Ye Feng rubbed his aching eyes, the data on the computer screen giving him a headache. The coffee on the table had long gone cold, but he couldn't spare a moment to take a sip. Outside, the sky had darkened, and the only light in the room came from the blue glow of the computer screen illuminating his weary face.
"Any discoveries?" Chen Xi entered with two cups of hot tea, placing one in front of Ye Feng.
Ye Feng shook his head, accepting the cup and letting the warmth spread through his fingers. "The clues are too scattered. Each time we change identities, the information we can gather is limited."
Chen Xi sat beside Ye Feng, glancing at the dense records on the screen. "At least we've collected details from over a dozen different tasks."
Since being forced to become a pawn of the Puppet Master, Ye Feng and Chen Xi had begun to seize every opportunity during their identity changes to gather as much information as possible. It was a treacherous game; they were dancing on a knife's edge, and if discovered, the consequences would be dire.
"Look at this pattern." Ye Feng pointed at several keywords on the screen, his voice tinged with excitement at the discovery. "Disrupting transportation hubs, attacking network systems, spreading false information... On the surface, they seem unrelated, but in reality, they all contribute to creating social chaos."
Chen Xi furrowed her brow, tracing her finger across several points on the screen and connecting them with a line. "If we look at these events on a timeline, it seems like the level of chaos is gradually escalating."
"Exactly." Ye Feng stood up and paced to the window, gazing out at the brightly lit city. "The Puppet Master's ultimate goal may not be these petty disturbances but rather using this chaos to cover up a larger conspiracy."
Moonlight streamed through the window, casting shadows over Ye Feng's furrowed brow. In that moment, he felt the weight on his shoulders grow heavier.
"We need more information than what just the two of us can gather." Ye Feng turned around, determination shining in his eyes.
Three days later, Ye Feng set up a secret online forum on an anonymous server, spreading it through several discreet channels to potential victims of Identity Trade. He named this forum Puppet Show—a name only those involved could truly understand.
It was a gamble. If the message fell into Puppet Master's hands, their situation would become even more perilous; but if they could connect with more victims, perhaps they could unite their efforts to uncover the mastermind behind it all.
In the first few days, the forum was unusually quiet; Ye Feng began to doubt whether his plan would work. Until late on the fourth night, a message appeared on the forum.
"I was forced to assume the identity of a financial analyst and caused a small panic at the stock exchange. Is anyone else like me?"
The poster used the alias Gui Niao, and fear and anxiety seeped through every word.
Ye Feng quickly replied, "You are not alone. We are all forced into this. Can you share your experiences in detail?"
In the following days, more and more people joined the Forum. They seemed to have found a glimmer of hope in the darkness, eagerly sharing their experiences and clues. Ye Feng and Chen Xi meticulously organized this information, trying to piece together a complete picture.
"Look at this." Chen Xi pointed to a new message on the screen, her voice trembling slightly with tension. "Someone said that while on a mission, they received two conflicting orders."
The poster identified themselves as Ye Mao, describing how while impersonating a government official, they first received instructions to delete certain documents, only to be told later to keep those documents and hand them over to another contact.
"What does this mean?" Ye Feng frowned in thought.
"There might be internal divisions within the Puppet Master organization," Chen Xi speculated. "Or perhaps an even more intriguing possibility—"
"There is more than one Puppet Master." Ye Feng interjected, a spark of realization in his eyes.
This discovery ignited even more fervent discussions on the Forum. Some suggested that the Puppet Master could be a group of individuals, each responsible for different regions or types of tasks; others speculated it might be a pair of twins or partners.
"These are all just guesses; we need substantial evidence." Ye Feng sat at his computer, his fingers flying over the keyboard.
Just two weeks after the Forum was established, Ye Feng received a new "mission"—he needed to impersonate a researcher and steal data from a laboratory. It was supposed to be an ordinary theft until he accidentally discovered a hidden room.
The main part of the laboratory was above ground, but through a concealed elevator, Ye Feng found an unmarked space underground. Driven by curiosity and instinct, he decided to take the risk and explore.
The underground laboratory was much smaller than the area above but equipped with more advanced technology. In the center stood a strange machine resembling a medical scanner but with many components that Ye Feng couldn't name.
"What is this?" Ye Feng murmured to himself as he cautiously approached the machine.
The display screen on the machine flickered with complex data and graphs, some terms catching Ye Feng's attention: "Neural Pathway Mapping," "Personality Data Transfer," "Bioelectric Field Synchronization"...
Ye Feng's heart raced as he realized he might have stumbled upon equipment directly related to the Identity Trade technology. This machine could very well be one of the key tools for identity replacement.
He quickly took out the prepared miniature camera and captured various angles of the machine along with the data displayed on the screen. Just as he was about to leave, he heard footsteps and voices coming from a distance.
Ye Feng swiftly hid behind a row of lockers, holding his breath.
"The test data shows that the latest improvements are significant, with memory residue issues reduced by 80%," a male voice said.
"However, stability issues still persist, especially the difficulties in backtracking after prolonged replacements," another voice responded, tinged with dissatisfaction.
Ye Feng listened as they busied themselves in front of the machine for a while before their footsteps gradually faded away. He waited a few minutes, confirming it was safe before quietly leaving the underground laboratory.
Back at his temporary residence, Ye Feng immediately shared his findings with Chen Xi.
"This is too dangerous!" Chen Xi exclaimed after looking at the photos. "But it could also be our turning point. If we can figure out how this machine works, we might find a way to crack the Identity Trade."
Ye Feng nodded and uploaded the photos to the encrypted section of the Forum, hoping someone could provide more clues. He knew he might have been drawn into a more complex web than he had imagined, but there was no turning back now.
"Whoever the Puppet Master is, whatever their intentions may be, we must stop them," Ye Feng said softly as he gazed out at the night sky.
Outside, the city lights twinkled like stars, and beneath this dazzling surface, an invisible struggle had quietly begun. Ye Feng did not know what tomorrow would bring, but he understood that strange machine might hold the key to unraveling it all.
He clenched his fists, determination flickering in his eyes. No matter how dangerous the path ahead might be, he would not back down. For freedom, for truth, and for those who were controlled just like him.
