When I and Yang Fan visited Luo Xinyu again, the man, who gave me a somewhat arrogant impression, was busy handling a pile of documents.
"Well," he looked up at us and said, "have you found out how Xinlan Company stole the documents?"
"He Shuang is dead," I stated bluntly.
Luo Xinyu paused for a second in his actions, then leaned back in his chair and stared at us, saying, "Is that so?"
"As far as we know, she was your girlfriend," Yang Fan said as he settled onto the sofa in the corner.
"Yes," Luo Xinyu replied calmly.
"Your girlfriend is dead, aren't you even a little sad?" I raised my voice. If I had merely disliked this man before, I now found myself somewhat disgusted by him.
"I was actually just trying to use her to steal Xin Lan's bidding proposal. Of course," Luo Xinyu said, "I failed."
"I want to ask you, do you know He Shuang's ex-boyfriend?" Yang Fan inquired.
"I have no need to know him," Luo Xinyu said indifferently. "All I wanted was Xin Lan's bidding proposal, yet they got ahead of me. If I hadn't been the last one to leave that night, I would have thought they used the same method as I did."
"Can you be sure that it was Xin Lan who stole your proposal?" Yang Fan continued to ask.
Luo Xinyu smiled and said, "That proposal is just a piece of waste paper to anyone other than Xin Lan."
The conversation with Luo Xinyu ended on a sour note. As one of Luo Xinyu's secretaries delivered a document, Yang Fan and I stood up to take our leave.
Stepping into the elevator, I pressed the button for the ground floor and turned to Yang Fan, asking, "Could it be that everything is just a one-man show orchestrated by Luo Xinyu?"
"That's certainly a possibility," Yang Fan replied, "but he lacks a motive."
"Maybe He Shuang is pregnant with Luo Xinyu's child and is forcing him to marry her?" I speculated.
Yang Fan gave me a look that suggested I had lost the argument. "You've been watching too many soap operas about wealthy families, haven't you?"
"And," Yang Fan leaned against the side of the elevator, "the Lo Family is known for being very cautious. If he really wanted to kill He Shuang, he wouldn't have asked me to investigate the case at this time. Generally, those with the surname Luo in Xi Cheng are quite cold-blooded; it's more likely they would just eliminate her and dispose of the body."
"Of course," Yang Fan smiled, "except for that guy, Luo Yuanxing."
Afterward, I bid farewell to Yang Fan and took Xiao Shi, who had been following the case with me, back home. When I arrived in Xi Cheng, Chen Yin's team had just returned from gathering evidence at the victim's residence. However, Yang Fan was nowhere to be seen.
As soon as Chen Yin entered the office, he hurried to his desk and sat down, hugging his knees as if trying to squeeze himself into the warmth of the heater. I handed him a prepared hot water bottle and asked, "Did you find anything?"
Chen Yin took the hot water bottle and stuffed it into his police coat, pointing at Xiao He without saying a word.
Xiao He was pulling out a set of evidence bags, among which were several knives that particularly caught my attention.
"What are these?" I asked, pointing at the three knives that clearly belonged to a set.
"A kitchen knife set," Xiao He said, "and it's imported. One of them was used by Li Jiaqi to kill."
At that moment, Doctor Zhao walked in with the autopsy report and said, "It's all done."
"Is the cut consistent?" Sister Yin asked, peeking out from behind the desk. This was the most crucial piece of evidence in the case, as it could determine whether Li Jiaqi was indeed the one who killed He Shuang.
"The cut is a perfect match. The blood samples have been sent for DNA comparison, but we'll have to wait two days for the results. However, I don't think it's necessary," Doctor Zhao replied. "It's undoubtedly Li Jiaqi who killed He Shuang."
The office of the criminal investigation team fell into silence. Everyone had hoped to avoid this issue, but it had now returned to their work: how Li Jiaqi had killed He Shuang.
I heard Xiao He mutter a curse under his breath.
