Xin Zi woke up a bit late. Although she was naturally laid-back, her steps into the office carried a hint of urgency. 0

To her surprise, the face that greeted her made her pause for a moment. She instinctively glanced at the nameplate to confirm she hadn’t walked into the wrong office. 0

Seeing her reaction, the other person found it amusing. “Still not awake? Or are you just unhappy to see me again?” 0

The girl regained her usual calm demeanor. “No, I’m just curious where all the doctors who should be in the office at this hour have gone.” 0

“You’re not doing your job as an Intern Doctor very well. If the doctors aren’t in the office, they’re obviously in the wards seeing patients. You’re late, so you wouldn’t know we had a very serious patient come in.” 0

Xin Zi picked up the white coat hanging on the back of the door and slowly put it on, buttoning it up while tilting her head with a smile. “A serious patient, huh? Let me guess, this must be one of your patients. A patient brought in by the Criminal Police Captain early on a Monday morning is certainly something else; no wonder all the doctors rushed over.” 0

The other person stood up slowly. 0

Yan Qin’s smile faded from his face. “If I could help it, I wouldn’t want to bring a patient here… I’ve been in this line of work for nine years, and I’ve never seen such a horrific case…” 0

The seriousness in his tone made Xin Zi turn to look at him intently. “But we’re in Ophthalmology… does that mean…” 0

A photo came into view: a girl in a light-colored dress lying in a filthy Deep Alley. 0

Another close-up shot showed the girl’s eyes covered in blood, making it hard to tell whether she was unconscious or awake. The gruesome sight raised doubts about her chances of survival. 0

The Female Intern shifted her gaze from the photo to the bed before her. The girl on the bed had her eyes wrapped tightly in layers of thick white gauze, her frail body silently engulfed by the blankets. 0

"I'm sorry, but the damage to your eyes is too severe. We have to proceed with enucleation," the Director of Ophthalmology whispered to Yan Qin, pulling him aside. 0

"Oh," the Criminal Police Captain replied expressionlessly and then asked, "Has she woken up?" 0

"She should be awake." 0

"I understand. Thank you, Doctor." Yan Qin gestured for him to leave. 0

The Director of Ophthalmology cast a puzzled glance at Xin Zi, who stood motionless. It was clear he was surprised that this intern could remain so composed in front of the Criminal Police Captain. 0

Seeing that she did not leave and the police had no intention of escorting her out, he decided not to say anything further and exited the room. 0

"Hey," Yan Qin approached the bedside and leaned down. "Are you awake?" 0

The girl did not respond, but both men by her side noticed her throat move slightly. 0

"My eyes..." Her voice was dry. 0

"I'm a police officer. You're in a hospital. It's safe here," Yan Qin avoided the question, his comforting tone tinged with a hint of regret. 0

"Your eyes were too badly injured; the doctor had to remove your eyeballs," Xin Zi's voice came softly, as if merely stating a simple fact. 0

Yan Qin shot her an irritated glance. 0

"Who... are you? Are you also a police officer?" The girl did not react with the hysteria Yan Qin had expected upon hearing the bad news—she seemed unfazed. 0

“I am the Intern Doctor here,” the usually composed Bystander said, a hint of surprise in their voice. “Aren’t you going to cry?” 0

“… I want to cry, but… I don’t know if I can still shed tears…” The girl’s voice was hoarse. 0

“Tears are secreted by the tear glands and have nothing to do with having eyeballs…” The Intern started to explain further but was promptly stopped by Yan Qin. 0

“Miss, we sympathize with your unfortunate situation. Fortunately, you are no longer in life-threatening danger. Now, the most important thing is to capture the Criminal who harmed you. Can you please tell us what happened at that time?” 0

“What happened at that time…” The Victim repeated blankly, her face obscured by her hands, making it hard to read her expression. “What happened at that time…” 0

“Take your time, don’t rush…” 0

After a long silence, the girl’s voice came out tiredly: “I’m sorry, my head hurts…” 0

Xin Zi stopped Yan Qin, who was about to press for more information. “Let it go; she needs rest. Give her some time.” 0
