Chen Yin was on the phone with the police department, calling for backup. I bypassed her and approached the body. As I got closer, a strong smell of alcohol hit me, confirming my earlier suspicion that he had been drunk.
The deceased was a man in his thirties, his expression showing little pain, likely due to the numbing effects of alcohol. He lay flat on the floor with his limbs spread out in a star shape, his hands slightly open. The stubble on his chin was uneven and clearly had not been groomed for quite some time. I mimicked Yang Fan's analytical approach and thought that this man's recent life must have been quite unfortunate.
There was nothing on him to indicate his identity. I stood up and walked toward the body Yang Fan was examining when I suddenly noticed something lying between us.
It was glass!
Now I understood why Yang Fan looked so serious; my earlier theory of "man committing suicide" was impossible!
With glass present, the man could not have killed the woman. Was there someone else who did? But if the man didn’t kill the woman, why would he commit suicide?
This seemingly simple case was far more complicated than I had imagined.
I crossed the hallway and entered another Dance Classroom, finally reaching the spot where the young woman's body lay. Yang Fan's autopsy had already made some progress.
"Three stab wounds," Yang Fan said as he looked up at me. "The killer clearly stabbed randomly in the dark."
"And what about the killer?" I glanced over at the male corpse behind the glass.
"Not him," Yang Fan asserted. "There’s no way it could be him."
However, the preliminary autopsy report contradicted Yang Fan's statement; there was blood on the knife that killed the male corpse, matching the blood type of the female victim.
“Although we can't confirm it completely yet,…” Forensic Doctor Zhao said, holding up two test tubes of the same color for us to see. “It’s very likely that these two samples of blood belong to the same person.”
The criminal police team under Chen Yin took over the scene about ten minutes later. After conducting a simple blood type comparison, Doctor Zhao provided the conclusion. Yang Fan frowned upon hearing this and then tapped on what seemed to be an invisible glass.
“Could it be that the man returned to commit suicide after the murder?” Xiao He speculated.
Chen Yin retorted without hesitation, “Do you think someone who is determined to commit suicide would be as bored as you?”
“Well, it’s not entirely impossible,” I interjected to help Xiao He out. “Many people exhibit puzzling behavior before committing suicide.”
“That’s not possible,” Yang Fan denied. “He practically committed suicide in my arms; I was just a moment too late.” He glanced at Chen Yin beside him.
Sister Yin's cheeks flushed slightly in rare embarrassment as she angrily replied, “It’s not like I did it on purpose!”
At that moment, a police officer approached and opened a report, addressing Chen Yin. “We’ve identified the deceased; they were all employees of a real estate company.”
“What’s the name?” Chen Yin asked casually.
“Xinlan Real Estate.”
“Is it possible that this was a homicide? Don’t forget about the suddenly missing female student,” I turned to Yang Fan, who was sitting beside me in the back seat of the police car as the scenery outside rushed by.
“As long as we do a fingerprint comparison, we’ll know for sure,” Yang Fan said. “But I can assure you it was suicide; his actions were too familiar to me.”
I looked at Yang Fan, hoping he would correct my use of the word "familiar," but he remained silent, gently tapping his index finger against the car window, producing a deep rhythm.
As for the missing student I mentioned, we discovered her absence during the final headcount. She had only recently joined the Dance Academy, and neither the teachers nor her classmates knew much about her. She had been resting nearby before the incident but suddenly vanished afterward.
"This female student is a major suspect!" Sister Yin declared emphatically, stating the obvious.
However, there was too little information about the missing student to ascertain her identity, forcing us to abandon that lead and instead focus on the motive behind the crime.
When we returned to the Hua Mao Building, our purpose had changed. After negotiations, the chairman of Xin Lan, a kind-faced elderly man, agreed to our request for separate interviews. Chen Yin promptly assigned officers to conduct the investigation, while Yang Fan merely listened in from the sidelines without directly participating.
