This King?"
Su Peijiu immediately stood up and shouted at the silhouette: "Are you trying to scare me to death?!"
The figure slowly walked over, stood beside her, and then sat down. "This King does not like being alone, so I came over."
Su Peijiu covered her forehead with her right hand. He was having another episode. When they were younger, he often sneaked into her palace and climbed onto her bed, claiming he didn't like being alone.
She sat down irritably. For a moment, she almost thought he was a ghost! The last time she was frightened by Yue Niang, and if she saw anything unclean again, she wasn't sure if she would have a mental breakdown.
The two of them sat in silence. After a while, Su Peijiu noticed something heavy on her shoulder. Rolling her eyes, she reached out to push his head away, but as soon as her hand moved, it was caught by his large palm.
The man whispered softly, "Just let me lean for a moment, just for a moment."
Su Peijiu felt dazed. At that time, he had done the same to her. The two of them leaned against the Old Huai Tree under the sunset; he rested his head on her shoulder and fell into a light sleep...
For some reason, her heart softened, and she stopped moving.
"I really want to be alone... I really do..." The rarely vulnerable male voice gently echoed in her ear, causing her eyes to involuntarily lower.
"But I don't have the right to think of her..." The male voice came intermittently.
Su Peijiu heard her own voice ask, "Why?"
"Because I... personally buried her..."
