In his Bamboo Cottage, Guan Tianming gazed at the painting on the wall opposite him.
His eyes traveled from the woman in the painting down to the shadow in the corner, finally resting on the solitary Azure Bird.
After a moment, Guan Tianming shifted his gaze and chuckled softly, "Ming Captain, you’re quick!"
"It should be called 'the net of heaven is vast and wide, yet nothing escapes it!' The Bu Dong Mountain Manor is ablaze now, and my people have already secured all the exits.
You took three lives before, and now you’ve claimed hundreds more. Even if you were to die a hundred times, it wouldn’t atone for your sins! If you still have a shred of conscience left, surrender and come back with me to the office," Mings stepped into the doorway, blocking the path.
On the soft couch beside Guan Tianming lay Qing Die, drenched in blood and barely clinging to life, her face ashen.
Mings's expression was icy as his hand hovered near his weapon. Just then, Guan Tianming spoke up suddenly, "Ming Captain, haven’t you always wanted to know why I do everything I do? The reason lies here."
He extended a pale finger towards the wall painting behind Mings.
"Do you see what’s different in the painting?" Guan Tianming said calmly.
Mings's gaze searched the painting again, and a strange mark caught his attention, stirring something within him. He unconsciously stepped closer. "Here?"
Guan Tianming nodded slightly.
The spot Mings pointed to was indeed the Azure Bird in the painting. At that moment, twilight deepened, and thin moonlight streamed into the room.
Mings truly saw a place that was different from what it appeared during the day. The Azure Bird was adorned with feathers of blue and green, layered and clear, resembling real feathers. However, the area on its chest, although painted with feathers, was a pale white, giving it an unreal quality.
Mings gazed in a daze and suddenly felt a jolt in his heart. He took out three pieces of blue-green bird feathers from his pocket. Carefully, he attached each feather to the chest of the Azure Bird.
In an instant, the three pieces of Qing Yu merged seamlessly with the other feathers. What followed was even more astonishing—within the painting, the Azure Bird suddenly stirred slightly and then began to flap its wings continuously, as if it had come to life.
Mings stared blankly as the entire mural began to change. With each flap of the Azure Bird's wings, the scenery in the painting slowly faded away, like a murky landscape painting, until only deep ink remained.
Only the graceful figure of the woman in white did not fade. At the moment the Azure Bird vanished, shadows in the corner of the painting rapidly expanded.
One, two, three, four figures emerged from the expanding shadows. The darkness grew larger, occupying the entire painting. Mings finally saw the faces of the four individuals—it was none other than the deceased Western Merchant, Yan Ying, Sun Miao, and Guan Ao.
In the shadows, the four were forcing the woman in white—Guan Tianming's mother, Zi Qing—toward the edge of a cliff. Each wore an evil grin and held weapons in their hands.
Zi Qing scanned each face with her cold gaze before finally fixing her resentful eyes on Guan Ao. Even at this moment, she could not believe that the man she had promised to love for a hundred years would push her into hell!
Mings noticed Zi Qing's left hand subtly moving behind her back. In the direction of her movement, he saw a young child hiding behind a large black rock.
The child's expression was grave; his eyes were filled with sorrow and anger as his body trembled violently—it was Guan Tianming.
Guan Tianming watched helplessly as his mother was cornered by four vicious men, one of whom was his own kin. How could he not feel pain? How could he not feel rage?
Zi Qing cast one last glance at Guan Tianming hiding behind the black rock before her body soared into the air like an ethereal fairy leaving this world, plunging straight into the abyss.
"With special pigments, dim moonlight, and the return of Qing Yu, a scene from many years ago is being replayed," Guan Tianming said quietly. "This is what you wanted to know."
"Why did they want to harm your mother?"
"Because my mother didn't want me to live my entire life under the immense shadow of Bu Dong Mountain Manor. She decided to take me away from the manor. Unfortunately, my father was blinded by greed; he only recognized that coveted manual that everyone dreams of. He insisted that it was my mother who had found the manual and wanted to take it out of the manor alone, so he entangled himself with his former wicked friends and caused my mother's death."
After finishing his words, Guan Tianming let out a faint sigh, a long-lost calmness appearing on his face. "It turns out that speaking the secrets in one's heart can be such a liberating thing. Unfortunately, too many people in this world bury their secrets deep within, and thus they live their entire lives under a heavy burden. I have said what I needed to say and done what I needed to do. I will not leave here; if you wish, you can use the weapon in your hand to take me away." Guan Tianming closed his eyes and fell silent.
Mings took a step forward, the blade creating a gust of wind as it rushed toward Guan Tianming. Just as the edge grazed Guan Tianming's neck, Mings suddenly pivoted, twisting mid-air like a hawk and landing swiftly beside Guan Tianming, striking with lightning speed.
Mings targeted several vital points on the human body, executing the movements seamlessly. Then he gazed quietly and said, "You don't need to pretend anymore; you can get up now. Qing Die? Or perhaps Zi Qing?"
