Zhongyang Hospital is one of the top comprehensive hospitals in the country, with branches established in various cities. Recently, it has partnered with Tohoku University Hospital to conduct research on brain surgeries, achieving significant progress.
The hospital was originally founded by Kenichi Asada and has since been passed down through the family. Naoki Okamoto's wife, Asada Yukiho, is the only daughter of the current director.
It cannot be denied that when Naoki Okamoto married Yukiho, he had the thought of mutual business benefits between their families in mind, especially since the pharmaceutical and medical equipment market is almost monopolized by the Asada family.
However, Naoki Okamoto was well aware that this junior of his, who was three years his junior, possessed a unique charm that firmly captured his heart.
At the beginning of their marriage, Naoki Okamoto often secretly rejoiced at having married such an outstanding and beautiful woman. But as time went on, he began to feel a sense of aversion towards Yukiho—not because she did anything wrong, but because she was simply too capable.
Whether it was household chores, financial management, or work, she excelled in all areas and even surpassed him. He started to realize why he had felt an underlying sense of unease during their early relationship; it was an invisible distance that no matter how hard Naoki Okamoto tried to bridge, he could never reach.
Gradually, he invested less in their relationship. After Yamaguchi Haruna appeared, he no longer felt any desire to possess Yukiho. Haruna worked in the same department as Yukiho and was a senior from Yukiho's university days, just a year younger than Naoki Okamoto.
During university, Naoki Okamoto had interacted with Haruna a few times and had a good impression of her delicate nature. Unexpectedly, this connection could only bloom quietly in the shadows.
Everything seemed to be running on a visible track for Naoki Okamoto until he never anticipated that events would evolve into their current state.
In early December, Haruna was discovered dead at the construction site of Kamihon Park. The cause of death was a stab wound to the heart from a sharp weapon—she died instantly.
Upon hearing this news, Naoki Okamoto felt as if all his strength had been drained from his body; he felt utterly torn apart. However, misfortune did not end there. By mid-December, as he began to recover somewhat, his wife Yukiho was also attacked in her office building. It was basically confirmed to be the same assailant; she too was stabbed with a sharp weapon but fortunately avoided any fatal injuries and survived.

Chiyoda Station was particularly crowded with people disembarking. From here, one could take the No. 3 express line to reach the bustling city center. Along the station's line were several small shops selling tea soup. Perhaps due to this winter being especially cold, these hot beverages were quite popular; steam rose from simple wooden stalls while the light fragrance of tea drew many passersby to stop and linger.
Haruna, carrying the local specialties she brought back from her hometown, ordered a cup of black tea from the owner. She was dressed in a white double-breasted coat, her nose slightly reddened from the cold.
Finding a long bench, Haruna sat down and peeled back the plastic lid to take a sip of her tea. Her nearly frozen body slowly began to relax.
Every year, Magazine Hui Ri Dong Planning grants its full-time employees fifteen days of vacation. In the past, Haruna would take advantage of the summer to travel with friends to nearby towns.
This summer, however, the company was involved in a project with West Street Building Coffee Cinema. Due to fierce competition, all departments hoped that employees could postpone their vacations until after summer. The Advertising Department, where Haruna worked, was no exception, scheduling all holidays for after September.
At the end of October, Haruna requested an extended leave from the company. She decided to return to her hometown of Lian Ben and visit the local shrine while she was there. As her tea neared its end, Haruna felt a weight in her heart at the thought of her vacation coming to an end and returning to work the next day.
She rummaged through her beige leather bag for her phone and scrolled through her contacts. When the cursor landed on Naoki Okamoto's name, she hesitated for a moment but ultimately pressed the call button.
