If it doesn't leave, it will never leave. The Spring Festival passed quickly. During the time of war, not many families were in the mood to celebrate; they simply put up couplets and hung red lanterns. Firecrackers went off with a bang, and then everyone went their separate ways.
Su Peijiu here only had a reunion dinner before returning to her room to rest.
Her belly had grown larger, and now she was slightly out of breath while walking. After the heavy snow, the weather gradually warmed up, and before she knew it, spring had arrived.
The war continued even through the Spring Festival, unexpectedly lasting for two to three months. The Crimson Kingdom began to redeploy troops for support, while the Rebels seemed impossible to eliminate, leading to a stalemate.
In April, as spring blossomed, Su Peijiu was about to give birth.
Her Jin Sheng was to be born in this warm and flowery season. During this time, Ji Yu was almost never far from her side, being more attentive than her own mother.
"Put on another layer of clothing; my godson will freeze," Ji Yu said as he brought out a piece of clothing and draped it over Su Peijiu's shoulders. He took her fish food and tossed it into the pond.
"Isn't your senior brother already in his twenties? Why don't you find me a sister-in-law?" she teased.
Ji Yu smirked: "What would I do with a sister-in-law? To carry on the family line?"
"Doesn't your senior brother need one?"
"My son is in your belly, isn't he?" He casually tore apart the fish food in his hands and tossed it into the pond before lazily sitting down and taking a bite of a fruit. The bright red juice stained his thin lips, looking quite appealing.
"With your Demon-like appearance, I wonder how your future sister-in-law will manage you."
"Why is that?"
"Senior Brother, you are more beautiful than a woman. I fear that your future sister-in-law won't like standing next to you."
"Calling her your future sister-in-law, are you trying to sell me off?" He narrowed his phoenix eyes, concealing a hint of darkness.
Su Peijiu, unaware of Ji Yu's thoughts, simply smiled gently: "Being alone is always lonely; Senior Brother should find someone to keep him company soon."
"Can't you accompany me?" The question slipped out in the end.
Anxiously waiting for the response, he was taken aback to see her frowning with willow brows, clutching her abdomen: "...Senior Brother, I think I'm going into labor..."
After a moment of shock, he hurriedly rushed forward to pick her up and shouted, "Go call the midwife!"
Once the door was closed, all that could be heard were painful cries from within. He stood outside, feeling quite helpless.
Yan Bai stood beside him and spoke up: "Does the leader like my master?"
Ji Yu raised an eyebrow: "Why do you ask that?"
"If you like my master, then you must always protect her. The Desolate King and she are impossible." After finishing this sentence, Yan Bai walked straight ahead and sat down on the steps of the delivery room.
Ji Yu remained in place, his phoenix eyes shimmering with complex emotions as a spring breeze brushed against his cheek, scattering a few strands of hair...
After a night passed, Jin Sheng finally emerged. Su Peijiu was so exhausted that she barely had time to glance at the child before falling into a deep sleep. It wasn't until midday that she got up and saw Ji Yu holding a wrinkled baby sitting by her bed, looking gentle.
"Is this my child?" Su Peijiu leaned forward to take a look.
Ji Yu held the child in front of her, teasing, "This is your mother, the one who gave birth to you. Call her."
Su Peijiu laughed, "How could a newborn call anyone?" Then she added with some disdain, "I look pretty good, so why is this child so ugly?"
Ji Yu shot her a glance, "All newborns look like this. After some time, they will look better. Are you really complaining about your own son?"
"Let me hold him." She reached out her hands, and when the baby's soft body nestled into her embrace, her heart began to soften. Looking at the little face in her hands felt like all the precious things in the world were laid out before her.
Deciding to give birth to Jin Sheng was indeed the right choice. Throughout her life, she hated many things about Qi Mo, but she was grateful that he gave her Jin Sheng. She wanted to protect this child, to keep him all to herself and completely monopolize his love.
………………
Three years later.
The Crimson Kingdom was still at war with the Rebels of Desolate King. Su Peijiu had moved her family from Suzhou City to Chang'an; the outside world was no longer safe, filled with refugees and bandits.
Su Jinsheng was already three years old and much quieter than other children his age. Adults usually held a copy of the Four Books and Five Classics, following behind the teacher while babbling away. His speech wasn't very clear yet, but he could express himself well enough. Every time the teacher left, he would praise Su Peijiu for her child, making her very proud.
"Sheng'er, come here." She used a handkerchief to wipe Su Jinsheng's sweat; it was June and quite hot.
"Mother, can you take me out to play?" The child's soft voice made it hard to refuse.
Su Peijiu pinched his nose playfully, "What makes you want to go out and play?"
"I heard from the teacher that reading thousands of books is as good as traveling thousands of miles; I want to go out for a walk," Jin Sheng said seriously.
Su Peijiu looked delighted and said, "Alright, Mother will accompany you out."
"Mother is so nice." Su Jinsheng gave his mother a kiss on the cheek and followed the maid to change clothes.
Su Peijiu watched the shadow disappear into the room, her Water Eyes filled with laughter. She truly wished she could just stay with this child, ignoring everything else, but she knew she couldn't... otherwise, it would be hard to face the more than two thousand noble families of the Great Yan who had died unjustly.
"How is the battle situation?" she asked Yan Bai, who was hidden in the shadows. Three years had passed, and he had grown into a young man, his cooking skills becoming increasingly impressive.
"The Crimson Kingdom has already lost several cities, and the Rebels are advancing like a hot knife through butter."
Indeed, after three years, Qi Mo must have been unable to hold back any longer and started preparing for real action; the recent military movements were clearly different from before.
"It seems I need to go to the palace soon. Please make arrangements." This time, she would not leave it to Qi Mo.
"And..." she paused, "Has my mother been found?" If she wanted to compete with Qi Mo, she needed to understand what the Linglong Spine hidden in her body was all about, and Jun Liuji was the key.
Although she could also ask Jun Ye Su, she feared that if it became known, she would face countless troubles. However, if she had time, she could visit the library in the palace to take a closer look.
"There is still no news for now."
"Alright, I understand. Please arrange for more people for me and Sheng'er when we go out later; it's quite chaotic outside." She nodded and then softened her tone a bit. "What are we having for dinner?"
"A whole fish banquet?" Yan Bai smiled at her; he could see that the woman across from him instantly brightened up. "Then I'll be looking forward to dinner tonight."
"Mother." Jin Sheng came out wearing a red robe with dark blue lace. Upon seeing Yan Bai standing there, he quickly called out again, "Uncle Bai."
Yan Bai bent down to pat his head. "Have you gained weight again?"
Jin Sheng's fair face flushed slightly. "No, I haven't."
Yan Bai didn't expose him. "Uncle Bai has prepared a full fish feast for you tonight." He could see the excitement in the boy's eyes.
All of them were foodies, and Yan Bai couldn't help but smile helplessly.
Su Peijiu held Jin Sheng's hand and waved goodbye to Yan Bai before stepping out and getting into the sedan chair.
Inside the chair, she touched Jin Sheng's eyelids, worried. As he grew older, the color of his pupils became increasingly azure. She thought that without her saying anything, the servants would know he was Qi Mo's child. What should she do about this?
"Mother, I want to eat candied hawthorn." Once outside, Jin Sheng, feeling a bit childish, pointed to the vendor selling candied hawthorn outside the curtain.
Su Peijiu smiled and nodded to stop the sedan chair. "Shall we go out and stroll for a bit?" Jin Sheng nodded excitedly.
Once they got out of the chair, she waved to the bearers. "You can take the sedan chair away for now; we’ll walk for a while."
She had a maid buy some candied hawthorn for Jin Sheng, but he handed one to her. "Mother, have some."
"Okay." She took it and took a bite; it was sweet and sour, just like the flavors from years ago.
"What does Sheng'er want to buy?" Holding his hand, she walked slowly along Chang'an Street, feeling inexplicably comforted.
"Books."
"Such a bookworm, who does he take after? Your mother doesn't like reading either," Su Peijiu smiled.
Jin Sheng tilted his head, "Mother doesn't like it, but Father does."
He was referring to Ji Yu, who was currently out and had not returned. Judging by Jin Sheng's expression, he seemed to be missing Ji Yu.
"And Master also likes reading; it seems only Mother doesn't," he wrinkled his nose. Master referred to Mu Chu.
Su Peijiu chuckled awkwardly, "That's because your mother has read many books already, so there's no need to read more." Could she really get through anything other than historical anecdotes? Whenever she opened a regular book, she felt like sleeping.
However, being looked down upon by her own son made her somewhat frustrated: "From now on, your mother will study with you."
"Mother, you definitely won't stick with it."
"You little rascal, are you asking for a beating?" She pretended to be fierce and lunged at him. Jin Sheng quickly took off running, and she chased after him, laughter echoing behind them...
Behind them, a pair of dark eyes closely watched the lively figures, with a deep gaze entwined with delicate vines...
